Well I am having a fag as I write. These laws are disgusting, we should be able to choose between a smoking pub or a no smoking pub. Pubs are closing down everywhere. I dont go to pubs anymore and I know quite a few like me. Its killing the licenced trade. For many of us a pint and a fag go together. Last time I went to the IOW I had a meal and then went out for a fag. I stood on the front, it was cold wet and windy and decided I had had enough. Just the one drink instead of the usual 3 or 4. The pub had always been busy but there were only around six of us in there including my wife and I. My local used to have a quiz night, they have had to stop that. Three pubs have been demolished and others have closed. If the police tighten up on how much you can drink it will kill the trade off even more. We believed rightly or wrongly 2 pints of Carling or 2 glasses of wine was a safe amount. New legislation would make that illegal. The out of town pubs would really suffer. Who wants to go to a country pub and drink lemonade or orange juice, I dont. So thats it a few cans, nuts or crisps and enjoy the comforts of my own home.

Well as a non smoker - I can see both sides of the arguement...... I like the idea of a smoking pub, although that would probably split my group of friends up in half. For example, I don't think I could stick it if everyone smoked in the pub. I don't mind a few smokers in the pub (infact, it hides some of the nasty smells you can smell now - like Spew). A pub of 20 people smoking, not sure I would go.... but appreciate that smokers should have as much free will as non-smokers.

Well as a non smoker - I can see both sides of the arguement...... I like the idea of a smoking pub, although that would probably split my group of friends up in half. For example, I don't think I could stick it if everyone smoked in the pub. I don't mind a few smokers in the pub (infact, it hides some of the nasty smells you can smell now - like Spew). A pub of 20 people smoking, not sure I would go.... but appreciate that smokers should have as much free will as non-smokers.

I hadnt even thought about its alternative meaning. You make some good points on smoking, I am told some pubs now have even nastier smells than tobacco smoke such as wiffs from the toilets, cheap perfume and stale beer in the carpets, things we never noticed before. Back in the 90s I got a dose of real flu and was forced to give up smoking while I was ill. When I got better I continued not smoking. I remember going into a pub and the smoky atmosphere got to me to such an extent I had to sit in my car to drink my pint. Shortly afterwards I weakened and started smoking again and the next time I went in that pub it felt "normal" again. I do believe pubs should either have a smoke room with an air extractor or landlords should be able to choose to have smoking or no smoking pubs, rather than a complete ban. There are so many pubs that are really no more than ale houses and these are the pubs that seem to be suffering the most while pubs offering good food and who have a good reputation are still doing well. They say smoking and sport dont mix but a pub near me known for being a sport orientated pub was always full of smokers. Four huge screens for the football, cricket, rugby etc and it was packed out especially for special events. The pub is dead inside these days, but now that the weather is warmer a lot of people are sitting outside. I would think the place is barely surviving. Another pub owner has had two of his pubs demolished and a third has been closed and will be pulled down soon. Desperate times for the licenced trade.

Theres a few pubs in a price war at the moment round by us trying to attract new business, you can get a meal for a £1 which they freely admit that they lose out on, but hope to make it back (and more) in the beverages. The days of the having proper pubs about will soon be long gone and we'll have the choice between Bastard Wetherspoons or Fcuking Yates's.

I agree that something needed doing about smoking in places such as bars as it's unfair on non-smokers to a point (they could fcuk off elsewhere), but a total blanket ban is very harsh on smokers and licensees. As you say they should be allowed a smoking room with an extractor fan it if they so wish. The ban dramtically reduced the amount of time that I spent in the pub through the winter time (October to May)
