Depends how conservative you are, I'd say - either you are in it for the glory or for the cash. I much prefer fighters who take risks, such as Haye, to those who treat it as just a job. It is, after all, an entertainment industry and the sort of conservatism you mention was exactly what was behind the intercontinental title era, which all but killed boxing. It has to be about more than setting the bar comfortably low enough to earn a crust or the public turns off

You know what, I might well do - I'm sick to death of Calzaghe's hypocrisy and preposterous claims, and I can't stand the way the guy fights. I've been kind enough to him.
And of course, he is Welsh, and you have a real problem with the Welsh....I knew it :TU:

To be fair the majority of us are fans but there is no argument over whether he is a hypocrite. You only have to read the extract from the book and compare it to this week's comments.

Getting a touch of Hatton about him, thinks only the thickos are listening, not people who actually know a bit about the sport.

In fan terms we all want Hagler v Hearns on a regular basis, and agree Haye was a wonderful attitude which makes him the most exciting fighter we have
Taking it from the other side I completely understand the majority of fighters prioritise finances and health before entertaining Joe public.
I agree that a balance needs to be found because fans will turn off and mickey mouse titles have eroded our sport.
Finding the balance isn't easy and will be hard to regulate

Sorry, and I know alot of blokes will be "unsurprised" at this... but I will have to go against my countryman and be cheering on RJJ on this.

No, I aint Anti Calzaghe - but can you just imagine the praise he'll get in Wales and adulation. Yes, he deserves alot... but alot of the Welsh press and people in the street will not appreciate just how past his prime RJJ is. Joe's had it after beating Hopkins, it will be magnified 10x if he beats Jones. Cause more people have heard of him and more people have heard snippets that he is a league above Joe (experts views) and plus he is younger than Hopkins.

Calzaghe wins it means he is always better than RJJ amongst the Welsh lay fans.....and boxing is the one sport for me in which nationality means nothing. I just want to see the best man win... and while Joe will probably win, he will never be the better man. Could you imagine Joe fighting at Heavyweight against Ruiz? I got laughed at on another forum for suggestion Joe vs Toney if Toney beat Ruiz. Lets not forget, its Jones who started as the Middleweight, not Joe.

As a proud Welshman I have to agree with a lot of this. I get fed-up of hearing thick Taff pudenda argue with me in the pub when Calzaghe is on. The Kessler fight is a case in point.

Kessler was having success in one round and I said what I think JC should do and one guy was close to starting on me because I dared to give constructive criticism. I showed him though, I gave him a Cymru Twist.......bit like a Chinese Burn, only I pull a funny face and shout "Dwi'n Hoffi Hufen Ia"...... :)

They're tossers. And I'm sure Stu will agree that a lot of our rugby fans are the same. They only support our union side in Feb and March but wouldn't have a clue who any of them are and have never seen another game in their fornicating lives. Wankers......

They make me cringe.

Obviously there is a big grey area - and I should point out I am not talking about the Peter Buckleys of this world. But it really gets up my nose when the likes of Calzaghe do very little of any note for most of their career then seem to believe everyone should pay into their retirement funds, when they want to fight ancient legends and act as though they're taking on the real thing, when the undeniable fact is that had he not been so conservative early on and for so long, their retirement funds might have been full to the brim anyway. IMO they owe the fans, the fans do not owe them.

Joe will always be a rung below De La Hoya, Mayweather and Roy, it does not matter what he does now.

They are the three best fighters of the last 10 years, closely followed by Lennox.

Joe is a B+, they are A*.....and I'm a fan of Joe.

Joe Calzaghe is about to conclude the perfect FW career.

Joe is unblemished, wealthy, unbeaten and largely untested.

Its a hell of a play if you can make it.

A rugby fan from North Wales :o Now thats an entirely different debate (only J/K) I propose that the North should have had a region. Alot of my friends are ex Rugby players so I don't really experience those problems.... but when I get shouted at by some woman for being noisy and shouting at the screen in the pub, then that does annoy. Alot of non-fans who come out all kitted out for two months a year do not understand how much the game means to people who follow it week in week out. Although I don't support a side necessarily, I watch every televised match to look out for form players. I do have one mate who doesn't watch alot of rugby but clearly has alot of internet access and will spout of some stats that he has found which does grate (like he was pro the selection of Gavin Thomas!!!!).... but other than that our little gang know a bit about the sport.

My boxing experiences though are different...... people proclaim their are experts just on the basis of watching a few seconds of one fight. A problem with the Welsh is that they have good memories.... remember when Eastman was doing those ads in Boxing Monthly calling out Hopkins (and I think he did one with Calzaghe).... well me friends remembered me saying that there is a British fighter called Eastman who wants to fight Calzaghe - they turned it around by saying thinking I meant that Eastman would beat Joe (I have never thought that) and Hopkins anhilated this Eastman not so long ago so he is not passed his prime.

The amount of discredit B Hop has had in Wales is rediclous...... I've managed to persuade them that he was a different fighter in 2001 and they agree this fight was close - but who would win a prime vs prime fight... Calzaghe EASY!!!! Why? Cause Hopkins is a moaning B'stard who faked a low blow cause he couldn't take Joe's power!!! I've given up.

Have you lost your sense of humour again Glyn?

I was responding to a Welsh poster whose post was largely about being Welsh and the Welsh reaction to a Welsh fighter. It's the first time I've done it at length and I make no apologies for it.

What was irrational about it, most of it was fornicating tongue in cheek!

You really do come across as worthy IMO, I look forward to the big anti-Calzaghe piece that you've promised.

Joe doesn't make the top of fighters of the last 15 years IMO. Well I argued this on a non boxing forum and people were going wild about my Calzaghe hatred - untill I named the fighters, and they conceeded that I had a point.

Sorry chaps, got a smattering of Welsh pride meself and don't get off on the underdog thing, which definitely does rear its ugly head plenty often on here. Find it parochial and unnecessary in this day and age, like when Lenny Henry used to make jokes about being black ... Why? Anyways, fcuk nationalities, this isn't the Balkans, let's get back on topic eh?

Plenty to criticise in Joe's career, but you can't really say he was never tested. Lacy and Kessler were 50/50 going in, and getting off the canvas to blast out Mitchell was brilliant stuff.
