Nigel Benn Vs Michael Nunn, who wins?

Post by KOJOE90 »

At Super-Middleweight

This fight was talked about in the early/mid 1990's but it remained just talk.

Nigel would obviously be the aggressor in this match-up and have the power advantage he also had bags of heart and determination. Would this be enough to overcome Nunns counter puching southpaw style?

I assume that Nigel would chase Nunn all around the ring, attacking the body to take away Nunns legs and try and trap Nunn on the ropes to unload his heavy bombs.

Could Benn do this and force a late stoppage? Or would Nunns chin hold up to Benns best shots and then counter punch Benn silly after Benns intital onslaught?

Benn could and was hurt a number of times in his career, but this is when he was at his most dangerous, Benn almost seemed to like getting hurt and wobbled at times!

I think Benn at his very, very best might just have the fire and determination to punch and bully his way to a point win, but with Benns chin, Nunn could land that fight winning punch at anytime.

Any opinion fight fans? 8)

Nunn was a brilliant fighter at his peak, and absolute nightmare to face. Fast hands and feet, hard to hit and with a decent punch himself, when he stopped moving for long enough.
Even a sub-par Nunn made Toney look an ordinary fighter for 10 rounds, until Lightsout hit the jackpot.

I imagine he'd counter punch a frustrated Benn to defeat in around 10 rounds.

I don't see Nigel Benn been able to beat a peak Nunn.

The worst type of fighter Benn would have wanted to fight.
Nunn wins points.

Fair point mate, but that's why I made the fight at Super-Middle. I always felt that Nunn wasn't quite the same fighter at 168lbs. Benn on the otherhand at 168lbs was a more intelligent and seasoned fighter at 168lbs than he was at 160lbs.

Which I felt made the match-up more interesting.

Benn would have an excellent chance to beat the super-middle Nunn.

Although Benn was more experienced and seasoned at Super Middle I don't think he carried the explosive power and sharpness that he did at Middle.

Yeah Jim Watt was egging the idiots in the crowd on, and Reg Gutteridge was busy screaming "he's quitting" at Gman who put in one of the bravest performances of brutalising punches i ever seen.

In answer to the question, benn wasnt at his peak in early-mid 1990 but was a fast improving and exciting fighter. Nunn was at his peak, and Nunn would stop benn in around 8 in a similar fight to the roldan one.

Yep, fairly easy win to Nunn. Too slick. At the time there was talk of a matchup and I don't think many people truly thought Benn would have had much of a chance of winning

The fight was talked about in '87-88!

At super-middle it's harder to gauge, Nunn wasn't at his best and Benn changed his style.

It wasnt mentioned in 87.
It came up in late 88 as Benn was a red hot knockout prospect in the UK .

Nunn attended the Watson-Benn fight in early 89 as Benns bubble burst the first time he came up against a technical defensively adept boxer.

That version of Benn would have been knocked out in 4 by Nunn at his 88-89 peak.

However Benn came to the usa immediately after his loss and within 10 months he was a totally different boxer, he had developed stamina, good lateral movement , boxing ability and pounded out some very good wins over sanderline williams, amparo and jose quinones.
That improving been had reached his peak by 1993-95 when the NUNN fight was contractually tied in for the winner of the benn-eubanks rematch along with don king as a promoter, which in the end didnt happen as it was a draw!!!! . In fact Nigel accused Don King
of sending gerald mclellan over to "bash him up" in revenge for his not fighting Nunn.
Eubanks admitted he didnt want to fight a "world class 6ft 2 southpaw like nunn unless the money was exceptional".

I think eubanks at his best could have taken nunn and the 94-95 Benn as well but the 1980's benn? forget it

At 168, it would be hard to pick. At 160, Nunn was a much better fighter and would have handled him. I think a lot of people forget how slick Nunn was.
