It is a good undercard, so at least they have made an effort to put on a good night of boxing. I'll head to the pub.

JSA wrote:Always been a Fenech fan(despite much egotistical nonsense) and my view on a few points;
1)never hheard Fenech make any excuses for Grove loss. Watching that fight was painfull. Just did not seem like Jeff.Perhpas Grove was a better boxer than i gave him credit for. Jeff just didnt seem Jeff. What he tried just didnt work like he used to.Seemed shot to me.
2)never short of an excuse?Only ever heard much about loss to Nelson. Think arrogance and a FARKIN good and naturally bigger opponent got the better of him(not to mention Jeffs style eventually being his downfall as i figured it always would once he got up to a certain weight).
As for before that-reckon some of the most chalky and farked up hands ever where not an excuse-just a reality.
3)am disappointed with Jeffs banter about Green(and to a lesser extent Mundine even). Come on Jeff.Youve got the limelight again. Dont be a total tool. The records getting boring. Not good for aussie boxing.Wasnt Dannys fault his opponent ran in the title fight.
4)i think this will actually be a WAR while it lasts. Reckon Fenech has thought about that 1st loss every day since. And Nelson is a proud man.Instincts never die. Wonder if Fenech will be too desperate and if so ,assuming Nelson still has any power left, it could be goodnight Jeff.
5) I will be watching. cant wait for it AND to see Kickett. Hats off to that lad.

Solid post - Agree with much of it -

And fact is, I to, believe this will be a decent scrap while it lasts - No one is saying these guys are suppose to fight for a title - They are simply maning up Vs one another again........To settle their score - Being 1 & 1 Vs each other (regardles of that ridiculous draw verdict). Too bad this didn't happen 6 months after their 2nd fight (a la, Vasquez Vs Marquez).....

But, I'll be watching....and I think old Fenech has more left than old Azumah..... Fenech by TKO

To all the so-called boxing academics suggesting superior boxing knowledge and passion for the old game.. Its nothing more than a disgrace that 2 combatents who left the scene with a piece of nostalgia intact, would embarass themselves with the indignity of another rematch in the later years.. the "game' is turning full circle, and the future is bleek, as it was in the twilight of the 'prize ring era'.. Fenech had never impressed Bill Mordey with his fistic attributes during the demolition of champions, who we hold in the highest esteem..Satoshi Shiniaki, Samart Payakarun and Victor Callajus.. excuse my humor, but they were all below the highest of standards, or the sort of boxers who inspire adulation.... It would be sufficient to say that FENECH would have busted his feeble knuckle on the head of Barry Michael, before succumbing to the body puching onslaught Barry would provide, and If the oportunity arose, Lester Ellis would have sent Fenech to bed in a body bag.. Both, Ellis and Michael would have destroyed to sooky little wog that 'we' hold as our greatest fighter.. Sadly, in this day and age, its easier to avoid a great potential event.. as fenech did during his career.. I openly state that both Ellis and Michael would have been amazing drawcards, and champions if the timing had of been as it was in the 30s-70s... During the time that legitimate fighters where appreciated..

Utter nonsence, Micheals and Ellis were good fighters but Fenech was superior to both. You can pick apart anyones record no matter how good if you really want to. You may not think highly of the 3 fighters he won titles off but what about his draw in Vegas against Nelson that everyone that watched says he won. Ellis and Micheal both couldnt even be competitive with Nelson never mind beat him.

Only half wits analise a simple record, as it usualyy shows a simple result...... how would FEnech have done aginst the punching ability of Al 'earthquakje' Carter or the simple determination of Frank Ropis????? RodSequenin was a massive puncher and absorbed all that Lester could throw.. for 15 rounds....I believe that Dale Artango would have belted Fenech also... yet... poor little jeff was too bust fighting Philipino taxi drivers, to gain a record of sorts.. plus he was a juice head who never would have been able to compete with a humble weight loss regeim.. as he always broke out in pimples and flus during training... He hasa nothing on any formidable oponent, and he never did... Nelson had suffered from a Virus for 6 months prior to being exposed to the heat in 'Vegas".. yet he was totally in control of 40% of the fight... How did it go in Princess Park?? was Nelson sick?? was Fenech sick?? grow up ya wanker..

Jeez fella, take it easy :D

The fact is, Fenech achieved more than Barry or Lester ever did. Ellis could have been anything but for whatever reasons he never fulfilled his potential. Barry went a great way to keeping the sport alive here in the early 80's but he was a somewhat limited fighter by world standards

I will have to respond yet agian.... Barry Michael faught some amazingly durable oponents from overseas..... albeit, british, Scottish or American... the last being Rocky Lockeridge.. who managed to take Barry Michaels IBF Junior Lightweight crown... Barry suffered one hell of a beating, yet, as throughout his whole career, he couldnt be floored.... and that will remain a testament to his ability, durability, ring craft, inferior strenghts, dignity in the face of adversity..forever. Through his willingless to face the likes of harder men for years, to fight anyone, anywhere, and for minimal return... even the offers posted to the FENECH camp, which remain dispondant, and undignified, they were offered... yet, suggest the open tuths about the two fighters. I do, in the knowledge of the sport, have very little regard for the 'champs' that Fenech faught.... and .. yes, a title is a title..... but thruogh a long term interest in the sport.... having been deeply involved in numerous facets, gathering facts, understandings, interpretations and experiences... I will keep my opinions the same.. as they will not be swayed due to somone feeling pity for Fenechs single dissapointment in "vegas'.. Yes, he was robbed there... but, Nelson was not fit.. C`est la vie... Buster Douglas should not have beaten Tyson... Frazier should not have beaten Ali.... Ali should not have beaten Foreman..... But the timing of the sport, the physcical nature and the events that transpire bring out the weakness and strengths of the boxers.............

You seem to know some about the sport but hating on Fenech is stupid, Whether you like him or not he wouldnt have lost to the likes of Nanjib Daho or Billy Moeller or Jimmy Brown or Nene Jun. Its easy to pick apart peoples records if you want to be a dick and every single fighter in history can have there records broken down and made look bad.

At the end of the day Micheal and ellis were good fighters but there not going to get the recignition that Fenech has and they dont deserve to.

Good post. I am a huge fan of all 3. When all is said and done, history will show Fenech as a multiple world champ and the other two following behind him as far as Aussie boxing greats go. I respect your opinion and a match up between Michael and Fenech in their prime would have been great. I can't help but think, as we are being hypothetical here, that a fully fit Fenech, with good hands (I know I am asking for a lot now) would have beaten both Ellis and Michael.

Guys... I love the battle of wits, opinions and responses.... I am not Barry Michael, yet I have been fortunate to share many experiences with the man... I am not a disgruntled Fenech fan who was refused an autograph, as I have been in his presence numerous times.. and have countless items which jeff has happily signed to me... If you wish to know a simple fact, Barry Michael had Fenech agree verbally to a fight over the phone on one occassion.. it was totally agreed upon that they will fight, yet Barry suggested that fenech would bust his hands on Barry`s head.... No further talks regarding the proposed fight eventuated... Fenech realised the fact, and politely left the talks alone.. I believe I have a fair understanding of the game, and rarely pick the outcome of a match incorrectly... I bet with my brains, not my heart.. thus, keeping an open mind... Call me egotistic if you wish, Im just stubborn and passionate about the game, and my knowledge of it..and hold my opinions tightly fixed.. I will always accept that Fenech won 4 world titles, not recieving the decision in the forth... yet, it wasnt a one sided affair. I spent hours chatting to Phillip Holiday, Mike Juarez and Calvin Grove personally, before they faught Fenech... even drove Mike Juarez and Midge Minor to the press conference.... Both Holiday and Grove suggested that a right hand would be the only requirement to stop Fenech... the proved themselves right.. as fenech was never a great match with an orthodox distance puncher... great match ups make for a great fight...think about it??? Keep chatting and responding, this is a great deal of fun... I wish to continue. Thanks for ya time.

each to their own opinion i guess but do think prime fenech beats prime ellis/BM anyday. I do not pretend to be some boxing academic as you patronisingly suggest some here are and nor am i a racist so be he a "wog" or not he fought proudly under the flag of this country.I think Fenech got enough international recognition to suggest he was pretty damn good and not just an overblown media figure that coz he was champ we all embraced (to calm our insecurities).Have no qualm in suggesting that a HUGE ego got the better of him as well as some good opponents as well as going up multiple divisions and having perhaps some of the worst hands in boxing history(ever seen the xrays). to fight on with such rooted hands is amazing.adrenaline anaesthetic or not was amazing.

anyway with regards to the three of them-at least they all always came to fight and were good to watch. :box: :box: :box:
