Calzaghe 'scared' of Pavlik power

Post by Chambers2 »

Welsh boxing hero Joe Calzaghe has been accused of running scared of big-hitting American Kelly Pavlik.

Super-middleweight king Calzaghe has ruled out a big-money showdown with fellow unbeaten star Pavlik, the WBO and WBC middleweight champion.

But Pavlik's trainer Jack Loew said: "How many more excuses is this guy going to make? If Joe Calzaghe fought Kelly, he'd be in trouble.

"There's no way he'd beat Kelly, he's just a slap-happy Welshman."

Pavlik has told 10-year champion Calzaghe he wants to "get it on" but the undisputed super-middleweight wants to fight ageing great Roy Jones Jnr.

Calzaghe's promoter allegedly is in negotiations with 39-year-old Jones's representatives for a prospective autumn clash.

The 36-year-old Welshman is currently big box office in the United States following his points win over Bernard the 'Executioner' Hopkins

But although Calzaghe insists he would beat Pavlik, the powerhouse from Ohio would be a risk to the Newbridge fighter's unbeaten record at this late stage in his career.

The legendary Jones is a four-weight world champion but is considered by many pundits as yesterday's news, with rising star Pavlik the promising new kid on the block.

Calzaghe's stablemate Gary Lockett, trained by Calzaghe's father Enzo, was demolished by Pavlik inside three rounds earlier this month, and Loew admitted: "Jones Jnr is a smarter fight for Calzaghe.

"This is what happened: his dad went back and said 'don't fight this killer, he is gonna knock you out'.

"I'm ticked off as he's telling us that we don't want to fight him. But yes, we do want to fight Joe Calzaghe. He doesn't want to fight Kelly Pavlik."
Pretty much what we've been saying (exc Max), Calzaghe is taking the easy option in going after RJJ, he doesn't like the look of KP's power IMO, which is a massive shame as it'd be a great fight and one that would improve his legacy no end as Pavlik is going to be a Megastar

It's the last bit that's funny.

Loew is saying we do want the fight. And he's making clear that Calzaghe saying that pavlik doesn't want it is a bit dodgy.

Calzaghe's taking harder punches from bigger punchers than Pavlik and shown he has a granite chin.

You can;t beat or be competitive with Joe on just power alone. Joe Isn't Gary Lockett.

Taylor couldn't even knock out light middleweights and had Pavlik on his arse, Pavlik's a KO waiting to happen. His only world class fights were against a negative champion and he shouldn't of got the win In the rematch either.

Putting Kelly Into the lions den already Is insane.

As for slapping, they do hurt the opponent. Just because they don't go down doesn't mean they don't sting, KD punches come with no flurries to keep them on their feet.

I'd favour Abraham over Pavlik due to the better chin and Sturm could play It safe and out jab Kelly.

The way I see this fight is:

@ 168 - Pavlik wins;
@ 175 - Cal wins.

Joe should only take the fight at 175, as it might be a step too far for Pavlik. At super-middle, Joe would be considerably weakened now, whereas Kelly would probably be even more of a monster than he already is. However, if Pavlik could beat Joe at lt. heavy, he could - in theory - simultaneously hold titles (of sorts) at 3 different weights.

And Lacy was going to be a megastar aswell until he got smashed to pieces by Joe. Pavlik is a good fighter but another unbeaten guy who after the fact would be easy to discredit.

Jones is a hall of fame cert while Pavlik at this point in time is not. Calzaghe/Jones is worth more money than Calzaghe/Pavlik and Jones has always been a guy Joe wanted to fight. At this point in time Calzaghe has more than earned the right to call the shots. Jack Loew should shut his trap, a bigmouth who got a good fighter, and has now gotten ideas above his station.

He would make more money with a Pavlik fight surly, the oppertunity cost value is less with RJJ though.

This Loew nugget needs to keep his trap shut, his man hasn't proven himself to be the best at 160 yet. Pavlik had a fortunate decision in his favour against Taylor in the rematch IMO and his only other fight since then was against a blown up light middle who had somehow been made mandatory challenger for the WBO.

I'm actually disappointed that Joe isn't taking this fight because it would be another comfortable victory for him over yet another overrated yank.

Who does Pavlik need to beat to be considered the best Middleweight?

That is one reason that he won't fight him cause it is a no win situation
If Pavlik is as good as the hype, Joe won't fight him
If Joe does a number on him he is another Jeff Lacy

Fortunate decsion?

Blown up Light Middle? Thats like calling DLH a Blown up Lightweight now. Its been YEARS since Lockett fought at Light Middle and he couldn't make the weight without starving himself on baby food for weeks before a fight.

I aint convinced about Pavlik, as I have noted - and I would like to see Pavlik fight maybe once or twice at SUPER Middleweight before championing it as a Super Fight with Joe (Kessler or Bute vs Pavlik would be ideal). However, I think you are going to the very extreme with that analysis.

Yeah, I agree - but then Jones isn't exactly a win win situation either.

I want to see Calzaghe vs Bute.

The decision in the rematch was not fortunate at all given that it was fairly close until Kelly swept the last three rounds.

And I fail to see how a boxer who came up the hard way (beating Zertuche and Miranda) to knocking out the number one man at middleweight and taking the titles is overrated.

Would you respect Pavlik more if he sat on the WBO title for a decade taking on fearsome opponents like Tocker Pudwill and Branco Sobot in Youngstown,Ohio?

Right before this turns into a slanging match let me say this.

I'm not one of these fans who believes all this "best in the world" "best british fighter of all time" nonsense which surrounds JC, I think his WBO reign was a joke to be honest. However I'm just not convinced Pavlik is this power punching monster people are saying he is, like I said there's still a major challenge at 160 for Pavlik in Arthur Abraham.

JC is making the wrong decision going after Jones who despite being a decade past his prime has a very good chance.

Okay, that's cool. I was just wondering if there might be anyone else, but it's good to know that you consider Pavlik and Abraham the top 2 Middleweights. I'm really looking forward to them getting in the ring together. It's a tough fight to call.
