Kevin Mitchell v Walter Estrada

Post by scrap iron »

Does anyone remember that Colombian Walter Estrada who fought Scott Harrison a few years ago? Well he's fighting Kevin Mitchell on Saturday night. I seem to remember Estrada catching Harrison in the early rounds at will in with his fast southpaw flurries, until the bigger Harrison caught up with him in the Colombian crumbled in the fifth. Could be fairly competitive then, but a fight Mitchell should win impressively and by stoppage. Oh, and Estrada is a featherweight, but it's not like SN choose fighters from a weight class below for all their unbeaten prospects!!!!
Mitchell by KO in the second half of the 12.

Estrada was KO'd a couple of fights ago by big punching novice Rafael Hernández, one right hand decked Estrada and he was out for 10 minutes.
I'd say that Mitchell should do the job inside of 5 rounds

Good fight, I remember Estrada throwing some hard looking shots against Harrison - Mitchell will have to be careful in the first few rounds. His chin is good though, and Estrada gave up pretty easily against Harrison ( I think )

Mitchell seems to be back very quickly after that last war though..

Estrada is a soft touch, and typical SN fodder.

Mitchell is overated, so it might turn into a decent little fight.

I don't mind this matchup to be honest - he's just come off a tough fight against Carl and is up against a decent fighter who can punch a little. I expect Mitchell to finish him off in the mid-rounds though, then hopefully lining up Arthur vs. Mitchell in late 2008 (it would eclipse Mitchell vs. Johannasson for me).

Could be interesting... I thought Estrada had Harrison beat- then just quit.... not sure how much notice he has had for this. He certainly has the power/speed to worry Mitchell early.

Cheers fellas, been racking my brains all day trying to remember the Harrison-Estrada fight. Couldn't for the life of me remember what happened in it!!

Estrada doesn't seem the most durable of fighters, so I fancy Mitchell to dispatch him fairly early.

This fight depends on how much ambition Estrada has left, that fight with Harrison was a while ago, and Estrada has lost every time he's stepped up in class, and the 2nd round KO loss a couple of fights ago was a bad one. out for 10 minutes.
Thats why i see Mitchell getting this over quick

If Mitchell's as good as we hope he is, he should get a stoppage in about 5 rounds.

Good shot to the solar plexus/heart area (not the chest) to get the job done.

Poor performance from Mitchell though - his heart will eventually get him starched in real world class company.

A matchup with Arthur would be good - two Euro level fighters competing over the pretentious kudos of holding the WBO belt in this division. But enough of the cynicism lets hope this fight can happen presuming that Arthur gets through the big name that Buncey is privy to.

He's only now getting the learning fights. Many of his first 20-odd were a waste of time. It might be too late to iron out some of the flaws, but the lad's got a lot of heart and every fight from now on should be entertaining.

Kevin is a good fighter to watch but he wont be around long if he carries on getting hit so much.I thought Estrada was winning the fight before being stopped.

I like Kevin a lot but that's the last two fights I've had him losing before he's turned it around and to be honest, they weren't against world-class operators, so it's a worry. I would personally keep him away from Arthur at the moment because I think he loses. I would put him in with Kirokosyan if he still fights or maybe the Euro champ Gulyakevich. He needs to stop getting into wars and like everyone is saying, use his God damn brain because he's got good defensive when he uses it.

It was a good fight. Mitchell-Arthur would be a really good matchup - but as someone said above, between 2 Euro level fighters.....

I think Arthur might beat Mitchell but then remembering him getting decked against Foster Jnr maybe not....

Good learning fight for Mitchell if he actually does that and learns from it. Head movement isn't something that just happens though, I don't think anyway. Although I guess it can be worse if you don't have any respect for an opponents power, maybe Estrada wasn't really hurting Mitchell so he basically didn't 'bother' moving his head as much as he should.

If Gomez doesn't get blasted out in three rounds against Khan then I would like to see Mitchell vs. Gomez. It would be another learning fight and would present a different challenge. He would eventually win I think and then would be ready for Arthur early next year if Arthur can still make 130lbs. Mitchell should've been in with Johannson, Gomez, Estrada ten fights ago. It's just more evidence that packing a record with bums and getting them to 25-0 before being tested is going to backfire, because people look at Mitchell's record and think he deserves a title shot but he's had two or three real learning fights in all those fights and was lucky Johannson and Estrada both fell apart because I had him losing both fights until he stopped them. There's nothing wrong with his heart and talent, it's top-class experience he lacks, and lacks big at the moment.

Watching it on Setanta I was amazed that it took John Rawlings by surprise that Estrada crumbled so 'suddenly', it was clear he was beginning to wilt.

What about Mitchell versus Burns or Foster Jnr.

Mitchell vs. Foster would be ideal and so would Gomez if he doesn't get blown out in three by Khan.

I fail to see what Gomez brings to the table, the fight would have been a good one pre-johanneson, but now it's nothing more than a payday for both fighters.

Mitchell needs a bigger test - A Foster fight seems like a logical and easy match to make, and then follow that with a tilt at Arthur.

Whatever the course, I think Mitchell has found his level.

Perhaps Gomez will teach Mitchelle to shore up his defensive because Gomez could hurt Mitchell.

I doubt it, Mitchell has enough padding on his record to have worked on things, and be more disciplined in his approach - I guess we could say this has led to his face first approach to fighting, but still, I would hope as he step up higher, he can sit back a bit more, but it seems an inherent flaw in his make up as a fighter.
