Most of the major fights in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane were promoted by Stadiums Limited. During the 1930s and 1940s they were owned by John Wren. Henry Laurence ("Harry") Miller was the manager of Sydney Stadium from 1936 until the "Old Tin Shed" was torn down for the Eastern Suburbs Railway in 1970. Hugh McIntosh was involved as well, but I am not sure where or when.

Was Harry Miller a promoter or did he just manage the building (Sydney Stadium)?

From memory he did both. The Don King style promoter was not known in Australia at that time.

harry miller, sydney=dick lean, john wren, melbourne=bert potts, brisbane=h.mchugh liechardt, sydney=they were the main promoters until the mid sixties when the clubs started promoting, mcintosh was around in the early part of the century,i think he put the burns v johnson heavy fight on.today the promoters have made a laughing stock of our national ratings and titles, fighters can be rated up the list without fighting the boys below him, nothing titles are put on every night if you weigh in the extra dollar;the game is going to the dogs,we have some great young fighters, but they are getting handled wrong.young pitman was an example, fed mugs then thrown to the wolves, medley is another one,why cant they prove themselves the best here, then bring the ten rounders out from usa and uk,young danny geale doesn,t want to let those bodgy titles go to his head or should i say his handlers heads, because he is a top prospect.mundine is ihe only one who can dream because he picks his victims and promotes. all the best, when in doubt keep the left hand out.

Hugh D (aka Huge Deal) McIntosh built and promoted the old Sydney Stadium in 1908 until March 1913 when he sold the Stadium to a syndicate of businessmen led by Reg "Snowy" Baker.

Baker, in 1914 took a punt on an apprentice blacksmith from Maitland called Darcy and made a fortune. Baker became an unpopular figure after Darcy's passing and quit boxing and went to Hollywood.

During the depression of the 1930s, the Stadium was leased out to private promotors, including Hugh D McIntosh again.

Unpopular? He was going to Maitland for Darcy's funeral when he was informed that if he turned up at the cemetery the people of Maitland were going to dig another grave and bury him in it.

I should have used the stronger "detested" or even "hated" instead of "unpopular" and added a bit more background.

The reason why "Huge Deal" and his cohorts became as popular as turds in a swimming pool, were due to their actions in hounding Les Darcy, after he made his ill-advised stow away voyage to the USA.

Snowy Baker, John Wren and McIntosh, all of whom hoped to promote Darcy's furture fights in America, labelled him a draft dodger and pulled strings preventing him from fighting. Baker sent out a series of circulars (at McIntosh's behest) condemning Les as a coward and a shirker. Darcy was then targeted by the pro-conscription lobby and became a political scapegoat, was vilified by the press and received white feathers for cowardice.

After Les died in the USA, his body was bought back to Sydney where it was received with the grief and reverence set aside for national heros. Over 30,000 filed past his open coffin in a Sydney funeral home before it was taken by train to Maitland. Over 100,000 folk attended Darcy's funeral in Maitland.

Snowy Baker may have felt a bit of shame for his actions against Les and sent a wreath to Darcy's mother. The wreath got returned and when Baker tried to attend the funeral at East Maitland cemetry, enraged mourners turned him away.

He did sing the song, played AFL footy for 3 clubs, did a TV show in the states, bit-parts in movies and celebrity boxing (beaten by Meninga). But I didn't know he was a promoter.
