callahan vs hyland

Post by 1southpaw »

mark callahan fights paul hyland for the irish super bantam title this looks like a good fight on paper but i think the unbeaten hyland will suffer his first loss against the tough man from barking what do you think

I reckon Paul should just have enough . He was often thought of as the best of the 3 brothers yet it was Eddie and Patrick who gained big wins recently in capturing Irish titles . Eddie clearly outpointed Kevin O'Hara for the Irish Super-Featherweight title and Patrick stopped Paul Griffin in 3 rounds for the Irish Featherweight title, flooring him twice .

O'Callaghan is a bit limited, but very tough and very experienced . However I think he's getting slightly worn nowdays from all the hard fights and Paul will just have too much for him technically and his freshness and youth will do the rest .

What a fight that was, in fact that whole bill was brilliant, one of the best shows I've been to in a while.

I think Paulie should have enough to win this one handly enough. All 3 boys should have titles soon. As you said Paulie is touted as the best of the bunch, and in some of his showings I would agree with those that think this. I think O'Callaghan is worn now and Paul should have the speed and skills to win this fight.

Think Hyland will have enough also, think Callaghan is past his prime now. The performances of Pickering would indicate that.

Good luck Marc, I'll be rooting for Hyland but you deserve credit for never ducking a fight!

Hyland won 98-93, I felt it was a shutout for Hyland and maybe you could make a case for possibly given Callaghan a share of one of the rounds but really he was outboxed thoroughly for all 10 and David Irving was just doing his usual make it a bit closer on the cards routine .

Since I'm lazy I'm just going to quote myself from another forum:

Paul Hyland looked very classy beating Marc Callaghan, he did a much better job on him than Pickering did not so long ago and worked Marc over with body shots time and time again but the Barking man was too tough to crumble . I think Hyland may be slightly lacking in the power department but as Steve Collins said on the broadcast it would help if he stayed on the inside a little longer rather than landed 1/2 shots and getting out again .

Hyland will be defending his title again in September and after that I'd like to see him got an okay foreign opponent(like Dunne had in David Martinez) before being pushed towards the loser of the Martinez v Munroe II fight and should he win that the winner of Martinez/Munroe v Dunne fight .

Some might say that's rushing him a bit quickly but I think he's the type of guy that if left around at too low a level for too long could go stale and if matched hard will rise to that level .

If Hyland defends his title succesfully next time out a fight with Pickering wouldn't actually be a bad idea, I think Paul would have too much for Esham at this point .

I missed the fight and the broadcast on TV3 (is that the same as TG3?) but i felt Hyland would have enough. I wrote a preview on BBN but didn't get online in time to put up the link.

What happened to the rest of the undercard anyway? It was Egan's first show but the schedule was forever changing. I rang Egan for an interview last week but he seemed busy and said he would e-mail me the details and a fight poster but it never arrived.

Hope he runs more shows though. Good luck to him.

What was the TV broadcast like? I noticed they had Carruth as a summariser.

You're actually getting a little confused there, in the Republic we have RTÉ 1, RTÉ 2, TV 3 and TG 4 .
RTÉ gets the vast majority of the viewing figures and TV 3 is thought of as the secondary channel, TG 4's programming is mainly in Irish, except for films or American drama series .
TV 3 isn't available in Northern Ireland .

Moore TKO 3 Healy
Paul Hyland PTS 98-93 Callaghan
Matinez PTS 78-76 Addy
Patrick Hyland PTS Munika
O'Sullivan PTS Stan
O'Brien TKO 2 Florin
Sweeney TKO Catalin

They showed all of the Healy v Moore and Hyland v Callaghan bouts Live and then showed the last round of Martinez v Addy and that was it .
They didn't even mention the undercard results except for Gary O'Sullivan's as Paschal Collins mentioned that he has an interest in O'Sullivan and that he won thought . Caruth actually wasn't there and it was Steve and Paschal Collins who did the analysing. Steve in the studio and Paschal as the colour commentator .

The portion of the screen taken up by the round number and time was far too big, but other than that I suppose the production was okay . Not as good as RTÉ but then again they'd be on a lower budget so it's what you'd expect .

Okay big ears thanks for clearing that one up. As for TV3 being only in the republic, well my wife asked her uncle to tape it for me and he said he did but the reception wasn't that great. So whatever it was running through, he managed to get it in the north :-?

Oh it's definitely possible that you can get it, the same way some people in Dubin can get ITV on their normal aerial but it's not meant to be broadcast in that area and most people can't watch it . Hell the reception for TV 3 where I am is terrible and if it wasn't included in the ROI Sky package then a lot less people would be able to watch it .

Anyone with a booster for their signal should be able to get it in the north aswell .

You showed great heart and deserve credit for that, Paulie is a star in the making and fair dues to you lasted the course. I think in time and I hope I am not going over the top but you will be proud of your performance, as Paulie could well go a long long way.

If you ever fight in Ireland again, I would happily cheer for you. Chin up and all the best in any of your upcoming fights, you did your self proud and battled all the way.

I was very pleased with hyland done very well and I like his style has anyone got any suggestions of people for him to defend his belt against is there any decent british super bantamweights for him to fight, that are eligible for the Irish tv? I think im right in saying they must have an Irish parent. He is goin to fight in september in dublin. Any suggestions?

You actually only need a parent or grandparent(which is how Callaghan qualified I believe), the original opponent for the fight was Stuart McFadyen and he is eligible for the title http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?hu ... &cat=boxer other than that I'm not sure of any but I'd guess there is probably at least one more . Mark Moran or John Donnelly maybe but I'm not sure either of them would go for it .

His next fight will be on September 6th in the Citywest Hotel, on his father's card .

I think Hyland is very good and can go far, surprised me a little, knew he was good but not as much as that, very smooth boxer in a way to discribe, lovely foot work and distance. Nice bloke to, I wish him all the best
