The Contreras boy is such a tragedy. And his parents are suing everyone involved in USA Boxing. Glad to hear you have a brain and use it! :D

that was the same thing that happened to joey dawejko, at the u.s. championships, he did not remember anything from the fight, he was telling me that he couldnt even remember being declared the winner, and he got checked out and all, and is training hard now. he was out 5-6 weeks with no sparring, but he just got cleared to fight again, so his plans are to fight in the under 19 tournament, and his plans to go pro is unmentioned!!

Juan Contreras is improving and is now responding to people. It is sad that he was injured, but that does not necessarily mean it was anyone's fault. It might just be a freak accident or the rumors could be true that he had been injured outside of boxing and didn't disclose it. I hate to see anyone get injured like that, but accidents do happen in evey facet of life, including the sport of boxing. Unfortunately, the family has decided to sue many people/organizations involved in the sport of Boxing. A sport that their son loved.

My husband refereed a bout several years ago where he had already given one boxer a standing 8 and was watching him very closely. Several seconds later, the boxer leaned against the ropes and slid down them to the canvas. Luck was with us that day in that we had two highly trained boxing doctors in attendance - one at ringside and the other is one of our officials. The boxer was transported to the hospital, where he remained in a coma for a week or so. He eventually got well enough to undergo rehabilitation. The sad part is that he had been hit in the head several weeks prior with a jet ski and had even been taken to the same hospital - where they remembered his jet ski incident! The saddest part is that his parents never told his coach about the prior concussion. He had not even been hit with a hard punch - SIS can happen without the boxer being whacked. Obviously, he will never box again and either will the Contreras boy. Too bad parents don't take responsibility in keeping their children safe and well.

Mel - sounds very familiar to this incident. The rumor is that he was in a sledding accident and hit his head. I saw a video of his bout and he got hit a couple of times, but nothing that you or I would think would cause him to go into a coma. I really think this is a case of SIS or some other pre-existing condition.

Mel - what ever happened with Zelentes' autopsy? She got hit with one right hand and collapsed. I thought that she too probably had SIS or a pre-existing medical condition.

Dorian is doing well. He was suffering from a Cavernous Malformation ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cavernous_angioma ), a pre-existing vascular defect in his brain. He underwent successful surgery and has been back in the gym for about 2 months now.

Was he cleared by the doctors to box again? I hope he is able to box without any additional risks.

Ooops - sorry. Went right by this one. I have no idea. I think you can probably do a search on her and find out what info is available. I'll ask, however.

They never published any info that I have been able to find about her authopsy results. That leads me to believe that there might have been some other cause, b/c we all know that if it was shown that it was boxing related the news would have made a big deal about it.
