Lauro Salas Vs. Jimmy Carter

Post by Bobbin & Weavin »

I recently watched the 1952 bout from the Olympic where Lauro Salas beat Jimmy Carter for the lightweight championship; during the fight the announcer pointed out that Salas was wearing protective tape above both eyes and he stated, "it's legal in California". I have never seen or heard of that, the fight was in black & white so I couldn't really tell how much tape he was wearing but it certainly was there. Can anyone fill me in on this, how long it was allowed and other big fights where someone did this. I'm not totally opposed to it; I hate it when a good fight is stopped because of cuts.

I remember seeing fighters like Salas and also Art Aragon use what was called new skin or something like that, back in those years (Early 1950s).

I was at the Olympic for Salas's both fight with Carter.

It was a good fight to watch on TV 56 years later must have been great in person; I envy all of the fights you have attended; have you ever thought about sitting down and listing your top ten or so for us to see?
