Norton had Ali's number big style. Ali never solved Norton's style & lost twice to him IMO.
Re: Fighters Who Had The Other Guy's Number
I'd say Jose Luis Ramirez had Edwin Rosario's number. Rosario barely edged him in the first fight (many people still thought Ramirez won anyway), and then got stopped cleanly in the rematch.
Re: Fighters Who Had The Other Guy's Number
And you can add Ortiz-Lidell to that list.Grimm wrote:Quinton Jackson - Chuck Liddel
Though I think we are off topic :P
Re: Fighters Who Had The Other Guy's Number
Getting back to the topic, Tippy Larkin appeared to have Billy Graham's number, but Graham has gone on to become the more celebrated fighter.
Re: Fighters Who Had The Other Guy's Number
I agree about Golota-Bowe; Bowe could never have won those fights without the disqualifications. Winning by virtue of getting punched in the balls does not prove anything about your skills. However, I'd take issue with Ayala-Tapia. Fairly close in the first fight, and I could not understand the decision in the second fight.Jaywheel wrote:Tarver has Jones number

That was only one fight. And it happened at a weight class that it was Duran's worst class in his career.Grimm wrote:Because of styles. Duran was built all wrong for Hearns, Leonard and Durans styles were nothing alike.elmersalsa wrote:Borinken25 wrote:Thomas Hearns would’ve KO Duran at any weight class and at any time. Hearns did have Duran’s number.
He could not beat Sugar Ray at welterweight, how he's gonna beat Duran?
I would like to see the Hearns that KO Cuevas vs Duran that beat Sugar Ray in Montreal HEAD TO HEAD, and it would be a DIFFERENT STORY...Duran by knockout.

Fat Willie Meehan was 2-2-1 over Jack Dempsey in four-round fights right up to the year before Dempsey won the title.

Ali lost 3 times with Norton in my view...the promoters and stinking judges saw the $$$$$$$. You cannot make money with Ken Norton.Syntax Error wrote:Norton had Ali's number big style. Ali never solved Norton's style & lost twice to him IMO.

Re: Fighters Who Had The Other Guy's Number
Ali clearly won the second fight, and was shot in the third. Similar to Robinson-Fullmer where Fullmer was able to win the series because Robinson was getting older and older with every fight. A prime Ali would have beaten Norton a little easier. It goes back to Holmes; Holmes was able to fight Norton when he was in his prime and where Norton was 34, so Holmes was able to get the close decision and so no one thinks anything of it. If Holmes had been 34 fighting a prime Norton like Ali did in their third fight, then Norton would have kicked his ass and everyone would say Norton had Holmes' number. Norton had the benefit of circumstances against Ali, not his number, and when he met an in shape Ali who was not yet an old fighter he lost clearly.

More expertise on display from pugilistic newcomer, Jaywheel. Only someone who hadn't a clue what they were speaking of could ever be convinced a fighter like Antonio Tarver had Roy Jones' number. Did Ezzard Charles have Joe Louis' number? Did Leotis Martin have Sonny Liston's number? LOL.
Then there is the small matter of Jaywheel's assertion Golota had Bowe's number --- a fighter he failed to best in two outings --- their only two outings. Points for enthusiasm, Jaywheel
Wow if any example fits this thread it would have to be Tarver vs. Jones.
Yes Tarver lost the first fight on paper but many people believe that he actually beat Roy Jones, who at the time was considered a boxing "god". The next two fights (mainly the 2nd) he won in a convincing fashion.
Now the reason Tarver has Jones number is because Tarver has accomplished very little in his career other then beating Roy Jones. He may lose to other fighters that Rjj would beat, but he will never look bad against Jones.
By comparing the two Jones is much better and I don't even believe that Tarver has a hall of fame career, but do I believe he'll make Roy Jones look bad whenever they fight? YES!!!!
