Luis Firpo must be the winner due the time Jack Dempsey was out of the ring (more than 10")

Re: Jack Dempsey Vs Luis Firpo 1923
Voted the greatest fight of the first half of the century...while it was every bit as exciting, if not more so, than Dempsey-Willard, I cant really give Dempsey major props over it, considering (if the truth be told here) Kearns only brought in Firpo because he was big and since nobody knew much about him, they figured he would be an easy push over for Dempsey...unfortunately for Jack he almost lost his title to a young man who had tons of power and a fire under his ass.
Re: Jack Dempsey Vs Luis Firpo 1923
I was always amazed that the short hooks and uppercuts Dempsey threw in that fight only traveled a few inches but yet were hurting and dropping Firpo everytime.
Amazing power.

shorter the hooks, faster they are...
velocity= power ?
velocity= power ?
Re: Jack Dempsey Vs Luis Firpo 1923
It wasnt Kearns who brought Firpo over it was Rickard but yes Rickard basically promoted Firpo to the title shot and purposely built him up to create interest in a Dempsey fight while deflecting interest from some of Dempsey's more logical challengers. Rickard tried this again with Quintin Romero Rojas a couple of years later but Rojas was less successful so that interest never really materialized.

You should study up on TEX RICKARD.HomicideHenry wrote:Voted the greatest fight of the first half of the century...while it was every bit as exciting, if not more so, than Dempsey-Willard, I cant really give Dempsey major props over it, considering (if the truth be told here) Kearns only brought in Firpo because he was big and since nobody knew much about him, they figured he would be an easy push over for Dempsey...unfortunately for Jack he almost lost his title to a young man who had tons of power and a fire under his ass.

If you are knocked out of the ring, you are allowed 20 seconds to get back in.Martin Sosa Cameron wrote:Luis Firpo must be the winner due the time Jack Dempsey was out of the ring (more than 10")
Re: Jack Dempsey Vs Luis Firpo 1923
is that true ?
Re: Jack Dempsey Vs Luis Firpo 1923
Depends on the jurisdiction the fight takes place in, the interpretation of the agreed upon rules, and how popular the defending champion is....

Re: Jack Dempsey Vs Luis Firpo 1923
The 20 second rule doesn't feature in either the Queensbury Rules or the London Prize Ring Rules but seems to have sneaked in the back door somewhere down the line.
Perhaps someone will know when this was?

In any event, you are supposed to climb back into the ring "unassisted." According to the June 1945 The Ring magazine: "Several newspaper men threw up their hands and checked Dempsey’s fall. They pushed him back into the ring, while the referee and the knockdown timekeeper were counting."

Both boys were greats, and both KO'ed Willard: it isn't easy. Firpo was a giant in weight and height. In that moments, Firpo don't wants the fight against Dempsey immediately: "I'm not ready for this rival, I need to wait and to learn one or two years more", he said

Dear friends,
please, see this excellent record of the first man who knocked out Luis Firpo, the great Light Heavyweight Champion of South America, Angel Rodriguez (49-1-0 in 50; KO's 44), from Uruguay, in this address

49 wins in 50 fights. 44 KO's.
KO'd a young Luis Firpo in the first round. (1918)
Fought in his native Uraguay, and in Chile, Argentina
but never in the US.
What else can you tell us about him?

Re: Jack Dempsey Vs Luis Firpo 1923
In Firpo's defense, that was very early in his career. Officially, it was his first pro fight after a no-contest in his pro debut.
I was wondering if Martin Sosa Cameron or anyone else would know if Firpo had any previous "unoffficial" fights that haven't been recorded? It seems possible since Firpo was already 23 when he fought Angel Rodriguez.
(Though even so, it's a safe bet that Firpo was pretty inexperienced when he fought Rodriguez).

Re: Jack Dempsey Vs Luis Firpo 1923
Dempsey was a far better fighter than Firpo who was dangerous.
I've argued this ebfore but had jack been counted out then with his connections I'm sure he'd have got a rematch and ebcome the 1st HW to re-gain the title, more than likely raising his stock higher.

Re: Jack Dempsey Vs Luis Firpo 1923
I don't think losing the title by knockout to Firpo and regaining it would help Dempsey's rating much. Firpo seems less accomplished than some of Dempsey's other contemporaries and a knockout loss in a fighters prime does not seem likely to help their legacy. Moreover, had Dempsey lost to Firpo it might greatly strengthen the argument of skeptics that he would have been likely to lose to Greb and Wills had he fought them.
