I wonder whether this affects the other fighters from the Calzaghe stable? I would guess they're still under contract for now.

From the South Wales Argus article:
The split will not affect the other Team Calzaghe boxers represented by Warren, including Bradley Pryce, Gavin Rees, Nathan Cleverly and Enzo Maccarinelli.

Thanks for posting that, making all clear.

I wonder though, when their contracts run out, will they go with Calzaghe?

Also, are there too many promoters now in the UK?

Will Calzaghe continue as a promoter when his fighting career is over? Or is this a one-off for his final fight? Why has he not accepted Fwank's offer of a partnership?

Hatton, Haye and Calzaghe are a genuine short-term threat to Warren, far more than Hennessy, FA and Matchroom ever were.

The trio bring a lot of contacts and public recognition. They also, all know the life of a fighter.

Warren will survive but his next TV deal, you would think, is crucial. Because if he doesn't dominate one of the big boxing channels, his USP's re significantly reduced.

His power attracted the fighters that give him power. The self-fulfilling cycle may be on the wane.

Well Calzaghe is his own man, but from rumours Frankie Gavin and a couple of the other olympic lads are signing with Frank.

Was it Mickey Duff who said if you want loyalty buy a dog?

Wonder how this will affect Warren and Enzo Calzghes deal?

Wonder why Joe passed up the chance to become a partner in SN, Frank can't go on for ever so he would have a chance to learn from Frank, and then take over a fully fledged promotional outfit instead of going it alone if thats what he's going to do.

He'll surely have to work with another promoter though, because you can't promote world title fights if you're starting up. That said, he can defend his magazine title, which isn't a sanctioning body, and maybe there is a loophole with the ring title (as opposed to WBO, WBA, WBC, and IBF).[/quote]

Its quite clear Ca;zaghe wants a bigger slice of the pie, but exactly how much of the pie does he think he'll get without Warren promoting his last fight? I mean, if Joe is able to make significantly more without Warren's services, then why has it taken so long for him to fly the nest?

Roy Jones is a shot fighter. Calzaghe will prove nothing by beating him. Its an easy fight for Calzaghe in my view & that's not being disrespectful to Jones. If the fight was six years ago, I'd be backing Jones to win.

Pavlik is clearly a tougher assignment for Calzaghe & Joe knows this. Calzaghe cannot claim that there's not enough money for him to box Pavlik, because I think its a highly lucrative & popular bout. People would pay to see it!

One take of events that has been put to me is quite interesting.
FW tried to force JC to take the Pavlik fight because Fwank wants options on Pavlik
FW felt he could get a piece of Pavlik as part of the deal for making the JC fight, and Joe felt FW would be cheering for his opponent, so refused to play ball

I agree. Jones, as incredible as he was in his halcyon years is now a faded-hero. That isn't just the fact either, it's also the general perception of his current standing.

Conversely Pavlik is the rising star and collectively his and Calzaghe's stock may be the highest in the pro ranks. I refuse to believe that this contest would be less lucrative that the touted Jones swansong.

One thing I will dispute is the risk involved in fighting Jones. Although RJ is years removed from his prime, he still has very fast hands and is a legitimately concussive puncher (carrying far more weight in his hands than Pavlik). Providing Jones doesn't go into a defensive shell and wait for an opening all night whilst Calzaghe outworks him, there's a greater chance than most people think of Joe's 0 being snatched away inside of the sceduled 12 rounds.

To be honest I think this whole legacy thing is a redundent issue because whatever the fans say; Calzaghe is a virtual lock for the hall of fame and whichever of the two matches Joe selects, each is laden with it's own set of hazards, but for him to infer that Pavlik has less commercial potential than RJ at this point is bordering on absurd IMO.

I could see Calzaghe beating RJJ in front of 60,000 at Millenium, making himself £6-8million and thinking, yeh, one more versus Pavlik - who will have beaten Abraham or Sturm and Duddy by then.....

The fight will be bigger - make it at 175 pounds too.

Calzaghe may regret it, but lest we forget Pavlik is upright and hittable. He can bang, has a big heart and is young and ambitious. But he's a big Middleweight, is he bigger or stronger than Kessler or hard to tag? no and no.

Calzaghe is arguably one of the few with the resolve to walk away unbeaten, but Pavlik in the Spring will be very tempting when he sees a bigger slice of the pie.

Meh, no big deal because Cal's only got one fight left - this should've happened after he beat Mario Veit first time around.

I think if this was just purely about having a bigger slice of the pie, JC would have done it years ago, I think there is more to it.

Maybe only now he could do it, due to contracts.

I cannot see Warren being too upset, he's not exactly got alot of a career left. Very odd that Joe was happy with Warren, who has had a history of not being close to arranging anything with Jones in the past, when RJJ was in his peak. Now past his prime, Joe leaves Frank (who looks like he can get Pavlik) to pursue RJJ.

Cue wrists etc saying "oh its just Stu showing his hate again" - but Warren has shouldered ALOT of the blame for Calzaghe's lack of decent opponents during his prime years... alot of people laid it on to naivity and loyality on Joe's behalf not to leave him. Why didn't this move happen when Joe was younger, and more significantly when Ottke, RJJ and Hopkins were younger.

I think its absurd to say its bordering on absurd. Pavlik's not exactly a household name. He's still got a lot more fighting to do. Fighting Jones is more iconic. Yes Jones is past his prime, but so is Joe, hence why we are talking about his final fight. There are only about three years between them. And as many have mentioned, fighting Jones still has its dangers. Contrary to what some think, Jones is clearly not a completely shot fighter - he's not as good, but still dangerous and has retained speed. So I think a fight with Jones is satifactory on two levels, firstly level of competition (though it is not as dangerous as fighting Pavlik) and secondly, due to the greater publicity it would draw. I also think Joe actually wants to fight Jones from a personal perspective, because of who Roy Jones is. So good for him I say.

As for splitting from Warren, he wants to generate a bigger percentage for himelf, and why not on his final fight against someone as iconic a Jones. I think it will be an amicable split.

You'd expect a promoter to make a significant amount of money from a fight like Jones-Calzaghe, with worldwide TV rights, huge gate receipts etc. So it's probably not welcome news.
