Buncie had it dead right Joe cortez should never ref another fight he has totaly lost the plot,
to say he had no option but to dq soto after speaking to just about everybody at ring side was laughable if he had no choice what took him so long with lorenzo streached out on the deck for at least 5mins although lorenzo milked it for all it was worth the punch to the back of the head was only a glancing blow

Don't mean to be difficult but couldn't you have posted a more informative thread title for this than 'buncie'?????
Re: buncie
Yeah, I enjoyed Buncie's commentary last night - his jokes were funny this time and he was correct about Cortez - time to go Joe.
Only thing I really disagreed with him on was this "no-one makes David Diaz look ordinary" - sorry, but the ordinary Santa Cruz made Diaz look ordinary for the most part... a shot Eric Morales made Diaz look ordinary.

Re: buncie
more ridiculous hyperbole from the lovable pundit :(
Re: buncie
Couldn't agree more with Buncey. Joe Cortez couldn't have got that fight more wrong if he tried. I hope Sulaiman rips him a new ass hole.
On a side note, watched a documentary on Don King with Cortez in and his Nevada gym has collages of DLH and Trinidad on the wall (along with Tyson, Ali and Frazier). How can a ref be allowed to referee for these fighters when he has them on his wall?!!

Well I am sure Football referees support a team, but that shouldn't influence their decision.Emerson Poncey Name Ghent wrote: On a side note, watched a documentary on Don King with Cortez in and his Nevada gym has collages of DLH and Trinidad on the wall (along with Tyson, Ali and Frazier). Re: buncie
I agree stu. But do they have a collage of their team painted on to their wall?
Re: buncie
It's a gym FFS what sort would it be without old fight posters on the walls I have never been in a boxing gym that did not have them, for the visiting fan they have an interest. anyway cortez will have plenty of time to redecorate once he gets the elbow from the Nevada boxing gang
Re: buncie
They aren't fight posters. They're hand painted pictures of the fighters I've mentioned with a desert landscape behind them and lights. More like a shrine.telboy66 wrote:It's a gym FFS what sort would it be without old fight posters on the walls I have never been in a boxing gym that did not have them, for the visiting fan they have an interest. anyway cortez will have plenty of time to redecorate once he gets the elbow from the Nevada boxing gang
Re: buncie
They aint allowed to ref temas they "support". Afriend of a friends brother form anglesey has been accepted to linesman premier league games next season, something scholes I think his name is. he isnt allowed to do any Man U games.stujones wrote:Well I am sure Football referees support a team, but that shouldn't influence their decision.Emerson Poncey Name Ghent wrote: On a side note, watched a documentary on Don King with Cortez in and his Nevada gym has collages of DLH and Trinidad on the wall (along with Tyson, Ali and Frazier). Re: buncie
I couldn't agree more with him about Cortez but then I drop my opinion of Buncie again when he waffles on about Khan taking on Diaz (who he called shot). Listen Bunce, mate, if Khan and Fwank Warren didn't go down the WBC route first and challenge Diaz then why's he going to be put him in with Diaz when he has no belt? He isn't, so please, tell us something we don't know.
Re: buncie
The hypocrisy he showed towards Mayweather and Hopkins was unbelievable as well. He's stomps his mark on the fight in the very first round by ripping Hatton away from clinches and lets Hopkins get away with opposite. If I was a critical man then I would say he's favouring the American lads. He's a complete joke.

Yeah that was one thing that stood out for me too, and it wasn't really debated much afterwardsDioufy wrote:The hypocrisy he showed towards Mayweather and Hopkins was unbelievable as well. It kinda paints Cortez in a bad light.
Re: buncie
Yeah Terry, was rediculous - I honestly thought we might see him lose consciousness while Cortez and his pals were having a discussion.
To be fair to Cortez though, I think he's just got old - I used to think very highly of him as a ref.

Re: buncie
I still don't see the problem, there are still plenty of fight gyms with boxing artwork and its not like he said "these are my favourite fighters" - he might have just been a fan of the pictures.Emerson Poncey Name Ghent wrote: They aren't fight posters. And besides he had Trinidad and DLH there, two rival boxers.
Re: buncie
Sure, but the gyms aren't run by people who are supposed to be inpartial. As Wales mentioned; referees aren't allowed to officiate for games with their team in. I see no difference here.stujones wrote:I still don't see the problem, there are still plenty of fight gyms with boxing artwork and its not like he said "these are my favourite fighters" - he might have just been a fan of the pictures.Emerson Poncey Name Ghent wrote: They aren't fight posters. Also, highlights before the Pacman fight showed his first fight with Marquez. On the third knockdown he lands a punch on Marquez (harder than Soto threw) when Marquez was on the ground. Who was the referee for the fight I hear you ask?! Joe Cortez. Go to around 2.40 and see what you think:

Re: buncie
Soto was half way through his punch when Lorenzo went down (of his own vilition as well) - I don't see how he could avoid hitting him. Lorenzo also made more of it, he knew that fight would've been stopped and he would've lost so he played on it. I want Soto to beat his arse down in the rematch - it's a freaking man's sport you donkey.

Re: buncie
Joe Cortez claims he's 'firm but fair'..... obviously his dictionary has a different definition of those words than mine does.
He ruined Hatton-Mayweather as a fight and spectacle, was terrible in Hopkins - Calzaghe and now this latest farce.
I would suggest that the only part of him that is 'firm' is his fvcking wallet with all the backhanders he's got...

Re: buncie
Aint disputing that he isn't past it now. I don't think Manny should have got DQ'd and I don't think Soto (definately) should have got DQ'd. I just think he has got old, not bias. The reason why he thought from his angle it was a solid shot, was because he was in the wrong angle - due to age.Emerson Poncey Name Ghent wrote:Sure, but the gyms aren't run by people who are supposed to be inpartial. I think the fact that he has a gym in the first place is alot more cause for concern than the pictures he has on the wall. If I was a fighter, who was fighting a guy working out in Cortez's gym - I'd be concerned who was the ref.
If they were photo's of DLH etc working out in the gym, then maybe that is a cause for concern. But again it would be down to how "hands on" Cortez was... does he go to the gym every day to watch the fighters, or does he let someone else manage it.
Re: buncie
I agree, but I think that is somewhat harsh on Lorenzo - no way was it that one punch that made him "out of it", but I think he was definately out of it. I don't think he was acting. He was completely fecked from the legal shots.Dioufy wrote:Soto was half way through his punch when Lorenzo went down (of his own vilition as well) - I don't see how he could avoid hitting him. It should have been a stoppage win Soto, but I don't think Lorenzo was acting hurt - he looked fecked.
Re: buncie
He was only cut, so the blood made it look a lot worse than it was. He might've be stunned from the combos but wasn't hurt bad (from the punch to the back of the head I mean, and I also heard that he said to the doctor and Cortez that he had been hurt with the illegal shot, which is a lie) - he was saying to Cortez that the punch to the back of the head had concussed him at one point. So, in my opinion, he conned the referee and the fans, because it was a half shot that didn't even land clearly.
Re: buncie
Yeah he did, but I think he did that after he recovered somewhat and realised "shite I've not been counted out". I don't think he really conned the ref, cause he would have started to count if he not believed it was a back of head shot that "caused" him to go down. So maybe a bit of gamemanship to try and make it more believable for the fans - but not the ref.Dioufy wrote:He was only cut, so the blood looked made it look worse than it was. I don't think he would have beaten a ten count if Cortez would have started counting - which is what he should have done.
Re: buncie
If he wasn't cut I believe that fight would've continued - it was the cut that I think made Lorenzo start to think about acting on that "illegal" shot.
Re: buncie
I'm not sure I've seen a decent Cortez performance in the last seven months. Does Nevada have any age restriction on refs?Terry D wrote:Blimey, we agreestujones wrote:Yeah Terry, was rediculous - I honestly thought we might see him lose

The guy sat it out knowing that there was a chance he could get the DQ win. He got it but it is hardly a great way to win a fight. Every ref has good and bad nights. Apart from Eddie Cotton, he is constantly crap.
