Helping Gomez or is this just SN Spin?

Khan blasts 'disloyal' Harrison
Published: Thursday, 19 June 2008, 6:30PM

Amir Khan has launched a scathing attack on his former trainer Oliver Harrison after learning he has been helping prepare Michael Gomez ahead of their Commonwealth lightweight title clash in Birmingham on Saturday.

Khan and Harrison split two months ago in unhappy circumstances and Gomez has been a regular recent visitor to the Bolton star's old gym in Manchester, where Harrison has helped him with conditioning and tactics.

Khan, who has since linked up with Dean Powell, accused Harrison of disloyalty and said the trainer with whom he began his professional career had failed to bring him on at the speed he had hoped.

Khan said: "You definitely lose respect for a coach when that happens because it is only two months since he split with me. Top coaches would never do a thing like that so it shows what kind of person he is.

"But to have someone like Oliver telling Gomez tips is fine. I didn't learn anything from Oliver in the way of defence. There are things I'm working on with Dean now that I really should have done in my first five fights.

"At the end of the day, Oliver is a coach and he is allowed to coach anyone. But we will see how good a coach he is on Saturday night when Michael Gomez gets knocked out."

Gomez's training programme will add more spice to a contest that has already attracted 10,000 to the National Indoor Arena. Khan raised the bar yesterday by labelling Gomez an "idiot" for missing the pre-fight press conference.

Harrison was the Khan camp's first choice for his much-publicised professional bow and the pair initially appeared a tight unit. But the relationship unravelled in the wake of Khan's points win over Gairy St Clair in February.

Harrison was not available for comment, while neither Gomez nor his full-time trainer Bobby Rimmer were prepared to name the man Gomez has called his "mystery trainer" in the build-up to the fight.

Sources in the Harrison gym have confirmed Gomez has spent time working with Harrison as he looks to re-ignite his career by becoming the first man to defeat the Olympic silver medallist.

However, Khan has laughed off Gomez's chances, insisting: "I know how good I am and I know Michael Gomez is not going to beat me in a million years in that ring on Saturday night.

"It is laughable. Gomez can be as fit and prepared as he wants but with my power and speed and skills, he is not going to beat me. I am going to break him down big-time. I am in the best condition of my career."

I HOPE GOMEZ KNOCKS HIM OUT!

Amir Khan leaves Oliver Harrison and when Harrison trains someone else to make a living he is the disloyal one?

Exactly. Why does Khan think it's ok for him to f**k off somewhere else when he wants, but Harrison can't train someone else. Maybe fighters should be forced to sign contracts with trainers like they do with promoters and managers so that they can't treat them like s**t. Joe Goossen has been arguing for this for years. It makes sense considering the trainer is there every step of the way when a fighter is preparing for a fight. Managers and promoters aren't.

I know Khan is right but nevertheless I would love to see a surprise upset. Khan didnt take Willie Limond seriously and I remember when Khan hit the deck, I hit the roof with excitement. Very talented fighter but his huge ego pisses me off. Instead of watching people like Khan and Froch and hoping they win, I watch to see them knocked off their pedestool. I dont like to hear fighters boasting about how good they are. A bit of confidence is another matter entirely. My bet is both fighters will have a loss or losses on their record over the next two years. Naz said he just couldnt be beaten, and was. Once in the top league fighting the elite you are likely to come unstuck if you believe that. Self belief is important but thinking you cant be beaten is not showing enough respect for your opponent. Joe Calzaghes fear of losing and giving respect to all his opponents has kept him winning. I blame the media for a lot of Khans attitude. Lets be honest his career has been very short so far compared to Calzaghe and Hatton yet his name and face are better known to the general public. For somebody so young that has to have a big impact on his personality. Calzaghe and Hatton had to work hard to get recognition in the pro ranks, whereas Khan arrived a star in his first pro fight.

I still don't know where all this "Amir Khan ego" BS is coming from. IMO, his trash talk is just the same as any other boxers.

Give the lad a break.

You see, that is where you are wrong.

Calzaghe and Hatton had/have a very engineered career. Warren expertly guided their fights to get the Most reward/Least possible Risk in nearly every bout.

Hatton's first Prime v Prime Bout was against Mayweather, and he we all know what happened.

Calzaghe was made to look a joke against a 43 year old Hopkins.

These are the so called "British Champs". Perhaps that is the reason why Khan is more popular. Since Khan is making his way to the Top. Not goin 3/4 of the way and saying he is at the top.

Top coaches certainly do do this sort of thing, look at PBF's old man
And Khan is not in a position to call Harrison disloyal

It is a good point but the trainer is mainly in a no-win situation. He is the guy who has to deliver the honest truth to these guys and say it how it is. When the fighter listens to him, wins and then progresses, he takes the credit. It is when the hangers on, the never wassers and leeches suddently start appearing and blowing smoke up the arses of thes fighters, telling them that they are great that the trouble starts. Many fighters would rather listen to these sweet nothings than the cold hard truth. When they get beat, who do they blame? The trainer.

Amir Khan is the latest in a long line of fighters to fall into this trap and he won't be the last. I can think of a few other boxers (including some posters on here  ) who could write the manual for Khan when it comes to excuses and the wheels come off.

You couldnt have two more contrasting personalities as Gomez Harrison. Anything that tips the scales slightly towards Mikes corner is a plus for me. Is there a link to this?

I'm not one of these people who likes to see Our top boxers beat, because they develop abit of attitude, but in saying that I have a BIG soft spot for Gomez so I wouldn't be pissed off if he pulled off the upset.

How Khan has the cheek to bring up the word 'disloyal' after just dumping Oliver is beyond me? Thats like Hitler saying that Churchil was barbaric

As if this will make a difference anyway, Khan is simply too big and fast for Gomez who hasn't exactly set the world alight in his last few performances has he?
Gomez is a tough, game fighter who I've been a big fan of through the years but I'll be suprised if he lasted into the 4th and I'll be absolutely staggered if he wins.

I suppose that i am in the minority on here in that i don't want to see boxers lose if i don't like their personalities. I enjoy watching good boxing and if some of good boxers seem to be turning into obnoxious arseholes then i'll just avoid the press conferences and after fight interviews etc.

However we should bear in mind that Amir's still only 21 and if most of us had the money, the fame and constant lackies and people in the business telling us that the world was at our feet there's a good chance we'd end up just as unpleasant as he seems to be becoming.

As much as I dislike Hatton for ducking Junior Witter, I still can't support his opponent (unless he's English).

That makes me a far better person than you HH :TU: :D

OK so you dont rate the achievments of Calzaghe or Hatton, but it doesnt alter the fact that it took time for them to become recognized, while Khan was a star in his first pro fight. Khan has disrespected other fighters, no it isnt just boxing hype, and coupled with his lack of concern for other road users and pedestrians he has lost a lot of fans and support generally. I was defending his behaviour on account of his huge success at such a young age in order to be fair and balance things out.

against another damaged goods superfeather weight.
I`m really suprised there hasn,t been uproar about this farcical fight.

If Khan was really chinny wouldn't we be hearing about sparring partners dropping him, rather than him beating up sparring partners?

I don't think he's chinny so much as having bad defence and an avarage chin, partly because of Harrison it must be said.
