(Please forgive, neither of these fighters can be considered west coast, but I know I'll get a legit response here.)
I Think this would be a toss-up-you-pick'em kind of fight, but if you put a gun to my head, I'll go with Charles, but I won't bet the ranch on it.
Both won the HW title been no more then LH's, but I think that Charles fought a better class of fighters.

This is a good match that I have thought about some time ago. I really am uncertain
as to how to visualise it, as Charles had a unique speed in that he would lead to the
body swiftly and throw these short sharp shots that set up his rythm.
The first round is even and could be described as tentative as each fighter looks
for an angle that the other is not offering. Charles manages to thump some
right hands to Floyd's body while each man clinches. Charles is looking to clinch,
and drill the body with rights, while Patterson attempts to burst free blasting
combinations as both men back away.
This happens for the first three rounds, neither man clearly dominating, nor able
to establish a clear cut game plan. It is Charles with his work rate that seems
to be troubling Patterson, who is loading up with the wide leaoping left hook
that has now gained dominance.
It is safe to call the fight for Charles by the fifth round, as Patterson, though
clearly the faster man is spurting in-frequently while leaping with the left hook
as a counter that rarely catches an elusive Charles. By the end of the round
Charles is corndered and rocked by a flurry of left hooks and straight right
hands by patterson.
The sixth round opens with an inspired Patterson who is throwing the jab and
right lead with greater effect, as Charles backs away, giving up terriorty as
he looks for a counter of his own.
The seventh is a big round for Patterson who blasts a stiff shot to the liver
region of Charles followed by a right hand that stumbles Charles. Ezzard is
in trouble and doing his best to rally, he throws hooks towards the body of
Patterson who seems now to be playing a calculated and aggressive game
against the LHW master. The round ends with both men in the clinch working
uppercuts and kidney taps with the right glove.
Charles is off his stool in the eighth meeting Patterson in the centre of the
ring with a right hand that lands followed by an uppercut that seems to
lift floyd's head from his shoulders. Patterson covers up, but his legs
seem to have escaped him. Charles firing right hands manage to land
some that send Patterson to the canvas.
Patterson is up, shaking his head and looking clearly disappointed with
himself. The round ends 30 seconds later with both men again back in
the clinch.
Round 9 begins with the crowd alive and roaring, both fighters focused
and circling the other. Patterson from the high guard throws a double
jab and right hand that thumps into the gloves of Charles who throws
a wide left hook...missing...just. Patterson is leading with crosses that
Charles blocks with his mitt...countering with the jab and left hook.
With a minute left in the round Patterson leaps with a perfectly timed
left hook that drops Charles like a buckshot. Charles pulls himself up
with the referee standing in front of him...the fight continues...Charles
holding on, clinching desperate to hear that bell to save him from a violent
and fast patterson who manages to land a combination of stright rights
and left hooks that thud with raw force into Charles' body and shoulders.
The ref having seen enough jumps between both men, waving his arms,
giving the win to Patterson.....
Well thats atleast how I see the fight today...even though I am suppose to
be working ;)
