strangest boxing memories.
strangest boxing memories.
Is there any boxing memories that stick out for you for particularly odd reasons.
I remember a Heavyweight fight shown on the BBC about 15-20 years ago between a Welsh fighter and and English fighter (who was coloured). Now, the Welsh fighter was clearly the Journeyman and looked like he hadn't trained in years, I think the English guy was some prospect - but he didn't go much futher.
It was a long contest, but what I remember was this poor old Welshmen facially he was in a right state with a combination of snot and blood pooring out of his nose.
After about the 5th round this gungy stuff coming out was uncontrollable, so what did the Welsh man do - try and grap on to the Englishman as often as he could and rub his nose on the shoulder of the propect. In the end, the poor Englishman's shoulder was covered in snot and blood.
It was a piss poor fight involving two fighter who didn't get anywhere, but it is still one of my most vivid memories of watching boxing as a kid. It was funny as feck.
I can remember my mother saying "Why is the fat man using that guys shoulder as a hankichief". In the end I lost interest in the fight cause I was doubling up in luaghter.
Anybody remember this? Any other weird memories?

And before McGuigan-Pedroza. Started running sround the ring like Frank Maloney on speed. Pedroza had boxed all over the world in his 19 WBA title defences, but I bet he'd never seen anything like that.neil r wrote:there was the wee leprechaun guy who came into the ring before the first eubank collins fight throwing glitter everywhere!
Having Nigel Kennedy performing the National anthem at Old Trafford just after the season in which the premiership title went to the wire between Villa and United wasn't such a good idea.
Anyone else remember God save the queen getting booed in England? Well, this is what happend prior to Benn vs Eubank 2.

Frank Maloney perhaps?! I remember Bowe-Golota for some reason, i think it was the second one when it kicked off. I wasn't a real Boxing fan back then but i loved it watching the highlights on Grandstand or something like that.neil r wrote:there was the wee leprechaun guy who came into the ring before the first eubank collins fight throwing glitter everywhere!

Re: strangest boxing memories.
That Welsh fighter sounds very much like Andrew Gerrard. His opponent was almost certainly Johnny Nelson.stujones wrote:Is there any boxing memories that stick out for you for particularly odd reasons.

Quite possibly, sorry of course Johnny did well! Didn't think it was him.bennie wrote:That Welsh fighter sounds very much like Andrew Gerrard. His opponent was almost certainly Johnny Nelson.stujones wrote:Is there any boxing memories that stick out for you for particularly odd reasons.

I always thought it was an undercard fight, maybe for a Honeyghun show - it was definately on the BBC though and the date sounds feesable.
Of course the fight was a typical Nelson fight, but the rubbing his nose against the shoulder bit had me in histerics.
One of the funnier older incidents came in the 10-rounder between Boston's Tom McNeeley (father of Peter) and Blackpool's Brian London at Olympia in 1963. For three rounds, the heavyweight hard men committed every foul in the book. They butted, gouged, hit below the belt and turned it into a street brawl. A young Harry Gibbs was refereeing and said in his autobiography, he didn't want to disqualify them because the crowd was enjoying it. Then midway through the fourth, he barked: "Okay, you've had your fun, now let's see some real boxing.stujones wrote:You could be correct - just it sticks out.
I don't think Ojay Abrahams kick at Brendan Ingle will ever leave my long term memory bank either!
"Do you know," Gibbs continued, "for the remainder of the fight, they behaved like proper gentlemen."
McNeeley won on points.

Yeah, Steve McCarthy against Tony Wilson. Wilson's mum did the high heel bit.knockout wrote:who can forget that guys mum getting in the ring and hitting the opponent over the head with her shoe.... the black guy was Tony something I think.... classic
Steve Holdsworth made a small fortune on the clip.

You can see him thinking: "Mum, I am a grown man, I can do my own fighting..."

March 1990 Wembley (though I watched it on telly) Honeyghan-Breland.
I was mad for hip-hop and Breland came out to Big Daddy Kane's 'I Get The Job Done'. (A classic, trust me.) I used to love Lloyd - when his name was announced he went centre ring and thrust him arm towards Breland and looked intense and menacing (I think Aaron Pryor used to do this too, no doubt I will be corrected if not). I could hardly contain my excitement as I waited for the Raggamuffin to do the business!
Then it started. Six knockdowns and three rounds later, it was over and not in Lloyd's favour. He looked a shell of his former self. In despair, seeing one of my heroes blitzed I taped over it. Damn!
Another favourite memory was seeing Lloyd beat Don Curry...I think it was lunchtime on ITV. Awesome.

Being absolutely out of my skull watching the first Lewis-Holyfield fight. I had been on the piss since midday having been priviliged enough to see Spurs play Villa in a private box with customers, this drink carried onto to midnight at which stage I got a cab to my local snooker club for the fight and carried on drinking until the wee hours. Savage.
Watched the rematch in a bar in Mexico with about 150 yanks, 50 Mexican cab drivers and 4 of us English which was also quite memorable.
Maybe not strange but memorable...
