British title question and some thoughts.

Post by stujones »

Sorry for the bizarre thread title.

Its just I have had a question posed to me in a pub a few weeks ago when trying to explain the situation about a fighter winning the belt outright, and the question completely stumped me. What happens if a fighter making the final defence to earn the belt outright gets a draw in the defence, does he get to keep the lonsdale belt outright?

Also in the line of recent stripping of the the title or reliquishing the belt, I was just wandering what would peoples opinion would be if the BBBoC awarded the belt (not outright obviously) to the #1 contender.... and his first DEFENCE would be against a BBBoC stipulated opponent.... maybe the opponent needing to win an eliminator first. Whilst, I don't like seeing belts not being won - I also don't like seeing an easy(ish) first notch for a fighter by facing an unworthy opponent for the vacant title.

Note: I don't think Meager vs Murray fits the bill, but Kell Brook's vacant title win (and first notch towards keeping it outright) wasn't against a guy deserving of a shot, I would say Oakey vs Spartacus was the same.

Any views on this?

You must have at least one mandated fight among your notches to win a belt outright. It has to be four wins at one particular weight and not neccessarily in one reign. One of the four wins has to be against a mandatory challenger.

Weren't sky trying to state that if Oakey beat Francis then he would have had the belt outright?

I see his run (had he beaten Francis) as three wins (Spartacus, Haymer and Francis) and a draw (Magee).

Was any of these his mandatory?

Once you win the belt - you have to defend it 3 times successfully to ear the belt outright and as stated one must be a mandatory.

Good question about the draw scenario - but I think you have to successfully defend it 3 times and a draw should count as a success as the champ gets to keep the belt.
