THE MOST EXCITING FIGHTER EVER OF THE 70s

Who is the most exciting fighter ever in your view? Someone that you would not miss him fight in any type of way. Someone that you MUST SEE HIM FIGHT.

There were a lot of good ones in the 70s...Very exciting performers.

Danny "Lil Red" Lopez.
There were alot of others I enjoyed watching, but Danny was something else.

Probably Roberto Duran for his combination of intense pressure and very sound defense.

Frazier was at his best in the 1960s. Sure, he had two incredible fights in the 1970s with Ali, but aside from "Down goes Frazier!" what else? Duran in his early years, before he developed that great defense, was pretty fun to watch. And of course Danny Lopez. The whole lightweight division of the late 1960s/early 1970s was incredible.

Oh, and don't forget Alfonso Zamora, Wilfredo Gomez and Carlos Zarate.

His fight with Bugner was pretty damned fun to watch...I guess the two Ellis fights
and the Quarry rematch were pretty good ones for him too..

For me Earnie Shavers, Roberto Duran, Larry Holmes...the HW scene was some what
interesting...I really can not put my finger on one fighter as it really depends on my
mood, as weird as that may sound.

They used to say Saad was dull, until he got robbed in a fight, I think it was against Mate Parlov. His fight with Eddie Gregory was certainly a notorious stinker.
Then, after Parlov, he just turned every fight into a war in an effort to make the judges redundant. Amazing turnaround.

Whether or not Joe was at his "best" isn't the issue. I think he was still plenty exciting to watch in the 1970s. Ali-Frazier I and III were incredibly exciting. So was Quarry II.

He has to be the winner of this particular thread.

I thought of Saad and the light heavyweight division in general right after I stopped posting last night.

Could Muhammd Ali be a possible winner? He had a couple of true stinkers (Lyle, Frazier II, Young...), but he had three fights that could be counted amongst the best of all time (Frazier I, Foreman and Frazier III), and a few others that were simply very good fights (Quarry I, Chuvalo II, Quarry II, Spinks I). Even one of his crappier fights spawned the Rocky movies.

I never thought Ali-Quarry II was that exciting like you guys do. Though watching Ali fight at a high level is always fun. I wouldn't classify Ali-Frazier as a stinker; it just wasn't nearly as dramatic as their other two fights. As mentioned the Foreman fight was very exciting as well.

I agree that Saad has to be up their. The Lopez fight was probably the most exciting, but he had several good ones.

Another exciting fighter (win or lose) was Marvin Johnson.

Would you guys find Matthew Saad Muhammad that exciting if his defense had been better ?

No. Thats part of it. He was an offensive fighter. Most people are more interested in watching two guys that are great offensive/mediocre defensive fighters go at it than two guys that are great defensive/mediocre offensive fighters.
Even though overall, the defensive fighters are about even in skill as the offensive, they usually don't make for as exciting fights.

With Saad, you have a guy who fought a lot of opponents who were good offensive/mediocre defensive fighters. This made for several exciting fights that he was involved in.

Actually some of his opponents were good defensive fighters (Conteh for example), and part of the reason Saad was exciting was because he came from behind to win on more than one occasion.

I would say Duran or Saad were the most exciting. Foreman and Frazier are up there. Ali was in four "Fight of the Year" matches in the 70s, so he's at least an honorable mention.
