Murray wins easy for me too but I doubt he'll get the stoppage . He's not really a puncher and the one positive trait McDonagh has is a good beard . Murray 100-90 , possibly scored closer(cause the Irish refs seem to like to do that for some reason) .

Almost two-and-a-half years since his infamous bout with Michael Gomez, Irish Lightweight champion Peter McDonagh finally defends his belt at the National Stadium next month when he takes on rising star Andrew Murray in the latest Hunky Dory Fight Night, the details of which will be announced at a press conference in Dublin tomorrow (Thursday).

Former three time amateur champion Murray (12-0) has been causing ripples at Light Welterweight, where he holds the national belt, but steps down to his natural weight as he attempts to win his second title.

‘I can’t wait for it, I’m up for any fight at all and I don’t care who it is really,” says the 25 year old. “I still have to get down to the weight but I’m comfortable, it’s not too far off the weight that I usually work at. I have sparred McDonagh before, he’s a tough lad, he’s strong and durable but I feel I’m a better boxer with more skills.’

Not many casual Irish sports fans would have heard of McDonagh prior to 28 January 2006 when his opponent Gomez dropped his hands and turned his back in an Irish title fight. The bizarre incident became national news, with veiled talk of betting conspiracies and withheld purses (all of which amounted to nothing) adding to the intrigue.

In the interim, while Gomez has managed to secure a big payday against British hope Amir Khan, London-based Galwegian McDonagh (11-12-0) has failed to defend his title and the smart money will be on hot prospect Murray, who has won four times already this year, when the pair go at it in five weeks time. The fight will be on the undercard to Bernard Dunne’s tussle with an as-yet unnamed opponent, with promoter Brian Peters having succeeded in putting together yet another attractive card on the night.

‘You have a couple of big name boxers coming through like Dunne, Macklin, Duddy, McCloskey and Andy Lee so there are plenty of opportunities for big cards and for the likes of me as chief support to some of them,’ says Murray. ‘That was what Paul McCloskey was doing and now he’s headlining so hopefully that can be my aim if I keep winning. You have to keep winning, just concentrate on the next one and put on a good performance.’

Birmingham-born Matthew Macklin is, along with John Duddy and Murray’s old amateur roommate Lee, one of a triumvirate of Irish middleweights tipped to push for a world title in the next 18 months. Murray has a long way to go to reach that level, but the father of one admits that he is happy with the progress he has made so far.

‘I had a rematch with James Gorman called off back in March, which was a bit of a downer, so I had to get in with a fella just above journeyman level. Then I was fighting again two weeks later, and again a week after that. It was great to get a few fights and stay injury free, it gave me a bit of confidence and it was something that I needed.’

Having won the Light Welter strap against Belfast bruiser Gorman in disappointing fashion – Murray was forced to stop due to cuts but, under an odd Irish rule, got the decision on points – the former amateur Four Nations champion is still awaiting a decent test. Brazilian Wellington De Jesus was expected to provide it last time out but he was counted out in the first round, complaining bitterly of a low blow.

‘I think it might have taken the shine off a good performance because it was the first round and I was starting to warm up a bit,’ states Murray. ‘He took a few shots and I know myself that he wasn’t going to last long and it robbed me of a good knock out or stoppage victory. He just bottled it. I thought it was low myself at first but then looking back it wasn’t as low as I thought, I think he felt that was his chance to get out.’

Murray’s own ‘chance to get out’ of the shadows will arrive next month. A convincing win alongside messrs Dunne and Macklin would mean that we will be hearing a lot more about the modest Cavan man in the coming months.

McDonagh will be defending the Irish title he won in controversial fashion against Michael Gomez in 2006 while the undefeated Murray will be attempting to add the Lightweight belt to the Light Weterweight belt he already holds.

Both men have sparred countless rounds with each other in the past and both camps hold vastly differing views on the outcome of those sessions.

McDonagh's manager Mark Roe said, I wasn't involved with Peter back then but I had heard at the time and Peter confirmed to me afterwards that he broke Murray's jaw in two places during one of their spars. 'I don't think it was anything malicious on Peter's behalf, it was just one of those injuries that happens in sparring but it's something to consider for those people that say Peter's not a puncher.'

Murray's manager Mickey Helliet is bullish about his man's chances. 'Actions speak louder than words and we've wanted this fight for the last 18 months while we've only had silence from McDonagh during that time.

'In fact I think that's a big psychological advantage to Andrew and means he's won the first round.

'I truly believe that this is a foregone conclusion for Andrew as long as Peter actually turns up.

'I won't believe it's happening until the ring has cleared and the two guys are left standing there with the first bell about to go - even then I'll have to pinch myself.

'Peter has pulled out of fights before, he was supposed to fight Oisin Fagan in Dublin and he pulled out of that and because of Andrew he nearly pulled out of the Gomez fight.

'Andrew's trainer Paul Rees told me after one of their sparring sessions for that fight Andrew was so dominant that McDonagh was considering not going ahead with the Gomez fight. I know they had some pretty heated sparring sessions but I know Andrew always got the better of them.'

who with only 14 fights is hard to tell the quality of .

Yeah, he promounces it "Uh-sheen". Apparently. it's an old Celtic Warrior's name, which was I thought was most ironic, considering the line of work he's in and the way opponents always talk about his toughness after they fight him.

Yes, we're gonna miss him around here. He did alot for boxing in this area. And yes, he's crazy- all-round good guy. He was a bit crazy in his college years (weren't we all ? :) ), but he's calmed down and is doing his best to make a difference.

I would imaging the name has some connection with the Welsh name "Osian". Quite a common name with Welsh speakers.
