Did Herbie Hide really say all this?

Post by bennie »

Jimmy on Boxing Addicts has cited a press release on Herbie Hide (after the fighter's cut eye loss to Mendaugas Kulikauskas). Jimmy, always on the ball, is extremely sceptical that Herbie said all he said in the release. The release can be found, where else?, on ESB. And written, who else?, by someone arrogantly parading himself as British Eastside (we all know who that is, don't we?).
Herbie Hide seems to have become Oscar Wilde overnight.

Hide lost? I am still saving the Froch bill for a rainy day but am finding out the results bit by bit. Surely it will not affect his fight with Williams though?

I will state my feelings quite clearly now re politics between different sites - I'm better off out of it!

Re this press release though...we received it yesterday (at BBN) from someone purporting to be 'Herbie Hide' at a hotmail address. I emailed them back asking them to either ring or fax me to confirm it was legit. It may be, but I've had nothing as yet.

There's no way we can put it up or use it until we know it's genuine. It's full of good quotes though!

So I take it this wasn't an official press release then...

Is it really that easy to stir up trouble? I mean someone could e-mail your self with a [email protected] address and say, "Hi I'm George Foreman, I want to give BBN an exclusive that I am self-promoting my comeback and I would like start my comeback by beating up and grilling some of Britain's finest heavyweight beef"

Then you would e-mail ask if you confirm this is legit - that's all George Foreman would need to reply is "yes" and it would be announced.

Thats sounds very easy to do and very dodgy to me.

Stu, do you think I'm mental or what!?

I wouldn't accept an email as confirmation, which is why I didn't accept the press release (unless it was from a reliable source), for exactly the reasons you have given!

I emailed them to tell me to either fax or ring. Sure, you could send a dodgy fax or con me over the phone but it would be more difficult. If I was still unconvinced, it wouldn't get used.

My golden rule - when in doubt, say nowt. For two reasons - you could be filling your readers with rubbish (not for the first time, I hear you!) and, worst case scenario, you end up getting sued.

I wrote to Hennessy to ask them if it was official, but as yet, have heard nothing back.

The BBC have it on their site, as does boxing central

Of course he didn't Bennie, but you and I both know this thing goes on a lot, and this little incident is not unique by any means. The worst offender for me is one of Boxing News' Scottish correspondents (can't remember which one, but might be Brian Donald), who always attributes ridiculous quotes to Scottish fighters (both amateur and professional), which make them sound more like academics. As a journo it's easy to spot these a mile off.
The frequent Calzaghe quotes/interviews courtesy of Sports Network are also no different to this effort (I assume by Spud) and equally difficult to equate with the man interviewed at ringside.
That's why people have PRs and publicists!

Very few fighters have anything to do with those press releases, as far as I can see anyway. Many fighters are not articulate enough to write those sort of things, that's the job of the PR men, to make it appear like the fighter has said those things and they were dictating them.

Certainly Herbie is not the most coherent of chaps at the best of times, so it's quite hard to coneive of anyone recording his conversations with a dictaphone.

True. I wince when I see press releases published on websites. The late, great Harry Mullan once said: "Never go to a press conference or take any notice of a press release.
"They're telling you what THEY want you to hear," he said.

He really does look like he's pissing in a milk bottle, excellent observation...made me laugh.

Press conferences tend to be much ado about nothing really, but they are good opportunities to meet and greet and shake hands....

I was going to go to the Audley one, but I got me days wrong, might go to the weight in....
