Malibu, on a grand scale
Image
Simon Berlyn Photography
This estate commands sweeping vistas of the Malibu coast, measures 16,000 square feet and has six bedrooms and 12 bathrooms. It is listed for $16.8 million.

The Sea View estate is a grand place to call home -- elegant yet comfortable. And the vistas? Stupendous.

By Diane Wedner, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
June 15, 2008

NEVER MIND that the aptly named Sea View estate is built to withstand any natural disaster Southern California can throw at it. This sprawling three-level mansion is a monument to elegance on a big scale, even by Malibu standards.

Seven years ago, when Shary and Esther Nassimi began work on their dream house with local architect Jonathan Stout, high on their list of priorities was a place where they could entertain grandly and comfortably and also create a warm, fun environment for their children.

To accomplish the latter, each of the three upstairs bedroom suites, designed with kids of all ages in mind, has an office, a bathroom, a deck and views. A large den off the bedrooms has built-in cabinets and an entertainment area. This level also has direct access to the outdoor pool.

"The upstairs wing allows kids to have their friends over and make noise, while not interfering with the adults on the main level," Shary Nassimi said. "But they are not isolated. Every part of the house is integrated."

About this house: This is a home where 100 guests can be seated comfortably at tables in a 1,000-square-foot covered atrium, which has uninterrupted views of the Malibu coast and the Channel Islands. With the dining room on one side of the atrium and the living room -- with 28-foot ceilings -- on the other, visitors can enjoy the vista from indoors or out.

This also is a house where food can be prepared in advance for a crowd and stored in a walk-in refrigerator off the kitchen. An elevator whisks guests to the subterranean level, which has a theater, a gym, a game room, a 1,000-square-foot wine cellar (for 10,000 bottles, or it could be converted into a recording studio) and a 12-car garage. There's room for an extra 100 cars in an unobtrusive outdoor parking area.

"Eight hundred truckloads of concrete were used for the subterranean area," Nassimi said. The foundation is 5-foot-thick steel and concrete, on bedrock, so the house "will not be affected by earthquakes," he added. It has an indoor sprinkler system, and a fire hydrant, on the property.

Asking price: $16.8 million

Size: The home has six bedrooms plus a maid's room and 12 bathrooms in 16,000 square feet. The lot is 6 acres.

Features: The kitchen has two sink stations with dual dishwashers and trash compactors; the master bedroom, on the main level, has a large sitting room and a deck with an ocean view; the master bathroom has separate his-and-her areas and a two-person shower with multiple heads and steam; the den has pool access and views; the laundry room has two sets of washers and dryers and two utility islands; the game room has a full kitchen; every room is wired for the latest electronics, flat-screen connections, multiple phones and cable; and a hydraulic system prevents cabinets and drawers from slamming shut.

Where: Malibu

Listing agent: Andy Stern, (310) 457-1723 and Donald Richstone, (310) 457-4264, Coldwell Banker, Malibu East office.

Sent Frank some shots of where I lived in T.J. when I first got married. The "colonia" is called Canyon Johnson. No one knows how it got that name and I don't think anyone has enough interest to go and find out. All I know is the place is poor and people struggle to make ends meet. Most people who live there don't have steady jobs. Whatever comes along they take until the job runs its course. Some give up and turn to drugs and alcohol. Some steal. Some sell the drugs.

just about every male has been in jail for doing something even if the cops just wanted to yank them off the street just to shake them down. I'm glad I made it out of there. Most didn't. That was because they didn't have papers. Unless you're connected, forget it. It's either the boxing gym, crime,or peddling your hips if you want to make some dough. Boxing is a real gut check. Not many succeed. Crime is a ticket to jail or the cemetary. Prostitution is for women to lose their souls.

But here's a story about a kid who had papers and went to school up in Monterrey. His name is Moises. He went to live up there with his sister who had a Mexican restaurant along with her husband. Moises was quite an athlete. He finished third in the State Finals in the mile run. He was only like a half a second behind the first place guy. I saw the photo of the finish. Moises and the two other guys all hit the tape together.

Well Moises comes back to Canyon Johnson to visit his mother. He's got a letter from his track coach. It reads something to the effect that Moises is only a junior and next year if he continues to work hard, should easily win the State Championship and earn a scholarship to college. But the coach emphasized that Moises must return to school if this was going to happen.

I read the letter to his mother and of course she was very proud. But I don't think she understood the importance of her son returning to school. Maybe she thought that third place was enough. I don't know, but Moises never went back to Monterrey to finish school. He hooked up with his other sister's boyfriend,Rojas. Been in jail. Had kids all over LA. and Mexico ,and made a living selling drugs. Do I need to go on?

Moises is nearing 50 now. Been in just about every jail in the U.S. and Mexico for selling drugs.Peddly ass shit. Don't know how he still hangs on to his Green Card. He smokes and uses crystal. Has lost a lot of weight. Funny,he always wants to look presentable. Clean shirt and slacks. Always clean shaven. And he's also one of the nicest kids
I've known in Canyon Johnson. Always talking about how he's straightened out and is on his way to making something of himself. Sleeps in his old van out in the street. Wakes up late. Always has a smile and a sense of humor. Can't help but like him. But his two other brothers don't have much patience with him. Thay weren't athletes. They busted their butts all their lives to make ends meet. They talk about how Moises let the chance of a lifetime go by. Not much sympathy from them.

My daughter was a County Champion in Cross Country when she went to high school. For a while Moises helped train her. I told him he ought to go back to school and be a coach. He said that sounded like a good idea and he'd think about it. All I know is he went back to jail soon after that.

I went back for a visit today to Canyon Johnson. Who do I see? Moises.
"Hey Moi,how's it going?"
"Pretty good Roger(about the only one down there that calls me by my American name)"
I gave him a quick look. Had on a sweater and a nice pair of running shoes.
"What do you have goin' on today,Moi?"
"Oh,I thought I'd take the day off."

Like I said before. I'll be in sunny Spain with my wife ,Amanda, and Adam(My grandchildren)on the 20th. Amanda and Adam study Flamenco there. Boy, I'll say this about Southern Spain(Andalucia). I don't think they've ever heard of boxing. Flamenco and bullfighting. Urtain,Carrasco,Legra. They all fought in the North ,or Barcelona. But they aren't that backwards. They have the Internet. I'll be seeing what you guys are up to. BTW,Frank show'd me a photo of his new dog,Chata. The dog looks like it could tow a Mack truck and also eat one. If you don't hear from Frank again, just figure the dog looked at Frank and got hungry.

Yeah, Danny answered it perfectly.
What was Merchant looking for Danny to say anyway?
The fighters situations are clear.Lopez didnt need to point out anything and he didnt.

That's what bothers me about boxing. Everybody around the fighters(promoters, managers, writers, sport casters)for the most part are sneeky little bastards.Even a guy like Tyson was ripe for a character like Don King. I don't know who said it,but I really hope that"The meek will inherit the Earth."

Brian London vs Tom McNeeley
London took part in a typical brawl with Boston longshoreman McNeeley in a 10-rounder at London's Olympia in 1963. Referee Harry Gibbs let them foul away for a few rounds then barked, "Right, you've had your fun, now let's see some boxing!
"You know," added Gibbs, "they behaved like proper gentlemen for the rest of the fight."
London won on points.

When I think of the dignity and pride that Archie Moore exuded. When I think of how he wanted to help kids not only learn how to box,but using boxing as a vehicle to learn good values in life. How he had the respect of everyone in the community and how he gave such a good rep to the community, this absolutely appalls me. Ted Williams's old house is still lived in in North Park. It's owned by a modest couple. The house is very small . I know the city would never let it fall into the wrong hands in the end. Probably make it a City Historical Landmark. Bennie, here's an insight to what Archie Moore meant to Southeast San Diego.

It had been a while since I'd been over there to his house. I was driving around and I knew I was close. I saw this young guy dressed down in "blue" with his woman and a kid in a stroller. The guy was probably some sort of "crip" gang member. I pulled the car over and asked if he knew where Archie Moore's house was.
"Who da' fornicate is dat?"
"Archie Moore. He's got the house with the swimming pool like a boxing glove."
"Oh. You mean the ex fighter?"
When the guy realized who I was talking about,he simmered down and became friendly and anxious to give me directions.
"Oh yeah. What you need to do is go left up here on Market Street and then make another left at the first corner. His house is at the end of the block."

I guess if you're ever in Southeast San Diego and you're confronted by gang members, just tell them you're looking for Archie Moore's house.

Joe Louis & Lou Nova
You have to feel sorry for anyone fighting a peak Louis. They were in for a bit of a beating.
I read an article a while back . An interview with Lou Nova just brfore he passed. He was all pissed off at Ray Arcel, his trainer, for not getting him ready to fight Louis. I couldn't make heads or tails of what he was taliking about. Nova said Arcel was never a fighter and knew nothing about boxing. After reading the interview,I figured Nova knew nothing about how to accept defeat.
