Just heard Ian on 5live trying to defend Tyson he did a good job of what is ultimately a hard case to make on that kind of radio show.
Well done mate

Cheers Josh.
Re: well done Ian McNeilly
Why were you defending Tyson? What has happened?
Well done by the way Ian, getting yourself on 5 live, in my opinion one of the homes of respectable/responsible sports journalism.

Re: well done Ian McNeilly
I didn't want to mention it in the e-mail Ian, but did you notice that he brought a porn star to the Hatton fight. Now that's class. 8)
Re: well done Ian McNeilly
An event with him in Glasgow has been called of cos of protests from womans rights and his rape conviction.Goz wrote:Why were you defending Tyson? What has happened?

Re: well done Ian McNeilly
Ok cool, thanks Josh. Could have been a good event with Scott Harrison acting as the host for the evening.
Re: well done Ian McNeilly
Cheers Goz. I've been on a few times now - some for boxing, some for teaching.Goz wrote:Why were you defending Tyson? What has happened?

I read in the local paper a little snippet that Scott Harrison is back on remand...so he couldn't have done the Tyson gig! That would have been car crash entertainment!

Re: well done Ian McNeilly
bit of a shocker with developments of the Harrison case, his uncle Jack McGill was found hanging from a tree.
Jack McGill was charged in Spain alongside Harrison, the case was on going so i don't know what this death will have on the charges.
Jack McGill did box pro for a while, and its a sad end to a life

So you must be one of the first to get a call when the old 'boxing in schools' debate gets raised every few months!Ian 'Mr' McNeilly wrote:Cheers Goz. I've been on a few times now - some for boxing, some for teaching.Goz wrote:Why were you defending Tyson? What has happened?

They don't really link up like that, they must think I'm two different people! I'm all in favour of boxing in schools, particularly teachers v lippy students!Goz wrote:So you must be one of the first to get a call when the old 'boxing in schools' debate gets raised every few months!Ian 'Mr' McNeilly wrote:Cheers Goz. My english teacher/head of 6th form taught us boxing and later took me to the local boxing club with him where I bloodied his nose

Which 5 Live prog was it? Or what time was it on? I think there's a 'Listen Again' feature and I'd like to have a listen to your good self.Ian 'Mr' McNeilly wrote:Cheers Goz. I've been on a few times now - some for boxing, some for teaching.Goz wrote:Why were you defending Tyson? What has happened?

He's done the time is the obvious one.
We happily embrace far more dangerous men at number 10 let alone as an after dinner speaker to 150 fans in Glasgow!

Re: well done Ian McNeilly
and also its quite hard to glorify him too much these days because he cuts a pretty sad figure!
Re: well done Ian McNeilly
1. No one is buying a ticket because he's a rapist. Almost all right-minded boxing fans/people in general abhor rape and rapists.Old bones Ian wrote:Ian , what was your arguement in favour of Tyson being allowed to attend this show?
2. He's served his time.
3. Boxing fans surely have a right to pay to see their heroes, even if they are feck ups.
4. There are plenty of other mentalists out there making a living.
There are more - and plenty of counter-arguments I'm aware of too. I also made the point that it's completely understandable if women or whoever want to speak out against him. It's hard to have sympathy for a convicted rapist who has blown $500 million. I don't. But that doesn't mean he shouldn't be able to haul his tragic arse around the country to entertain people deluded enough to shell out three figures to see him.
Re: well done Ian McNeilly
one weard thing though you soudned like a northerner I'd always assumed you were a london type!

But as you say if people want to shell out stupid money to listen to a guy who once was a good boxer its up to them.
Tyson is just a commodity now, to be used and abused. I can't say i'd be surprised if he wasn't alive in 5 years time.
Re: well done Ian McNeilly
Sounds to me that the problem posters have on here is more the amount being charged than Tyson actually doing the rounds. Is that a fair comment?
I'd pay to see him based on the assumption that it was an evening, not some sick circus booth. Heck, I've paid for Hatton and Bruno in July.

Re: well done Ian McNeilly
Spot on, Ian. I think I rather harshly (but it's true) referred to him cutting a tragic figure these days and seem to remember calling him 'an ambulatory freak show'. One hopes his future isn't as grim as you point out but if either he (or Gazza, poor lad) ended up dead in a hotel room, one wouldn't be surprised...really hope they both live long productive lives, of course.Old bones Ian wrote:yeah i'm all for the womens protests, as is their right.Ian 'Mr' McNeilly wrote:1. By the way, Emerson, I know someone who went to one of these Tyson events a couple of years ago and he stumped up £100, had an obscured view and couldn't hear Tyson mumble the answer to a few pre-vetted questions taken from a hat.
Re: well done Ian McNeilly
Not even a picture, Ian? That's shocking. In that case they can feck off. I can go to Cheetah's in Vegas for free and see him and they at least have strippers!!!!
