Questions about starting a boxing club
Questions about starting a boxing club
Would it be okay to start an amateur boxing program out of my house/garage? I was thinking about the liability and how if someone gets hurt on your home's property they could sue you and take your house. I know USA Boxing has insurance with it, but is it enough? Would I be better off renting some place not on my home's property?
Re: Questions about starting a boxing club
There are many garage/backyard gyms. If (and you should) you register your club with USA Boxing, you are covered by a 2 million dollar liability policy. All registered members, athlete and non-athlete, have secondary sports insurance. Where your gym is located doesn't make any difference.
Re: Questions about starting a boxing club
You may want to try it out in your house/garage and see how it goes. Like Mel said, you want to become a registered club prior to having anyone train there. You will also want to make sure that anyone who trains is a registered athlete with USA Boxing so that you are protected. Your first step is to become (assuming that you aren't already) a certified coach registered with USA Boxing.
Re: Questions about starting a boxing club
Thanks for the replies. I guess I'm still worried about the person who sues me for 2 1/2 million and then the insurance won't cover the whole thing, then they come and take my house. It would be nice if there was a lawyer who could make a recommendation to me.
Does anyone know if there has ever been a lawsuit brought by an amateur athlete for more than the 2 million dollar policy, in the history of USA Boxing clubs?

Re: Questions about starting a boxing club
Okay, so do lawsuits happen in amateur boxing that you know of? I have never actually heard of any myself, but for some reason this crossed my mind as I considered opening a boxing club up in my pole barn.

Please email me at [email protected] and let me know the city and state you live in. I will be more than happy to give you several USA Boxing contacts in your area that you can talk to personally.
Re: Questions about starting a boxing club
The coach needs to be registered and certified. The coach also needs to make sure every boxer is registered with USA Boxing. The coach also needs to ensure that his/her boxers are following the rules and that common sense safety practices are being used in his/her gym. You can always be sued, but if you're not negligent the likelihood of a multi-million dollar verdict/settlement is very low. I am an attorney and a boxing coach. I am not worried about being sued.
