Re: Training in Tenerife
Tony Oakey and Wayne Elcock have trained there under Frank Maloney; the Sheffield boys under Brendan Ingle. Could be the same place.Kevin wrote:Just had a call from a friend of a boxer who wants to do some training in Tenerife, anyone know of the places to go out there and if there are any websites for them

It can be useful, but it can also be determental. More studies need to be done on altitude training, as findings have been mixed. People must acclaimatised properly and also when they comeback. I would recommend for people to train in the enviroment where they are fighting. For example, if its a night time fight - train at night, if its a an altitutde fight train at altitude.
I think the only benefit of going to the warm weather is simply for the warm whether a change of scenery can to a fighter the world of good and of course its alot less disheartening going for runs in the beautiful sunshine. However, if you think your going to get much benefit from it - think again, unless you do it properly.

Good post. I agree a fighter should emulate the fight conditions as much as he can in training. Barry McGuigan said he used to laugh at the Americans (Howard Davis for one) working out in the gym to loud music.stujones wrote:It can be useful, but it can also be determental. Incidentally, John Ingle would be the man to contact about the Tenerife training base (I don't have his number on me). As for Elcock and Oakey, in hindsight I believe they trained in Portugal (but as Steve689 mentioned, Scott Harrison trained in Tenerife, where he said he picked up his much-publicised virus).
yeah scott trained there for a few fights prior to the first medina bout. he reckoned that the weather, altitude etc was spot on. apparently theres some mean hills around there too.steve689 wrote:Didn't Scott Harrison train there before the first Manuel Medina fight?
since his defeat to medina scott has been basing himself in fort william in the scottish highlands for his training camp and training with some ex s.a.s guy whose name i forget. seems to have worked for him. mind you having been to fort william several times i can vouch for its lack of distractions!!
