Good fighters. Jackie Turner, a double ABA champ from the 70's, turned pro with a lot of fanfare but cuts afflicted his progress. Tony Foster and Steve Pollard were solid throughout the 80's, along with Geoff Rhymer, and Tony Booth is still going great guns today.

to the likes of Sonny Pollard (steves son) Matty Teague, Luke Teague . their different styles and ability

Its interesting to see some peoples views on boxing Scooby, sadly as you know there is always some pie scoffer that thinks they know something about a sport, until they state something then really reveal that they know absolutly nothing.

I agree with you that Sonny Pollard is one of the best prospects to come out of Hull since Paul Ingle, and even then Paul was scarbrough based, by the way Paul is doing really well, speaking to him last night at a show in Bridlington, looking better everytime I see him., its great to see.

Southpaw, you can not state that all boxers from Hull are crap ! St Pauls have produced a string of national champions,

(oh for Southpaws benefit, thats NATIONWIDE !)

Also they have had lads travel to Greece, United States, most recently one of the lad has just returned from winning the Bronze medal in the Junior Olympics in Rome.

Scooby you missed out Scott Miller (ABA Champion) another success for both St Pauls ABC and the City of Hull.

I could mention the likes of Lance Crosby, JABA champion, Peter Waudby NABC Champion, Vince Okenyi SABA champion (also beat Naz as an amateur), Vince Collingwood (2 times National Champion) Liam Mulhulland (3 times National Champion, Multi Nations Gold Medalist)

Need I say more ?

sorry i neglected to mention Scott,Lance,Pete and my old school mate Vince.

i just need to get something off my chest.

1 or 2 of this forum,s member,s would be a lot better off if you had something positive to say instead of trying to supersede peoples opinions and views all the time. try reading a book or watching a video occasionally, you never know you might learn something.
one thing i will guarentee is, if you follow MGibbonsMC,s posts you WILL learn something. he probably forgot more than a lot of us will ever learn about the sport we (on this forum) are supposed to love.

99% of people on this forum are VERY knowledgeable boxing fans , but this forum is being spoilt by a few arseholes that think they know something when they actually know fornicate All.

You know who you are , so this post is dedicated to you.

Not stricltly from Hull as in he wasnt born there but has represented Hull East for the last 34 years so i guess he would qualify.... John Prescott MP!! our esteamed deputy pm. fought as an amatuer im led to believe and of course who could forget his stunning straight right ko against the phantom egg thrower a couple of years back?

would give him a pro record i think of 1-0-0.

Ha ha ha ha at the John Prescott point.

Mind you with his chin he looks a little like that spider type monster off Monster Inc, however you did quite rightly point out that Prescot did have an amateur record, but quite simply putting it, never really was a success.

The main factor behind John Prescott was his weight, the ABA officials use to have a nightmare trying to get him to weigh in, come to think about it this was due to the fact that they could not get the fat twat out of the canteen.

He was a successful middleweight in his day to be truthful with you, had around a dozen fights, which he won 1 lost 2 and chickened out of 9.

The one opponent he boxed was a kid from South Africa, apparantly he was thier Middleweight champion at the time, Starvin Hagler.

Speaking to Prescot after his fight, he summed it up in one word, Paralised. He was all down his left side.

When retiring he was asked why, he replied he was sick of two things, firstly, sponsors wanting to advertise on the souls of his feet, secondly he was sick to death of not been allowed to walk back to the dressing rooms, he had a motivational problem, he laid down in the ring then got 8 well built lads to carry him back.

But yeah he sorted the egg thrower out didnt he, I mean they both ended up brawling on the floor with the press snapping off the photo's it reminded me of some of the Herbie Hide press conferences.

to be fair to him prescott fought in the merchant navy in the fifties which was a school of hard knocks.
personally i thought he done okay considering he was around 63 years old when he had his george foreman style comback bout, and the egg chucker was a decent size farmhand i seem to remember.
a lot of younger fella`s wouldnt fancy a tear up with a 16+ stone welsh farmer in his early thirties, so kudos to john who showed plenty of guts. 8)

I also am an ex sparring partnet to Paul Ingle. Paul helped me prepare for the NABC championships.

One fight I recall was with against the Former EBU Bantamweight Champion Noel Wilders. He was from Nottingham if I recalled at the time, I boxed him as a junior at St Pauls gym, Hull. Although he suffered a broken nose, I seemed to recall the judges some how gave him the decision that night.

I offered him a rematch when I bumped into his old coach at a york show, but Noel replied no chance that guy is weighing in over 11 stone.

No I never boxed in any ABA final ! I reached the JABA, SABA NABC's but never boxed for the Senior ABA crown. Although I boxed and beat a kid called Hardie on a club show I never boxed him in championships. Where was hardie from ?

Oh, right. Sorry, you're name rang a bell. Michael Gibbons was a huge-punching bantam who boxed for England and comes from your neck of the woods (East Yorks).
Dave Hardie was a tough Scot who beat Gibbons in the 1991 ABA finals at the Albert Hall. Stood toe-to-toe and outpunched him.

I was a pressure fighter. Small and stocky and yes I boxed at Fly, Bantam mainly. I was hard hitting (or so my record suggests), its bugging me now, I boxed a kid called hardy, he was from Barrow Hill ABC, I stopped him in round 3.

I won the following titles:-

SABA Humberside Champion
(Won by KO rd 3 against P Alexander (Scarborough)

NABC Humberside Champion
(Won by KO rd 1 against M Breckon (Loftus)

JABA Yorkshire Champion
(Won KO rd 1 against Mark Addison (Thorntree)

SABA Yorkshire Champion
(won pts against 2 times National Champion Adrian Benton (Batley & Dew)

NABC Yorkshire Champion
(Won TKO rd 1 against M Stephenson (N Ormesby)

SABA North East Counties Champion
(Won TKO rd 2 M Catterick (J Waltons)

JABA North East Counties Champion
(Won TKO rd 1 against Dave Morrison (Grimthorpe)

NABC North East Counties Champion
(Won TKO rd 1 against Keith Guy (Grimethorpe)

I lost out to on the NABC British title to 2 times champion Andrew Edwards from Kirkdale, Merseyside. It was a little contentious as many were convinced I did enough to secure the win that night at Newcastle. It was toe to toe trading for 3 rounds, I remember his old man coming over and saying I know he is my son but the judges got it wrong there son, you just shrug ya shoulders and say, I had a go didnt I. ha ha life goes on.

He soundly beat me for the JABA honours though, he stopped me in the second round, and as for the SABA well, I will put it down to going to work too late in the fight, I boxed a kid called D Dempsey (Kirkdale), I struggled to make the wieght limit, and I felt weak, I knew I had to pace myself, but when I caught him late in the second round, I kicked myself as I felt I could have stopped him had I gone started out determined and not have the demons in my head. No complaints, the judges had it right, Dempsey got the nod on a unanimous verdict.

I must have bored you to sleep by now so I will stop.

Audley has switched co promoters, he now works with Lion Promotions not Jess Harding UK Presents or at least for this fight. So no I wont be covering that fight, more the pitty, it will more than likely be Mike Goodall doing it.

I was hoping for the call up to do the Hide V Williams as I understand it Jess Harding was going to be the promoter of that fight, however we know with whats happened that fight is off.

Cant grumble, I did the Esham Pickering V Vincento Gilliotti fight at Bradford not so long back, it was televised on BBC Grandstand.

Fascinating breakdown of an excellent amateur record. Nice win over Ady Benton!
Love the amateurs, me. Especially in the days prior to headguards, though the boys are just as good today.
