"My US training trip was a scam to impress the fans. The first trip was bullshit, I wont say who came up with the ploy, but it was basically to cover up the fact that my preparation for the Gomez fight had been so bad. I didnt leave Edinburgh, but I was told to say I had spent a week in the states because it would make me look better. However, my build up couldnt have been worse. First mu US trainer Freddie Roach had to go to court after being involved in a punch-up, then he was warned he would lose his cut of manny Pacquaios purse for his win over Barrera if he spent any time in Scotland before that bout. freddie was also being inducted into the hall of fame, so there were loads of problems- fortunately they are behind me & now I have finally been to America I only wish I HAD been able to go before."
"I spent a month at Freddies gym in LA, returning to Scotland on march 4th & I would recommend it to any british fighter with serious aspirations. The sparring I had in ediburgh was poor by any standards, but the quality of the guys I was mixing with in LA was out of this world. One day Id be in with a big skinny mexican, the next it would be a slick black guy, & the day after that a Puerto Rican who wouldnt hit you anywhere legal. I sparred with unbeaten US featherweight prospect Robert 'the Ghost' Guerrero, Yoni Vargas & Nate Campell, ranked no#3 in my division. There were others too, & it was fantastic"
