ive heard that in the scramble to find a referee...both the US president and (check this ?) Sir arther Conan Doyle :roll: declined.

what on earth ?

apparently tex ricard reffed ?

what was all the hullabulloo about

werent there any refs at this time ?

I am assuming that they needed a man of status and perceived
authority.

This was a big thing, especially in the USA.

Exciting, new times no doubt.

In those days, the fighters agreed on a referee. When Jeff and Johnson couldn't agree on an established referee, they chose Tex. Same thing happened in the Johnson-Burns fight. They couldn't agree, so they settled on Hugh McIntosh, the promoter.
