Oh he definitely fought - don't know how many fights or any titles but I'm fairly sure he entered the ABA's.

He definitely had a SIGNIFICANT number of fights...whatever that means

I actually think Buncey is a decent guy and the post above is pretty accurate in describing the situation. He is in the studio with the 'face of the show' who knows exactly sod all apart from what the director tells him in his earpiece and the auto queue. Buncey is sat there keeping it respectable before handing over to Woodhall and Rawlings in Atlantic City... and...?

At least Buncey understands the game and is realistic...

Aye, you would hear less of Buncey if they had someone else in the studio who could talk with some authority on the sport. It's up to him to fill in loads of down time - and I don't know anyone who can fill time - or a space as far as that goes - like Steve Bunce.

I've said the same thing in defence of Steve Holdsworth when he's on his own - if we had to talk for a couple of hours, the shite ratio would increase in proportion to the amount of time you're on air. So, if he occasionally does veer into the linguistic stratosphere, there's a reason.

Maybe Glyn could sit alongside Buncey...I would however immediately have to cancel my subscription in protest at having Mockney overload. Would be like being stuck in a lift in Walford or wherever these people 'live'. 8)

Wish I never got banned from ESB now, I can't even view the page as a guest. I was looking forward to some Buncey rants.

"Come on Glyn that's a little simplistic and facile. I will never be able to box anywhere near as good as Lockett, Hopkins or maybe even Peter Buckley...and nor could you...but that doesn't mean we haven't got a right to criticise or comment."

Firstly, the remarks to which I responded (and you subsequently responded E), along the lines of "if Bunce wants to do three-hour monologues he should do an Alan Bennet play" — that isn't criticism in my book, just a weak dig based on a total lack of understanding of the situation. No offence to ther fella. But how wrong can you get the situation?

THE SITUATION IS OF SETANTA'S DESIGN, NOT BUNCE'S. Bunce does not ring up Setanta and say "I fancy doing a boxing show and talking myself horse for three hours tonight, set it up for me." Setanta rings Bunce and he has to do his best within the format of the show THEY set up.

And I honestly don't think the situation between Bunce and Setanta is any more complicated that I've presented it E. The difference between Setanta and any other network's coverage is pretty clear — it is IMO very unprofessional and very shoestring. They never get their timings right for fight starts or clips to illustrate points, and quite often Bunce ends up directing the backroom while being on camera through comments such as "can we see a bit of that?". If there is a Sky show with, say, Johnny Nelson as the only pundit, the amount of airtime Johnny is given compared to the amount Bunce is given is far far less — and Johnny gets prompts from the presenter, which Bunce doesn't.

Criticising and commenting is fine E — I do it for a living, for Christ's sake. But I don't think people are grasping quite how shite a format it is that Setanta foist on Bunce. It really is a pig's ear and I think it's a bit unfair for Bunce to be criticised when no one on God's Green 'Un could do a better job of it.

But hey, that's only my opinion and it's good to swap opinions with people who care, that's why I come on here. It's fun, informative and interesting.

It's good to know that Steve Bunce visits, at the least, the major boxing forums. It's also good to know that he is happy to communicate with boxing fans, which I think gives him the edge over journalists who don't, because he really knows what people are saying.

I like listening to what he has to say. I can't really see why people are annoyed with him, other than he's just not their kind of person or they're jealous of his job. We're lucky to have someone like him representing boxing.

Unreal, the lack of understanding of what is a very basic situation here.

So you think it goes like this, yes? Bunce contacts Setanta and says "I want to do a three-hour monologue"? NO.

Setanta contact Bunce and say "You have to sit in a studio with someone who knows fack all and will be of fack all use to you for three hours and make sure that the conversation, which will be entirely one-sided because matey boy know fack all and will be of fack all use to you, doesn't dry up. And no, you won't be getting any help cos we can't afford any."

THAT'S THE REASON FOR THE FACKING THREE-HOUR MONOLOGUE FELLA!

And IMO, very few people other than Bunce would even have the balls to try taking it on. But of course, you could all do it better than him. I'd love to see you try, I really would.

If you read my posts back on this thread I praised the guy for his enthusiasm. My only criticism is that he goes on and on and on and on. And not just when he's carrying the hopeless broadcasters on Setanta.

And we are entitled to an opinion Glyn, you're getting a bit tetchy. As soon as someone mentioned that Bunce does work for you you got on the defensive, even though it was meant in a light-hearted way.

I appreciate your position within the sport and respect it, but get down off your high horse.

There are more positives than negatives about Bunce, he is colourful and cares deeply about boxing.

But he also has a tendency to kiss arse, switch allegiance on a whim and talk utter s*** sometimes.

IMO.

And for your information Mr Leach I once fronted a 48 hour Telethon on the little-known Sky TV channel UK Conquest.....I was brilliant. :D

No seriously, fair play for coming on and sticking up for the guy, I personally have no axe to grind with him, but he does rankle with some. Keep up the good work btw.

I just wrote that I like swapping opinions with others, that's why I'm here in the first place, so Christ knows where you're coming from there. Disagreeing with an opinion should not be mistaken for denying the right to an opinion.

As regards "light-hearted comments" ... I don't know for sure that they were, do you? I can only judge the words that were written. Therefore I have every right to respond as I see fit - including being tetchy if I feel that way (as I might well when it is suggested my loyalties to my writers outweigh my honesty — kind of irritating, that).

As for me being on a high horse, why's that then? For disagreeing with you and pointing out flaws in your arguments? Oh dear ... Are other people not allowed to have opinions and express them then? Is it just you who should be allowed to?

And as for my "position within the sport", that's an issue in your head, not mine. I have never asked for special treatment on here because of my job so why bring it up? I'll stand up and be counted for my opinions on here, under my own name too. You disagree with me, tell me, that's your right — just as it is my right to tell you if I disagree with you. We're all big boys aren't we? What's the problem?

Bunce? Personally I can't stand him, he gets me into all sorts of arguments with strangers. Right, I am now going to ride out of town on my high horse and lay out some pages for the next issue, which, if I say so meself, is looking pretty damned good at this stage.

I think you may be a little oversensitive Glyn. A very playground response.

I just said I respected what you do, that doesn't constitute giving you special treatment does it? You're not a rock star 8)

And the Alan Bennett remark was flippant and light-hearted, if you don't see it like that then it only reinforces my comment about you being oversensitive.

And what flaws in my argument?

"I don't mind Steve Bunce but he goes on and on and on".....you disagree, you think he's fantastic and the UK's answer to Bert Sugar. Not a problem.

End of story. I don't see what all the fuss is about, half of the posters have put worse comments than I did.

No, I mean who is the supposedly useless presenter he is carrying?

I never really watch build up programs, too much needless wittering.
