Weights of Joey Torres vs. Perry Williams Bout

Post by Chuck1052 »

Does anybody know the weights of Joey Torres and Perry Williams when they fought at the Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim, California on April 27, 2002? Torres is listed as a light-heavyweight, but I recall that he was well
over 175 pounds when he fought Williams.

One website has him at 199. Williams may have been bad, but the flabby, heavily tatooed Torres was worse. The first right hand Williams threw sent Torres down face first, much to the surprise of both boxers. Torres barely beat the count, but instead of going after the hurt fighter, Williams put his gloves in front of his face. Williams barely threw a punch for the rest of the round before going down from a suspect left. The enraged crowd chanted "WWF, WWF" believing the fight was fixed when Torres won by a second round knockout.

199 sounds right for Torres' weight based on memory. Not sure about Perry Williams' weight although it was around the lt. heavy limit.

I haven't checked the record, but I hope you guys have this down as a fixed fight, because there's no doubt that it was.

I saw the Torres-Williams bout on KCAL, a
Los Angeles-based television station. My
recollections are as follows:

1. There was some time devoted to Torres' past
on the telecast just before the bout took place.

2. BEFORE the bout was to begin, Torres had tears
streaming down his face. In more than thirty years of
watching professional boxing, I had never seen a fighter
cry before a bout was to begin.

3. I couldn't believe that Torres weighed so much while being
only five feet, six inches tall.

4. Torres looked terrible during the bout. However, I am not
convinced that the bout was "fixed."

:o Even before the rumors came out regarding a fix, I thought it was a fix. I, too, saw it on KCAL and I'm really surprised anyone would think that was legitimate. I guess if you want more than hearsay, this Associated Press article will change your mind (straight from the horse's mouth, mind you):

There was an article on Joey Torres in the
January 21, 2004 Los Angeles Times. Yes,
there is some irregularities in regards
to his bout with Perry Williams. However,
consider the following:

1. According to several articles on Torres,
there are a number of people who consider
him a charming liar. In other words, one
shouldn't take his word that his bout with
Williams was fixed.

2. Why would anybody go to great lengths to
fix a bout involving Torres? After all, Torres
wasn't a goose who was laying the golden
eggs. Yes, he was put in with a stiff, but....

3. The California State Athletic Commission didn't
find any solid facts indicating that the bout was fixed.

4. Based what I know at this moment, I wouldn't vote
to convict anyone of an alleged fix in regards to Torres'
bout with Williams. Yes, I am suspicious, but.......
