Maxboxing.com

What do you get for your money?

Whats so good that you have to pay for it?

Is it just articles and news and is it worth it?

Cheers

Not sure, but I think they sometimes put up exclusive mini-documentary promo type films that you can download. There's one of them taking a visit to Hopkins in training before the Trinidad fight that you can get through eMule, which is around 12mb. Dunno if they do this often though. :-?

I do.

For $4.99 (about £3.50) a month, it's well worth it.

You get interviews with the top fighters sometimes, training videos, articles etc. It's worth it.

Yes I subscribe, mainly to read the stuff by Mike Katz who I like. He's a great writer but does tend to go over old ground a bit too often.

Kevin Iole is a decent writer as well, but for some reason his stories are the ones you have to pay for ( along with Katz ) while other writers who are just as good, Doug Fischer, Steve Kim and our own James McDonnell are free - which is odd.

Also the videos, which I don't often get around to watching.

Michael Katz is the big wheel there, he's the name journalist, and he's the one who brings the punters in.

Thanks for the props. I've actually had a lot of articles which are members only, they select the ones which get the most hits I think and make them members only after a while.

The other thing you get for membership is unlimited access to the archives, video footage.

I think it is worth the money myself, when you consider it's about £2.50 a month for up to date news, and it's of a higher presentation standard than a lot of it's competitors, and has a lot more writers too...

I guess the problem is that most people still expect internet sites to be free, so whilst I think it's worth the money, most people would rather get what they can for free than subscribe. As far as I am aware, max is the only boxing site which charges thus far.

I understand that boxing websites have to make money, but imo their selling out just like ppv tv. It's bulls**t, boxing is one of the only sports you have to pay for to get the best fights. Boxingtalk.net is gonna be a paysite soon, so they can f**k off as well.

To be honest IMO why pay when you can get it for free....I personally feel that the guys who write the articles on the free sites write decent enough articles and I already buy all the mags so really no need to pay for a website.

Is that all you bloody get? articles and a few video clips?

Anyway just wondered what was so good that you have to pay for it and the general consensus im getting from the four sites ive asked on is not bloody much!!

I've seen some of Katz's ringside scoring and i don't think i'll be paying to hear his views judging by them. Didn't he have Mosley winning against Wright? :o

I totally agree with you, Boxingtalk.net sounds like it's gonna be a lot better when it becomes a paysite, but I still won't pay to be a member. There gonna have live chats with Tarver, Hopkins etc plus all the training footage and interviews.

To be fair, Maxboxing has much higher costs than most, because of the amount of traffic they get, and the fact they have a lot of video clips

Maxboxing seems to me to be gravitating toward an on-line 'show' they had a delayed telecast of the Rahman fight the other day

It should be noted that of the boxing websites out there, very few if any are making a profit, and a lot run at a loss.

If people are going to the effort of providing a service of any kind, I don't think it is too much to ask for them to expect something back for it...in the end the economics of it will play out, hopefully boxing sites will get to broadcast fights, and poeple will finally be prepared to pay for their services.

If I take myself out of the equation, ( so as to avoid criticism for being pompous/biased), I would say that the standard of the writing on Maxboxing is pretty superior to say, Eastside boxing, with some notable exceptions.

One of the major reasons for this is that everyone on maxboxing (aside from me I hasten to add) is a bona-fide trained journalist, whereas on most other sites they are just inspired amateurs, I do think it makes a difference.

One thing for the paysites you dont get too many dodgy pop ups. Have you been on secondsout lately? Vegas Poker popups every time you click a link, had about 5 of the b@st@rds on my screen the other day.

Maxboxing writers are good, but I will never forget David Avila scoring the Wright-Mosley fight in favour of Mosley by two points. What an idiot.

Michael Katz apologised for his view of the fight (he scored it a draw) in his latest column, saying that he watched it again at home, and saw that some rounds he gave to Mosley were clearly Winky's rounds. He claimed things looked different live.

Could this be the problem with a lot of dodgy decisions? Except, when the judges go home, they can't change the result and make everything alright again.

Inspired amateurs may not be able to write as well as trained journalists, but they normally know more about boxing. Doghouseboxing.com is one of the better sites around, their articles are great. I think most of their writers are amateurs.

That's a fair point Southpaw, commentators and viewers can relax more when watching a fight because there opinions will not come under scrutiny at the end of the fight...maybe judges are watching so intensely they miss things that we can pick up on. Perhaps i have been a little too harsh on judges in the past? NAHHH

No matter where you were watching, live or on TV you cant possibly have scored for Mosley. He did next to nothing in most of the rounds!

Southpaw, well in that case you would have to detest me, the only fighting I did was at primary school in a boxing club run by an indian priest.

So let me get this right, anyone who has never fought, has no right to comment on the sport. That's ridiculous, most of the best sports writers are non-participants, and look what bloody awful commentators many fighters make.

That argument doesn't hold water, just because I haven't been a fighter doesn't mean i don't understand boxing or fighters mentalities, as long as you are observant and have an analytical mind, you can write about anything.

Most of the people at maxboxing I think were guilty of wanting to give Mosley rounds, both against DLH and Winky, there is a lot of respect, rightly so for Mosley, who doesn't play the political game and takes fights because he wants the fight, and not because it is the most money.

I have also noticed however that American writers in general seem to favour aggression and hard punching over jabbing and moving, and American judges too.

I think Oscar must be pretty sick that he didn't get the decision, and winky did, Winky's was more clear cut, but I think that Oscar still won by 2-3 clear rounds.

True they do but what's the excuse for Mosley? He wasn't doing either!

That's true, but Mosley wasn't even landing most of the time. Most of his swings were way off. Wright jabbed and moved but also stood his ground and fought I thought he could have got the KO if he'd gone toe to toe after 5 or 6 rounds. Mosley looked beaten in his corner after the 4th round I guess Wright didnt know that though.

Mosley needs a new trainer for starters, his dad just aint strong enough, Mosley needs a bott up his behind sometimes to kick him into action.

I have to say, and maybe I'm on my own here but I've tried to score fights from ringside a few times now and I don't know why but I find it a heck of a lot more difficult than scoring from television. And before anyone says it - it's got NOTHING to do with how any commentators might be seeing things.

Personally I think we'd get far less dodgy decisions (and we do get LOADS) if you sat each of the judges in a back room on their own with a tv.

I think Michael Katz is a bit of a throwback myself.

I don't believe that Writers are that much better at being impartial than judges are. It helps if you don't really support particular fighters

I think Mosley is finished at top flight, I think someone like Margarito or Mayorga has a shot at beating him, he doesn't throw enough shots any more, and is too musclebound.

Maybe he will get some zip back if he moves back down to 147, but perhaps all those amateur and pro bouts have taken their toll..

Mosley hasn't looked good to me since before the 1st Forrest fight, he didn't look good against DLH, and really missed the boat by not competing at light welter, where he could have really cleaned up in my opinion...
