Personally i think it depends which Barnes turns up. So much promise yet he seems to blow hot and cold. The performance aganist james Hare made me think he could be ready to move on, yet he slipped back into a steady routine of mediocrity. He should be an interesting addition to the domestic LWW scene, yet I cant get excited about it.

Dave was considered a hot prospect up until 2003, but no one who was there will ever forget that travesty of justice against Jimmy Vincent when he was beaten hands down, but happened to get the verdict 115 114, exactly 5 years ago.
I knew then the bubble had burst and to be honest I've not seen anything to convince me otherwise since.
OK the McIntyre win looks good on the CV, but I just dont see David recreating the excitement from early in his career with Brian Hughes.
Why he left, I dont know.
There were also the issues surrounding his Army service, and a suggestion he went AWOL.
Like Wales I just cant get revved up about him anymore.

Barnesy had a lot of potential, or perhaps we thought he did because SKY told us so often he did.

But in truth, he's never delivered to that level of aspiration.

Being British Champion is a solid achievement however.

I think he's on the way back to being impressive again...Friday will tell us more. I like Morrison and it should be yet another decent scrap for the British title.

Barnes is capable of looking terrible though so I hope we see him at his best - which is very good at domestic level, at least.

I still think Barnes can go on to at least Euro title level, he did hit a bad patch in 2005, but after the Hare match (Brilliant performance), he seemed to be rushed into action to much . He looked flat after that win , but took the fights against Tolppola, Nuumbembe and Okine in a 5 month period. And he looked worse in each fight.
I'm sure there was a medical problem that was suggested at the time, but can't remember what.

He's came back with routine wins, then took on Bami, who is awkward and can punch. David scored a big points win in that one, and impressed in patches.
We have quite an abundence of talent at domestic level at light welter, Lynes, Daws, Morrison, Rees. Add boxers coming through like Paul McCloskey.
Plus Witter has been nominated to fight Branco for the Euro title, so there's a ready made match if both Barnes and Witter win.

David is 27 , so not that old, and far from finished.

That said, the whole affair stunk.
I will never forgive Vincent for doing a deal with Wazza.
There was a major campaign to get Vincent the rematch and just when the board was onside, what does he do ?
Sells out to Wazza and gets "paid off" with a WBU match against Magee.
Only one winner mate - and it wasnt the sport or the fighters.

A mate of mine fought Jimmy and beat him in a leisure centre in North Wales in the 90's. Great stuff.

One of my favorite Walker fights, he just couldn't put a dent in Vincent.

Wasn't Vincent suffering some pretty serious out of ring troubles at the time of his 1 round defeat to Jennings?

As far as Barnes is concerned, who knows? Can look world class at times and awful at others. Although I was never convinced with Hughes in his corner (Okine fight?) and glad he moved on

As long as Barnes keeps using his movement he should befuddle and outbox Morrison. If he stands still and swaps shots he could come a cropper. Barnes has to be favoured IMO.

The "win" over Vincent still sticks in my throat to this day. Barnes lost that one by a mile.

Terrific fight that Jimmy had with David Walker. An Eliminator for the British title that would put most of the so-called world title fights to shame in terms of entertainment.

Yeah Barnes seemed to have lost some fans after his win over Vincent, but it wasn't Barnes fault, it was the ref who scored it.

as a very good friend of davids i know his ability and wot he is capable of.. and i think he has every thin there to be a world champion, the better the opponent he faces the better he performs... example "james hare" he took him apart, he was world rated and very good operater david made him look average !! david to win on points against morrision or a late stoppage....

Damien Hughes I did say that yes because he has the ability to do so. BUT he did not have the right atitude to go with his ability. Thats why I told him to go and find another gym. Also I am glad he won the title back as he is still a friend of mine. Now stop being a bit ch. xx

Nooffence mate, but I couldnt score more goals than Jason Lee in the premiership, or beat Carlos Maussa in the ring, but it doesnt mean I cant come onto a boxing forum and say he's (they're), in my opinion, shite. Just because someone can beat someone else up doesnt make their opinion right, especially when were talking about david barnes winning a world title compared to beating up a boxing fan.
