Sonny Liston was remarkable for still being in the top ten as far as 1971 !!!!!

Bob Fitzsimmons, believe it or not, was a top contender virtually til the time he retired in his 50's, and not only as a heavy, but as a light heavy and middleweight! Jem Mace was also a top contender for many, many years after losing/vacating his title.

Especially remarkable, given he had passed away by 1970.funso banjo baby wrote:Sonny Liston was remarkable for still being in the top ten as far as 1971 !!!!!

Re: Former HW champs who retained a rating
I suppose in some way Larry Holmes and George Foreman did after they 'retired'.

Who was being a wiseguy?
Re: Former HW champs who retained a rating
How? The first published ratings were Tex Rickard's in Ring Magazine back in 1924. Fitz died in 1917, and Mace in 1910. Fitz was stopped by O'Brien in 1905, Jack Johnson in 1907 and Bill Lang in 1909, and laid off for three years before two non-decision fights in 1914. He was finished as a contender by 1907 at the latest.HomicideHenry wrote:Bob Fitzsimmons, believe it or not, was a top contender virtually til the time he retired in his 50's, and not only as a heavy, but as a light heavy and middleweight! ezzard seemed to carry on forever but was he a top ten contender over this period
no one seems to have remained world class to the extent that Sonny did....

Patterson was still top 10 rated at the time of the Ali rematch, 10 years after losing the title, wasn't he?

What are you on about? Holmes wasn't exactly desperate to fight Witherspoon again after Spoon beat him up.funso banjo baby wrote:tubbs, witherspoon etc ???

Tubbs and Spoon were legit champions, WBO et al is 'baubles'.

they were bauble champs
holmes was the undisputed champ
holmes was the undisputed champ
Re: Former HW champs who retained a rating
Holmes was not the undisputed champ...he had WBC and then IBF straps.
He was recognised as the linear champ and the Ring champ.
Never the undisputed champ.

what is this 'undisputed' crap
heck even JD Chapman feels he deserves a crack at the champ
Holmes was the linear Ring champ.....u know the rules even if he fought scott frank or lupe guerra for the next 20 years ..hed still be champ
even if he was stripped of his alphabet titles hed STILL BE CHAMP !
thats how it works
the man who beat the man
Re: Former HW champs who retained a rating
So who is the man that beat the man now ?
And who was the man when Ali retired post Spinks II ?

Re: Former HW champs who retained a rating

Re: Former HW champs who retained a rating
Its not the Undisputed champion then...
its the Ring recognised champion.
And I know you know I know this...but do you really know that I perhaps dont know that
we both know something that is not known to be as absolute as you or I knowing what each
of us know about what either of/or both know.

Re: Former HW champs who retained a rating
its an interesting conjecture
the 'undisputed' thing dsnt really mean anything
Jd Chapman presumably 'disputes' this ...he is afterall the pan-african centro latino WOrld Champion
now dont make me come down there !

Re: Former HW champs who retained a rating
:) Oh Ill be a good lil imperial subject.
It is sad however that 'undisputed' had to come about in the first
place and that worse...now it really is a lost notion for HW's.
