Dorian Anthony
Dorian Anthony
The good news is - he is okay, but undergoing a lot of tests. Dorian collapsed while playing golf with his dad yesterday. According to xrays, he has some swelling and bleeding on the brain. He is alert and responsive. Doctors have told him he'll never box again. Thank God we didn't lose him. I've known Dorian since he was a JO. Great kid - respectful, mannerly and a real pleasure to have around. From what his coach's wife told me this morning, Dorian didn't "look right" to his coach in his first GG bout and, later, Dorian complained about the lights. Other than that, no symptoms.
Re: Dorian Anthony
Sad news. I know that he had a tough bout in a close 3-2 decision loss at the NGG to the eventual runner-up, Torres. I know that the 21 year old Dorian was on his way in the amateur ranks with his gold medal performances at the 2007 Nat'l PAL and 2008 US Championships. I hope all turns out well for this young man.boxmel wrote:The good news is - he is okay, but undergoing a lot of tests. Dorian collapsed while playing golf with his dad yesterday. Boxers do need to rest after tough bouts where they take heavy punishment. I had discussions with several doctors at the NGG about boxers lying to the doctors. We do need to educate boxers and coaches that second-impact syndrome is serious. For instance, do not compete after you were knocked out in sparring!!! I know coaches who have their boxers compete within days after being stopped. MISTAKE!!! Just because a boxer does not receive a suspension does not mean they should be boxing right away. Some coaches need to be a little more careful.
I want to make it clear, I'm not saying Dorian's coach did anything wrong. I am just using this as a platform to remind other coaches how serious of an issue this is and to play it safe.

Mel - this is the reason I try to make it so my sons have very good defensive skills. They don't take a lot of punishment and I want to keep it that way. I also don't dehydrate my boxers, including my sons. Your brain needs that water cushion around it. Your cells also need the water to work perfectly.
Even doing everything correctly does not guarantee that there won't be an injury. However, driving down the highway at 55-70 mph is a whole lot more dangerous. Especially in Southern California, right? In Southern California, you have boxing grannies driving around.
My prayers are with Dorian and his family. I pray he recovers.

55 or 70? That's the slow lane! You'll get run over doing 80 on our freeways! Yeah - they still let me have a license, can you believe!Even doing everything correctly does not guarantee that there won't be an injury. That's really scary, thank God he's ok. I was going to ask if it was SIS, I know they have that big warning at the begining of our passbooks about it, but I know guys like Dorian are probably so tough and so determined to win they make themselves feel better ,even when it might be better to tell a doctor. It's ashame he won't be able to box anymore.boxmel wrote:No. But thanks for putting the reminder out, Dennis. Second Impact Syndrome is for real - and usually terminal. It is scary that he collapsed a week after his bout. Had he sparred or competed after his NGG bout?

Kolya - how are you getting to Oxnard? Flying in to LA, renting a car and driving up?I guess I'll be doing the driving when we come to PAL then, because the rest of my people here are too used to polite Montana driving.
Dennis - I'm going to see Joe Zanders at a clinic tomorrow - I'm sure there will be an update on Dorian. However, no news is good news.
Depends on airfare, I think. But I think flying into LAX and then up to Oxnard is most likely; I've been told though by people that if we timed it right we could make the drive in a day to LA, but that depends on people going and fuel costs.boxmel wrote:Kolya - how are you getting to Oxnard? Kolya - email me and let me know what you're going to do re the PAL. It will probably be cheaper to drive than to fly and rent a car.
Dorian is having headaches now. And, in spite of the tests he's had so far, the docs haven't found anything. They will continue to test until something can be determined. He's being treated by some of the best neurologists available. And the nurses love him!

Re: Dorian Anthony
Talked to Dorian's coach's wife this morning. The docs have pretty much ruled out SIS - thank goodness! And think he might have had a stroke - some of his symptoms, i.e., being blinded by lights, and headaches after looking at lights, could be stroke-related. He had a MRI this morning and now just waiting for results. He's out of the ICU and in a room.
Re: Dorian Anthony
Thanks Mel. I hope he continues to improve.
Re: Dorian Anthony
how long do you have to wait before you box again. Maybe thats another problem because people don't know
Re: Dorian Anthony
If a boxer is stopped by RSC-H it is a minimum 30 day suspension. If you suspect that a boxer has received a concussion, you could follow the same guidelines. There is no contact at all for the 30 days and then you need a doctor to sign a release allowing the boxer to return to contact once the suspension period is over.hello2007 wrote:how long do you have to wait before you box again. Re: Dorian Anthony
Well - doctor's have ruled out SIS, heart problems and anything else really detrimental regarding Dorian. Seems as if he was playing basketball with Paul Green after he lost at the GG and they collided. So the docs think he had a concussion and have stated he can box again. That's the latest.
Re: Dorian Anthony
That's great. I hate to see any guy lose their chance to box, especially one so young and promising. I can't imagine what I'd do, and I'm just a low level club boxer now, not the National champion. :)boxmel wrote:Well - doctor's have ruled out SIS, heart problems and anything else really detrimental regarding Dorian. Re: Dorian Anthony
that is crazy. 2 days before the metro detroit gg i was doing some light sparring getting ready for the tournament and all was good untill i got out of the ring and couldnt remember being in the ring at all. i dont even remember who unlaced my gloves. anyway i went to the doctor and it was determened that i had an accumilated concusion based on my symptoms and the doctor said that he thinks i had it and got back into the ring with it and thats how i got hurt. so i missed my shot this year at the nationals but im safe and glad it wasnt worse. its been about 8- weeks or so and i havent sparred yet but am still training and will start again this week. allways better safe then sorry and i pray all turns out well with dorian.
Re: Dorian Anthony
Thank goodness you were smart enough to take time off from sparring or boxing! Frankly, I'd go back to the doc before you start again and get a clean bill of health from him.
Re: Dorian Anthony
That was great advice boxmel. It would be very smart to see your doctor again before you start. There is no need to take chances.
Re: Dorian Anthony
Mr. Detroit - you definitely want to get rechecked before starting contact again. Once a doctor takes you off contact, you need one to clear you before you return to contact.
