According to Fight Hype's site USA Boxing has informed Luis Yanez that he is no longer on the team due to an unexcused absence from training camp. He can appeal, which I hope he does so that he can be reinstated. I've been following Luis for a few years and along with our local - Gary Russell Jr. - Luis is one of my favorite on the team. Full story can be found on spam's homepage or here: http://www.nbc5i.com/sports/16752538/de ... psp=sports

After reading the story, there seems to be some other issues with some of the boxers and their families. I hope this is really just a case of USA Boxing making sure that they treat everyone the same and by the book - with Yanez being allowed back on the team soon.

Since we only know Luis' side of the story, and USA Boxing hasn't responded....I would like to make this comment.

In the past USA Boxing has allowed athletes to get away with many infractions and has never, or rarely, exerted any discipline. Top athletes have been "rewarded for bad behavior." IF there is a legitimate reason to remove Luis, or any boxer, from the Olympic team, I am glad that USA Boxing is finally taking action and making the athlete accept responsibility. We'll just have to wait and see how this plays out. :-?

No one gets rewarded for being bad. They just don't get punished. Luis earned this place - it wasn't given to him as a favor. They'd better have a pretty serious reason for this, because otherwise it's going to seem very petty and self-defeating if they were just bossing people around with a lot of rules.

I agree with you Emile. He wasn't given a spot in the Olympics, he earned it himself and at the World Championships no less.

So you think that as long as an athlete "earns" a spot in any event, he should be allowed to compete even if he has not adheared to the rules? To me, earning a spot and behaving in a responsible manner go hand in hand.

I think that you have to very careful about the application of rules in cases like this. I'm not sure why you put the word earns in quote marks - he very clearly earned the place by defeating his competition in the Trials and then again in the Qualifiers. I don't recall there being a promptness quotient involved. Ultimately, boxing is not a team sport and to revoke his place should only be for the most serious issues, not simply because of a failure to adhere to any arbitrary team rules, well intentioned or not. If he's a big jerk who is distracting the other fighters, then send him home and let him train on his own.

As you said, we'll need to hear the other side of the story, but I do hope he is reinstated and this was just some kind of scare tactic.

All athletes who compete at the elite level are required to sign a "Code of Conduct" statement which states that they will adhere to rules and regulations as set down by USA Boxing. Every sport has a set of rules that govern the actions of their athletes and USA Boxing is no different. If the athlete does not behave according to the Code of Conduct, disciplinary action can be instituted.

As has already been stated - at this point, all we have is Luis' point of view, with no word from USA Boxing. We'll just have to wait and see what developes.

I agree with you, Mel that athletes should be held accountable for adhering to the agreement they signed. It just seems like the weight of the punishment isn't always consistent. Bar fights, missed curfew, arrests and other violations of the code of conduct have resulted in docked pay but not dismissal of US Olympic Boxers. I will reserve my judgement when I hear USA's statement but I would have thought they would have had something prepared already since they officially notified Luis and sent him home. We will see and I just hope he can stay on the team.

At this point, all of the above is nothing but unconfirmed rumors and speculation, including the story I've heard that Andrade came back to camp with a broken jaw. If, however, there is any truth to it, maybe Luis' actions, whatever they were, was the straw that broke the camel's back. Who knows.

More from ESPN:

Light flyweight Luis Yanez was kicked off the U.S. Olympic boxing team for skipping three weeks of residency training without getting permission or even telling USA Boxing where he was, national team coach Dan Campbell claims.

USA Boxing removed Yanez from the Beijing squad after the 106-pound fighter refused to return to the team's training program in Colorado Springs for most of June. Campbell said Yanez also avoided contact with his national team coaches, who became concerned for his safety.

"I gave him every opportunity, and if people knew all the stuff that he has done, they would be amazed," Campbell told The Associated Press on Tuesday. "He's one of the biggest liars I've ever met."

Yanez, who flew home to Dallas on Monday after being denied entrance to the U.S. Olympic Training Center, reacted with surprise and outrage at the decision when speaking to reporters, claiming his absence had been caused by a family emergency.

"They don't understand that family is really important," Yanez said. "If our family is really ill, I'm going to try to help as much as I can. ... I tried to work things out with them. They didn't want to work things out."

In fact, Campbell said Yanez wouldn't be in this mess if he had been willing to answer his phone during his absence -- or if he had been even slightly specific about his sister's apparent illness, which he blamed for his absence.

Campbell said Yanez later misled USA Boxing CEO Jim Millman and others, claiming he had spoken to the coach about his absences. He also criticized Yanez for telling people he was a current co-captain of the U.S. team when his turn in a rotating captaincy ended in February.

"He wouldn't communicate with anybody," Campbell said. "We would have been willing to work with him if we knew what was going on."

The trouble started when the team allowed Yanez to return home to the Dallas area for his high school graduation June 4, but asked him to return four days afterward. Yanez didn't come back, and Campbell's repeated attempts to contact him were rebuffed.

Yanez, a two-time U.S. champion who won a gold medal at the Pan-Am Games last year, still hadn't returned by the time his team set off for a training trip in Argentina last week, instead attending a send-off dinner in Dallas where a Texas state representative gave him a commemorative plaque.

Campbell finally spoke to Yanez last week, but the boxer and his father were unable to provide the name of Yanez's ailing sister's hospital or doctor, the coach said.

"Then we find out that he actually told [other boxers] he was going to [skip camp and Argentina]," Campbell said. "They thought he was just talking. I heard it from the guys when we were all in Argentina at the airport. Now he has nobody that's willing to back him. This became a very close team by the end here, and he's lost that."

USA Boxing's residency program, reinstituted by Campbell after a 24-year absence, was a source of friction with several boxers who initially wanted more work with their local coaches and more time at home. Campbell demanded residency to foster teamwork and to improve the long-struggling team's adaptation to the international game.

Most of the eight remaining boxers who will head to Beijing have come to appreciate the program's benefits, but Campbell also had disciplinary problems with light welterweight Javier Molina, who missed more training time than allowed. Campbell has been flexible with other fighters who needed time off to raise money for the trip to Beijing, but he said Yanez never gave him the opportunity.

Molina eventually responded to a last-chance legal letter demanding his return to Colorado Springs. Yanez didn't respond in time to a similar letter.

USA Boxing is in the process of scheduling a hearing with its judicial committee to appeal its decision on Yanez, spokesperson Julie Goldsticker said. Yanez also is entitled to request an outside arbitration hearing.

If Yanez's punishment stands, the U.S. team will head to Beijing with eight boxers. Yanez, fighting in a particularly tough division, wasn't among the Americans'

If Campbell side is true then Yanez is an idiot. It seems Campbell gave him numerous chances to come, even gave him a legal document saying it was his LAST CHANCE, and he still never responded. Like I said, if Campbell's comments are true then whatever happens to Yanez is his own fault

Interesting comment about Javi, too, especially since his coach posted here and chastized me for commenting about his not being in camp due to a fund raiser. Oh well.

With all the turmoil, I wonder if the OTC will continue with the residency program after the Olympics......

When I asked one of the boxers why Luis Yanez wasn't in Argentina he said "I don't know what happened to him" but it was obvious he didn't want to talk about it. When I asked Dan Campbell he just looked at me with a sad look, like frustrated and said "he should have been here".

Very sad and frustrating situation. On one hand USA want so badly to bring home some hardware, that they go through the whole process of residency, which is a lot of work and costly. We are going in minus 2 weight classes and then you have a young boxer that dosn't seem to understand how important communiction is. Such a waste at such a bad time. The article mentions that he wasn't a favorite to medal, but that is irrelivant and it sould not matter if he were a shoe in for the gold. It might hurt this year but next time there will be some boxers that understand what can and will happen if they get too far off course.

I'm still not a big fan of the residency program. However, USA Boxing does need to start cracking down on problems and that should include everyone adhering to the Code of Conduct including coaches, managers, staff members and boxers. Everyone needs to raise the bar for our sport if we want it to flourish.

The comment about Yanez not being a favorite to medal implies that if he was, i.e. Warren, Russell or Andrade, that his infractions might be overlooked. That is the wrong message to send.

I still vote for changing the qualifying process so it is done by a country qualifying in a particular weight class and not an individual boxer. That way when something like this happens, our alternate could fill the spot. We could have a repeat of the Buster Mathis - Joe Frazier process where the alternate earns a Gold Medal.

You'd throw the entire qualifying system into an uproar from which AIBA would never recover.

FightBeat recently ran an exclusive story and audio interview with USA Olympic Team Captain Luis Yanez and Sadam Ali regarding their problems in Colorado with the Olympic training. Just days after our story and interviews with both men Luis Yanez was dropped from the team. The Dallas news has a story on this matter which includes quotes from the FightBeat story. Here are a few links that will get you up to speed on this matter:

"His hands were slower cause of all the weight training they do up there. Personally, I have my guys do light weights about once a week, but nothing heavy, trying to work on speed. Power hurts but speed kills. "

This quote by Yanez' trainer definitely tells me which trainer is not up to speed on modern training methods. If Yanez never lifts heavy at home, of course he's slower when he goeas away and does it, he's not conditioned to that type of training(saying that lifting heavy makes you slower is like saying that running makes you tired, if you catch my drift). This is something the two coaches should work out together, but the fact remains that Campbell is (apparently) the one who is up to par on modern training. Yanez' trainer doesn't realize that Power is an extension of Speed. Power is mass (weight) x acceleration (speed). Since the weight divisions limit the weight factor, the improvement in power comes by improving speed. Lifting heavy is a key component in achieving speed of movement. Apparently Yanez' coach didn't read his basic training theory...

Luis is getting what he DESERVES! Look at the many online articles that have been done on him locally, the way this guy walks around like he walks on water and there are no repercussions to his actions! He told a Dallas newspaper he was the "King of Dallas", he has lied about being the team captain, he has lied about this being Dan Campbell's decision, there were others involved. He says it's a "latino thing" and he was FORCED into making a decision between his family and returning to camp......BULL! Is he trying to play the "race" card? Just because he earned his place on the team, doesn't mean he can or should take that for granted! These guys need to be responsible and APPRECIATE what they have earned and not piss it off and think they can do what they want when they want and the be no consequences! It was reveiled that he told other team members that he was not coming back on time and didn't want to go to Argentina........humm didnt he do that for the Russia trip too? " Gee I think I'll not go to work, answer the phone, play games and not call my Supervisor (Coach) directly, not show up after I am given three chances and then act like I still DESERVE my job (going to the olympics) and there be no consequences "! Luis doesn't fair well as the victim and I am VERY dissapointed with his actions and for not taking this opportunity serious!!! He talks a lot of trash about how he is being coached and trying to drag the staff through the mud, but not once has he mentioned ALL the many things he has done (or not done), his little tantrums......those that live in glass houses...............
