I must admit I don't understand why some people have got a downer on Steve Bunce. He's a passionate advocate of the sport we love and while he can undoubtedly rattle on a bit I love the fact he so clearly cares about boxing and champions its cause at every given opportunity. OK, he's a 'character', so I can understand that he may rub some people up the wrong way, but give me that over some bland presenter who clearly doesn't have any genuine interest in boxing any day of the week.

Bunce is the man.

Much rather him than some 1/2 wit who does not know Ricardo Lopez from Ricky Martin.

Did anyone see Nicky Piper when he was briefly given the main presenting job at Sky Sports? Maybe he was just filling in once for Dempsey. Nicky looked so wooden and fake.

Firstly, the remarks to which I responded (and you subsequently responded E), along the lines of "if Bunce wants to do three-hour monologues he should do an Alan Bennet play" — that isn't criticism in my book, just a weak dig based on a total lack of understanding of the situation. No offence to ther fella. But how wrong can you get the situation?

THE SITUATION IS OF SETANTA'S DESIGN, NOT BUNCE'S. Bunce does not ring up Setanta and say "I fancy doing a boxing show and talking myself horse for three hours tonight, set it up for me." Setanta rings Bunce and he has to do his best within the format of the show THEY set up.

And I honestly don't think the situation between Bunce and Setanta is any more complicated that I've presented it E. The difference between Setanta and any other network's coverage is pretty clear — it is IMO very unprofessional and very shoestring. They never get their timings right for fight starts or clips to illustrate points, and quite often Bunce ends up directing the backroom while being on camera through comments such as "can we see a bit of that?". If there is a Sky show with, say, Johnny Nelson as the only pundit, the amount of airtime Johnny is given compared to the amount Bunce is given is far far less — and Johnny gets prompts from the presenter, which Bunce doesn't.

Criticising and commenting is fine E — I do it for a living, for Christ's sake. But I don't think people are grasping quite how shite a format it is that Setanta foist on Bunce. It really is a pig's ear and I think it's a bit unfair for Bunce to be criticised when no one on God's Green 'Un could do a better job of it.

But hey, that's only my opinion and it's good to swap opinions with people who care, that's why I come on here. It's fun, informative and interesting.

I know I didn't make it clear (after a few pale ales you see) - but I was just responding to your comment implying that everyone thinks they could do better than Bunce etc.

(I bolded the relevant sentence.) I was trying to make the point that criticism of other is reasonable, even if we couldn't do a better job ourselves.

I actually thought that Piper made a better presenter than a pundit

might be because I was used to him sitting there being himself as apundit. But seeing him addressing the camera square on, and pulling the assortment of smiles and bland faces that presenters usually have, I thought he looked kind of like a clone of Nicky Piper!
