Lionel Rose

Did anybody else see the story in the Fairfax papers yesterday on Lionel Rose? Seems Lionel is in a bad way and not expected to live much longer.

Here is the link (it is a 4 page article):

http://www.smh.com.au/news/sport/fight- ... 83301.html

It is a sad read and after reading it, it reminded me of the poignant last verse of Simon and Garfunkel's song: The Boxer:

In the clearing stands a boxer, and a fighter by his trade
And he carries the reminders of every glove that laid him down or cut him
til he cried out in his anger and his shame
I am leaving, I am leaving, but the fighter still remains
Yes he still remains

Lionel will always remain!

thanks for that Beltane.

Well, i don't feel sorry for him, I don't reckon he'd like that. I just think of the footage I've seen of him and the joy he's given all who saw him fight, not to mention the great bloke he obviously is.

Unbelievable skilled boxer and could hit harder than most thought. The reception he got after beaten Harada will
never be matched again in Oz. The article in my view was shit and I didnt personally like the way he wrote the story.

Rose did what was considered unthinkable, when he went into Harada's backyard on short notice and whupped the great bantamweight champion. What a great exhibition of boxing by Rose.

Personally, I don't think he ever quite reached that level again.
