UNLUCKY HERBIE

Post by neil r »

I don’t know about anyone else but I felt genuinely sorry for Herbie Hide last night. To lose a fight in the manner he did particularly after dominating such a tricky counterpunching, southpaw opponent for the duration the fight lasted must be soul destroying. Personally I like Herbie. He might no longer be a world beater but he’s entertaining, on his day a class act and off his day he can be a real turkey. The first Chingangu fight anyone??

Ok perhaps he was a bit melodramatic (understandably) in the post fight interview with the “unluckiest boxer in the world” angle but his comments about being in the shadows of others ie Bruno and Lewis had a real element of truth in them.

Whilst boxing fans who know their stuff might have once upon a time recognised Hide as being genuine class he has always lacked the recognition amongst the “great” British public that the other two seemed to receive almost as a matter of course.

Losing out on the chance of fighting Williams in the biggest domestic fight for many years through no real fault of his own must be soul destroying. If the beeb got their hands on this fight and Herbie won in convincing fashion it might have gone someway to giving him at least a belated amount of recognition he seems to crave.

Personally id place Herbie as a better boxer than Bruno and for a while he had the tools to dominate the division in the manner Lewis did and I would certainly place him above the majority of domestic heavyweights around just now. I have doubts now as to whether the Williams fight will happen. I don’t think Herbie will call it a day, but I can see Williams looking for a way out now. I hope Im wrong mind you! And I hope Herbie finally gets another shot at the title.

As I believe it the Danny Williams V Herbie Hide fight was due to take place in London (Venue to be confirmed), Friday 23rd April there was talk of it been for the EBU title, but that seemed a little strange for me.

The beeb was deffo in line to broadcast this, as promoter Jess Harding also was looking forward to putting on a real show for the british fight fans, it was a fight we were looking at, outside the Hide V Harrison fight, that to be honest will probably never happen.

Sadness goes out to Hide, he has been against it over the last few years, well ever since losing his WBO Crown really. He needed to kick start his career and upto last night he was doing exactly that, and with the massive domestic head to head clash againt Williams, it would have been that kick start what Hide needed. Alas not to be.

There is even suggestions from him that he is considering calling it a day, do we have any other real heavywieght talent that has acheived world class level ? perhaps its a sad day for British Heavyweight Boxing.

I personally don't like Hide, I think he's a creep. But he was unlucky in that one. I don't think anybody will debate that. I don't see it as that big a deal. Nobody is going to think he was beaten by a superior opponent, Danny will still want to fight him, and it may make the fight more interesting if both men are coming off an embarrassing loss.

I dislike Hide. I think he's bad for boxing (remember the Audley incident??), and generally quite a nasty character.

I sincerely hope we don't see him again personally.

It was interesting to hear him say he wanted to fight WIlliams then Sprott then retire. (I'm sure I heard this correctly)

Does that mean he had no intention of fighting Audley?

I understand your comments and why you feel like that. I was actually working on that promotion of Audley Harrison V Matthew Ellis, it was a clammy night at the York Hall.

The place was packed. Bruno never actually helped the issues by climbing up onto the ring skirt and drawing attention of Harrison, who in turn if you remember must have annoyed Hide in the sense that Harrison took the mic and asked the audience "who is next, Bruno or Hide" and the crowd were yelling Bruno, Bruno, Bruno.

Hide sat at ringside at this stage as he invited over by the beeb, it must have annoyed him and left him feeling quite, well rejected i suppose. Not to say for one minute, and I must stress this, that what Hide did was right, far from it.

My sister was with sat at ringside about 4 seats to Bruno's right, and when it kicked off it was scary I dont mind admitting it. You was confined with a very small area, the clattering of thrown chairs, women screaming as people tried to get away from the area. My point is, Audley Harrison was also fined by the BBB of C for his contribution, was it entirely Hide's fault ?

He is the bad boy of boxing, as is Tyson would it stop you from watching him in domestic show down ?

in america, wouldnt this have been ruled a

NC4

or TW4 (technical win) for herbie?

how the fornicate can you kick a guys ass for 3 rds, then he cuts you with his head and he wins on a frickin TKO?

pure bullshit. i was only tuning in to watch eddie mustafa muhammad but i ended up feeling some serious irritation. no way should that be a LTKO4.

ah well, hopefully williams v hide, the cursed fight, in june maybe?

yes in some other places that would of been ruled a no contest as 4 rounds were not completed. I think it's a rule that the BBBC should bring in as the clash of heads was completely accidental.

The four-round rule is only in effect in 12-round fights. As far as I know one-third of a bout has to be fought to go to the scorecards (which in an 8-rounder would be let's say 3 rounds) , so in the U.S. Hide would have won a tecnical decision.

John Inverdale was talking as if it was the end of Hide's career. It's only a meaningless cut eye loss. Hide can come again.

Bennie I so agree, this is not 'a loss' in the real scense of the word, just an accidental cut, should have been No Conest or technical draw.

This result should not really effect Hides career in any major way as long as the cut heals well and Hide wants to continue, which I imagine he will once he has calmed down,

Up untill that point I thought Hide was looking good.

???

I didn't see Herbie "kick his ass" for 3 rounds? Barely either one of them landed a shot. Sure I don't mind admitting Herbie would/should have gone on to win... be he was hardly impressive in those 3 rounds in my view..

I felt that within a couple of more rounds Herbie Hide would have connected flush on chin, wobbled his opponent & KO,d him.
Hide was being cagey trying to avoid the counters, but still doing more work.
It should have been declared as a NC or gone to points on the cards at that point.
Herbie Hide was doing great & I'm sure he'll recoup and continue when the eye is fully healed.

MGibbonsMC is spot on right,Audley played a big part in instigating that riot, otherwise why would BBBC fine him?
