How did you score it - Holmes vs Norton 1978
How you guys have it ??
I scored it 145-141 for Holmes,
what a great fight and what an awesome last round.
My GF watched it with me, well she was doing home work...and she
got distracted and sucked into the action.

Re: How did you score it - Holmes vs Norton 1978
If I remember correctly, I gave Holmes the first seven rounds, and one of the late rounds (the 13th, I believe).
I thought Norton won the supposedly crucial last round. However, I still had Holmes winning 8 rounds to 7.
A lot of people claim Norton won the first round (like the commentators), but I always thought that was a clear Holmes round.
I've always thought the last round was a clear Norton round. If the judges indeed had the fight even going into that round and then scored it (and with it the fight) for Holmes, I'd say Norton got screwed there. Then again, on my card, Norton may have been a bit lucky to still be level going into that round (after Holmes' rally in the 13th).
In general, I thought all the rounds were clear cut one way or the other.
Having said all that... what a fantastic fight!!!

Re: How did you score it - Holmes vs Norton 1978
Agreed. That last round I thought was more for Norton than Holmes. Both guys
fought there hearts out in thta round.
I really think Holmes won more rounds than he is given credit for in this bout,
Norton caught alot of jabs and right hands through the first half of the
fight and really offered only handfuls of power shots...most grazing.
The later rounds, both men got down and went at it. Here Norton won some
and Holmes won some. Neither man really lost these exchanges as they
were both hard and exciting.

Re: How did you score it - Holmes vs Norton 1978
I had it 143-142 Holmes, I had Norton winning the last round in spite of Holmes attack in the last 30 seconds. And it was a great fight, I don't care what anyone says...
Re: How did you score it - Holmes vs Norton 1978
Norton definitely won the last round, from what I've seen of it. Holmes put in that eyecatching last 30 seconds and deserved it overall.
Norton came out with one of the funnier boxing cracks before the fight, when he labelled Larry "a pinhead".

I have scored it 144 to 143 in favor of Holmes. I think Norton gave away too many rounds in the first 6 rounds and that probably hurt him. He should have been more agressive. I also saw Norton winning the last round.

No love for Norton? Since when? Giving away early rounds never hurt him in the past on some of your scorecards.
As for me, I thought Holmes won the fight. Only by a round or two. And Norton was 34.

That ridiculous post was enough for elmersalsa to join Elton John on my ignore list.
I'd like to say it was nice interacting with you, elmar, but I'd be lying.
Old Shep done a good job in introducing this new feature.

Re: How did you score it - Holmes vs Norton 1978
Did somebody just offer up a contribution? I think I may have missed it.
Oh I had this fight with Homes up by one round and I have the last round to Norton. I think Norton figured out he was probably behind and this was his last shot and at least in that round he produced enough to just claim it. But too late for my card. To be honest I think I was a bit biased toward Norton. At least I wanted him to win that night.
Anyone know how the judges called the last round?

Re: How did you score it - Holmes vs Norton 1978
They scored the last for Holmes I think atleast according to popular
mythology.
I tried giving more rounds to Norton, but just had Holmes way ahead.

Re: How did you score it - Holmes vs Norton 1978
ALL three judges had the fight even (presumably seven rounds apiece) going into the last round.BoxBuzz wrote:Anyone know how the judges called the last round?
2 of the 3 scored for Holmes, the other for Norton.
I've often seen that round used as the definitive example of judges possibly "forgetting" what had happened earlier in the round and a scoring for the guy who finishes stronger.
The last round has often been the subject of much debate/controversy. Many people believe the judges were wrong to give Holmes that last round (as even this thread has indicated), and that Norton got a raw deal on the decision as the result of it.
But as I've said, I believe the judges were wrong on two counts: giving Holmes the last round, but also having the fight even going into the last round (rather than having Holmes ahead).

No idea how they ALL could have had it even at the 14th.
Does anyone have the pnch stats for this fight ?

HBO Punch stat did not exist back then, I guess.

I'm no fan of heavyweight boxing, but there is no way in the world Norton lost that last round.My2Sense wrote:ALL three judges had the fight even (presumably seven rounds apiece) going into the last round.BoxBuzz wrote:Anyone know how the judges called the last round?

Great fight. Holmes won it by 2 rounds on my card.
Re: How did you score it - Holmes vs Norton 1978
Wow! Talk about revisionist history!
I scored it for Norton by three rounds, he easily took the last round. I saw the fight on closed circuit and everyone around me had the fight for Norton. And if I recall correctly 90% of the guys at ringside had it for Norton too. I was never a Norton fan prior to that fight, but I had to give him his due. He fought his heart out and got robbed by Don King.

Re: How did you score it - Holmes vs Norton 1978
I recall reading from all those journalists and Lederman types how
close this fight was and how it hinged on that final round.
Then when I got the full fight and have scord it for myself and
rewatched it. I just really do not know to say for the
reporters that had it so close or those people that had Norton
ahead by 3 rounds.

There's no way that Holmes won by four rounds. It's funny how Norton's pressure style gets so much less respect when he's fighting Holmes as opposed to other fighters.
