Stu,
I don't want to name names, but regarding Brook and his undeserving chance.
If he's not worthy of his chance, why do the Title Pretenders shy from facing him ?
Does it not seem strange to you that boxer A is not prepared to fight for the vacant title against Brook, but boxer A will gladly fight for the title if boxer B was in the opposite corner ?

Mmmmmmm .........

Thats fine - but all of them?

They could go as far as Boxer S on the alphabet and it wouldn't be a rediculous title fight... I am sure there are lots that would have the mind set of "crikey, I aint going to get a title fight - this is a golden chance, so what if its short notice".

You can even go as low as David Walker in the rankings and it wouldn't be a bad fight for Brook and an eliminator.

Fighters who have already drank and lost in the last chance saloon, who might think their opportunity is over.

The thing is that fighters were not just saying no, they were signing to fight him and then pulling out, wasting weeks/months of Brook's time and then he had to wait for a new eliminator opponent to be announced only for it to happen again. If it was a case of fighters just saying no to the offer, then I think the board should have just kept going down the rankings until they found anyone willing to fight Brook, but that is not really the case.

Gary young was supposed to box kell brokes and pulled out with broken hand and the bout was reseduled and brookes pulled out because was stabbed. as for barrie jones gary young was ment to box him in april but they pulled out. but i agree it should have been docherty for the return and kevin mcintrye should have been given the six months grace as this is allowed. considering he beat the champion twice . but this is one reason the tv company are walking away from pro boxing. if you look back over the years sky had boxing for brittish fighter and gave the under card some exposesure now on itv you get only the main events

Just wanna say my bit - think its horrible that a honest hard working pro like Mcintyre has been stripped - losing your title due to politics is the worst possible way to lose it. I hope he is given a shot at the next champion as soon as he's ready to fight.

Black Panther,
He has NOT lost his title due to politics.
He has been stripped, but in my view, made mandatory to the winner of Brook v Jones, and the board have removed the "6 months" clause for the mandatory, meaning they can order the fight to take place as soon as Kevin is ready.
It is a fact that any British Champion, sustaining an injury leading to a prolonged period out of the ring will be ordered / asked to step aside.
Jamie Moore did it recently, having sustained his shoulder injury, requiring surgery.
Jamie has decided he doesn't want to fight at this level anymore, but had he done so, he would automatically be Rhodes mandatory.
I was hoping someone connected with Kevin would have come on here.
The question I have is - Just how bad is the back injury that Kevin has sustained ?
I have a feeling its worse than we all realise.

The thing is, if the BBBoC have made McIntyre the mandatory, it's missing from the statement issued. That leads me to think he isn't confirmed as mandatory (which he definitely should be). Could just be a slip though.

Reading the Board's statement my guess is that McIntyre will accomadated when he's fit to resume. With a back injury it's anyone's guess if he'll be back anytime soon.

Although not the best in the UK, Brook and Jones ain't that bad either. I'm sure we've had worse challengers than both of them in the past.

Struggling to think of worst for a vacant title to be honest. I'd like to see at least one of the guys fight a person in the domestic top ten before fighting for the British title.

Well... considering Ryan's last fight at 154 prior to the Woolcombe fight was in 1997 (according to the stats here) I would say he was more deserving for that title. Should Ryan been in the domestic middleweight mix... yep he should have.

Portman and Woolcombe have better wins on their resume than both Brook and Jones. Portman beat Dixon a few years back and Matolsci, who would be knocking on the door of the top ten if he was British. Woolcombe beat Monterio - who would be in the same position.

Brook and Jones have beaten no-one.

That fight was cobbled together at late notice – several fights being cancelled on that Wigan bill. Portman had six days notice. It was a case of him being offered the chance and taking them up on the offer.

Yeah, the title flattered the 4 of them... but again, 4 fighters well inside the top ten and hold wins over fellow top tenners in the devision... Brook and Jones don't.

This fight may be the worst due to the lack of experience of the fighters involved, but it is better in the way that they have more potential than the fighters in the other two fights.

Either way, it is still a poor fight to be made for the British title and I do not think the board should have accepted it, even if it meant Brooks had to wait a little longer.

In light of McIntyre's comments here, it makes the Board's decision to strip him look even harsher

The Scotsman would not have been stripped if he was with FW
The board have shown great weakness here, perhaps due to the relationship they forged with allegedly after he saved them from bankruptcy after the Watson ruling.
Perhaps the board should create an interim title!! :o

Exclusive - McIntyre 'gobsmacked' at being stripped

Post by dondada »

http://www.britishboxing.net/news_3522- ... ipped.html

He makes a couple of very interesting points here. Firstly, he says he could have boxed within the stipulated period (end June)...he just needed it moved back a fortnight.

More interestingly, he says if he'd have known they were going to strip him, he'd have boxed less than 100% - and makes the further point that his case might encourage other fighters to do the same.

Ian,
I am equally shocked.
However, no one has asked Kev yet exactly what is the injury that led to his withdrawal and how bad is the injury.
What was the opinion / prognosis in the physio report ?
I did say on another thread that rushing back from an injury such as this is dangerous.
In my humble opinion Rhodes did exactly that when taking on Lockett due to rumblings withi the boxing fraternity that he was a bottler following his withdrawal from the first fight.
The devil is in the detail, as they say, and obviously the issue has been debated on other threads.

Ah well at least the happy coincidence of all this is that at least Sports Network now have a headliner to fill their TV slot. I say fair play to the BBBC for stepping in to save the show by needlessly stripping McIntyre. After all if you scratch my back........

26 - Kevin McIntyre is doing a 'media workout' today! I asked his team what the f*ck was going on - how could he do a workout when his back was knackered? They said he's back in full training now. He had lost training time due to it and wanted it postponed so he could be 100%. Kevin reckons he could have made a June 28 date.

Weird.

The point is that having worked so hard to get his belt, he would have boxed when not 100% fit if he knew he was going to be stripped and this sets a dangerous precedent, I think.

Even Braveheart say that the Board are well within their rights to strip him though - the regulation says a champion must be prepared to defend when required, or something along those lines.

It's just huge double standards. My memory is as porous as Derby's defence but who in a similar position (i.e. citing injury) has been indulged? Tony Dodson?

Remember - McIntyre defended less than four months ago!

Off the top of my head, Peter Waudby challenging Ryan Rhodes and Paul Knights challenging Neil Sinclair probably had just as little business contesting the British title as Brook or Jones, and they were both dealt with in quick fashion.

Paul Appleby was a bit lucky to be challenging Simpson in my view too, but he justified his selection with a very gutsy performance.

I agree it's not an ideal pairing for the Lonsdale belt, but think you're being a bit strict with your criteria, StuJones. Nothing wrong with having high standards I suppose.
