Thaxton/Melero

Post by jomothepure »

The EBU have put these two forward to contest the 135 european title after Romanov vacated in order to chase a world title tilt.

Will Jon go for it? Does he have a chance?

If his fight with Meager is still on I guess we'll see what sort of state he's in after the Romanov fight

Here we go, Thaxton hogs the British and the Euro title fights again.

Thaxton will get outboxed in this one.

Melero is a fast boxer with decent power.

Thaxton is a determined style but there's only so far that his brand of self motivation and Ingle-style can take him.

Anyway, I thought Zoff had the EBU title/or was contesting the vacant belt, & that Melero was the mandatory!

Should the BBBofC not put a couple of fighters forward in a British elim to keep things busy?

He doesn't even have a punchers chance anymore, he can't reach In with his shots properly.

He certainly won't reach Melero! He's a bit like a balding, 32-year-old version of Khan with impressive speed and movement, leaving himself open as he rushes in for the kill.

Melero leads with the right hand too much. He often throws jabs only after the right. Thaxton will be trapped on the outside in this one. A good left hooker, with a good chin, and the ability to apply pressure is needed to beat Melero. Otherwise, a big single punch hitter to cancel Melero out.

So is this fight EBU or EU-EBU?

Limond is fighting Earl, Murray was meant to have fought Fewkes, Khan is fighting Gomez and has already turned down a fight with Thaxton and Meager is the British mandatory. Who else is there to be put into an eliminator to keep things busy? Lawton and Stewart maybe?

That sounds good. I was thinking Zoff had been handed down the EBU title. Melero has already beaten Zoff, so let Zoff have his halfway fake belt.

Will be ok if Hennessy gets the fight over here, as Melero is a good fighter to watch.

I don't think the EU belt is that bad.

I don't mind Thaxton but he doesn't deserve another shot at this belt even if he beat Meager in a few weeks. I would think that Khan could do with this as his fight in August or September against Melero of Zoff - it would be ideal for Khan if he happens. Although I can't see Franky Boy putting Khan in with Melero in a million years, so the vacant belt should be fought between Melero and whoever else.

Khan's sitting on his WBO ranking. Doubt he has a European title fight.

Well, it is. A complete load of rubbish. The dreadful thing is, there are a load of even worse belts than this garbage.

In fact, all belts apart from the Lonsdale are shite (ahem, clears throat, 'God save our gracious Queen...') :D 8)

I'm only half joking.

EBU.
Meager vs Murray would be an excellent supporting bout. Hennessy likes putting on strong shows - if he can get Thaxton-Melero main event, Meager-Murray would be a superb undercard. It would be a can't-miss show.

I know Lee is mandatory already but IMO it's a nice idea. If the champ is off galavanting for something else, the British title could do with keeping "busy."

Is Thaxton fighting Melero next or is he fighting Meager first? If he is fighting Melero next I can see him vacating or being stripped, and Meager vs Murray is the most likely match up for the vacant title if that happens.

purse bids for the EBU arn't until the middle of this month anyway. I'm sure they'd let Thaxton fight Meager first, if that fight's still on for July

You can bet Jono wants that Lonsdale belt - isn't it 1 more ttle defence and then he has it?

I think he'll want another EBU crack first however. Thaxton has that whole 'I can do anything I set my mind to' thing where he psyches himself up for big assignments.

Thaxton's a warrior and I respect what he's done but he's really clogging up the British lightweight scene.

It is one more mandatory defence and then he wins the belt outright, Meager would be that mandatory title defence he needs to win it.

He is scheduled to defend his belt in July, so he is hardly clogging up the division.

Is he going to defend in July, when a European title fight is close?

He's getting cut seemingly all the time, and if every fight has to count, surely the EBU title fight is most important.

Given that he's going for an EBU title when he never won a round in the last EBU challenge, and that he's set to face Meager, who he's already beaten, this does constitute "clogging up".

Maybe he can then defend vs Scott Lawton, before going for another EBU title shot, and then a rematch with Dave Stewart, before losing another European title fight. What then? Drag Scrap Iron Ryan out of retirement.

If he has to chose between the two fights on offer, he is likely to take the European shot. But, he might not have to choose, and if he beats Meager but gets cut, he might be able to get the European title shot put back a few months (which seems to be the way it works).

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think Thaxton might have won the last round of that fight before it was stopped on cuts.

I am not sure what you are getting at. It is not as if there have been loads of good British fighters desperate to fight him, but he has instead been fighting sub-standard opposition. Khan and Earl both turned down their mandatory positions and other fighters have not emerged as obvious candidates for a British title shot (any more than the opposition he has fought) in that time.
