How good was Jack Doyle?

Post by ebeneezer »

Doyle was an heavyweight contender who fought in the 1930s. Apparently he was huge puncher with an amatuer record of 28-0 with 27 KOs and challenged for the British heavyweight title at the age of 19.

Does anyone have any info on how good he actually or an overview of his carrer?

^^^Is this the man you are referring to?

Seems to me he was all size and brawn, but little else, failing to defeat men who were of a higher caliber or more nearer to his size, as he got knocked out in a single round to fellow giant Buddy Baer. His greatest victory it seems was a 12 round decision over Kingfish Levinsky, who if you all recall was the man who fought virtually every name opponent of his time. I'd say he was like the modern equivilant of another fellow countryman from the Isle of Innisfree Kevin McBride.

Come on, he was a little better than punching bag McBride, but I agree he was nothing more than a hyped bust.

I've seen his fight vs Baer (who I believe was only 20 years old), in which he looked fairly hapless. If I recall Baer landed a monster left hook and Doyle never survived.

Jack could certainly punch, and was a huge draw - unbelievable, in fact. The guy had looks and charisma and charm and a serious drink problem.
His story is a fascinating one.

His (ex-)wife would go on to marry Marlon Brando.

Doyle was one of those "head-case" heavyweights that give trainers nightmares. Loads of natural gifts but the discipline of a five-year old. Plenty of them around today too.
