It was pretty dire, though I had DLH edging it.

....and if it were to happen again (which I hope it doesn't) I'd go for DLH by TKO.

It would be an absolutely typical GBP match, all about name value at the expense of real boxing. IMO they are raping the sport with their celebrity circuit and I've yet to see what they are giving back.

I can't see it happening. I'd be surprised if Trinidad could even make 160 now and we know DLH isn't really effective above 154.

Yes, I will be very interested the day DLH, Hopkins, Winky, Barrera and Mosley do pack it in for good - what going to happen then.

But I aint complaining about the two big fights of 2007..... might have had name value, but they were massive 50:50 (ish) fights. Fights like that were just what the sport wanted.

Delahoya should let the rematch be at 170 if Trinidad doesn't want to come down. HE can come in at 160-162 which is around his fight night weight and Trinidad will come in fat and lose

I have a feeling Mayweather may come out of retirement if Delahoya comes back and offers purse parity

GBP also promoted or co-promoted (with Top Rank) MAB-JMM, MAB-Pac ll and Mosley-Cotto in 2007.

GBP probably the reason Calzaghe hasn't re-signed with allegedly. Probably looked at how DLH and BHOP raking it in and thought 'if these boys can do it no reason why I can't!'

Interesting times for boxing over next couple of years with boxers taking things out of promoters/managers' hands.

Penny for Mr Warren's thoughts on things at the moment.

Difference is though - DLH is the biggest star in world boxing and formed GBP promotions well before his final fight - and his mates happen to be the other biggest stars in the sport.

Calzaghe's mates are Maccrinelli (exposed), Lockett (exposed), Ress (exposed) and Pryce.... hardly great bargining tools to TV companies.

And with Hatton and Haye doing it on their own, and Khan sounds like he has signed with Warren - who can Calzaghe sign.

Sure he'll make a mint for the RJJ fight, but he could lose it all if he continues promoting beyond that fight (which some people think could still happen to GBP). If Sugar Ray Leonard with his charsima, intelligence, and worldy contacts couldn't hack it - then not sure who could.

My point exactly about GBP - they jump on other people's shows and claim them as their own. For instance, Schaefer claiming in this month's BM that GBP would be staging events like Hatton-Lazcano all over the world - GBP had nothing to do with that event being the success it was, nor can they claim much involvement in Hatton-Mayweather, which happened at Floyd's instigation and was sold by Floyd. Even De La Hoya-Mayweather was sold more by Floyd, who came up with the 24/7 idea. Realise, GBP are just a front for HBO. They can attach themselves to any event or successful fighter by virtue of HBO's funding, indirect or otherwise, of GBP. Everyone wants to be on HBO, by far the biggest payers in boxing, but to do so these days you need to be attached to GBP. And what fighters have they ever created? All they do is make celebrity fights between veteran names from different weight divisions and go around taking other promoter's fighters, and jumping other promoters' trains. They are a dangerous parasite. The will suck the sport dry and show no signs of leaving it with anything positive. Where are the GBP fighters coming through? If they showed any sign or intention of creating something for the future of boxing I would change my opinion, but they don't - they are all about money and me me me. Everything that's wrong with boxing and the world, as one respected writer said to me recently.

I prefer to watch the fights that Showtime put on. The whole idea of "great fights, no rights." It's just better entertainment. But even when Showtime do something good, HBO end up taking the cream. HBO pay more than fights are worth, Showtime pay ppl less to go through the meat grinder in 50-50 contests.

re the closeness of broadcaster/promoter with GBP and HBO. Aren't there any anti-trust laws that can prevent things like this happening? This upcoming long term deal between GBP and HBO looks really ominous - they won't have to even put on impressive fights, just grab all the big stars, most of whom we gravitate to GBP/HBO. Not right that HBO are telling Roy Jones to get help from GBP to promote Calzaghe-Jones, if this is true.

They have caused havoc before, with Mosley wining and dining Corrales to jump ship from Gary Shaw and creating an ugly little tug of war over Chico before he had that Clottey fight.

I also never liked the idea of Oscar buying out Ring. He's promoting Ring mag title fights at lightweight, and acting like the other champs like Campbell don't even exist. He controls the belt, because Ring Mag don't insist on mandatories, and it will be hard for fighters from different promoters to fight for the belt. Of course, he CAN put excellent fights on: Casa-Katsidis already, Casa-Marquez upcoming, as well as Katsidis-Chavez and Juan Diaz v the Casa-Marquez winner perhaps.

Agree Barn. Showtimne also tend to put more onus on showcasing new and exciting talent, especially with ShoBox. HBO have nicked this idea lately with the Lang/Gamboa/Angulo card.

Totally agree with comments here. GBP are great at promoting name fighters but pony at establishing stars. From what I've heard they've ruined Juarez to build up older fighters like Barrera and Marquez. Don't even get me started on the Santa Cruz debackle!!

Plus HBO have suddenly started touting the RING belt as a legitimate world title. Coincidence?!

Have to say, I've really enjoyed GBP's rivalry with Top Rank after the Pacquiao agreement. A number of good fights happened from this, that may not have happened otherwise.

You think that's a good thing though? At least with the alphabets they don't allow one Promoter to have a monopoly on the belt like GBP have done recently with the 135 title.

I take your point, Glyn. Quite disturbing really. Just don't let GBP buy out BM.... unless they make you an offer you can't refuse!

It would have to be one of those offers Chesh cos I'm not ready to call it a day yet and there's no way I could work for them like the Ring do - and don't get me started on THAT!

It's clearly a bad thing, I imagine those ratings will be constantly manipulated, GBP fighters will start appearing at #1 and #2 in the ratings, despite having never fought at the weight, with the vacant belt on the line!
And GBP can claim it has nothing to do with them as it is the bible of bxings doing!

Anyone think this is why they keep trying to get Chris John to bring his WBA featherweight belt to fight Rocky Juarez? So they can have the Ring belt at featherweight, as well as at lightweight? GBP have Linares, who should make his way up the rankings if he stays busy and looks good. Before you know it John and Linares will be #1 and #2 and can square off for the vacant Ring belt. Would be a great fight, just what the division needs, but then you move toward monopoly again.

Must be so tempting for fighters to sign with GBP in divisions like those. I think boxing needs guys like Nate Campbell to speak out and say, look, this is bullshit.

GBP can and will make excellent lightweight bouts, but you have to feel for guys like Romanov who have little following and will end up gunning for some WBA "regular" title under the radar, while Casa, Marquez, Diaz, Katsidis, Chavez etc will get all the $$ fights & all the big TV dates!

And they've just signed Prawat Singwatshisname. :o Schaefer will have the rename the division the GBP Lightweight division soon!

I'm still waiting for John to fight someone with a pulse in the US. That said, I think he just beat Marquez. Just.
