Catley retired???

Post by knockout »

Just looking at one of Bennies threads and it mentions the retirement of Glen Catley.

Although the timing is probably right, lets not forget what Glen has achieved as a Pro... He was a real over achiever and became a real world champion out of his weight division and was incredibly unlucky not to win the Euro super middle weight crown, getting shafted in Germany.

Hats off to Glen!!!!!!!!

Catley shouldn't have even lost his WBC title to Thobela, because Thobela had his hands illegally wrapped in the fight. Catley siad his jabs felt like a brick was hitting him. Catley's team proved that Thobela had cheated with video evidence, and the WBC ordered a rematch. However Thobela lost his next fight to Davey Hilton, and then he got stripped for playing around with little girls. This meant that Catley had to fight Eric Lucas, and he lost.

The collapses to Thobela and Lucas are pretty hard to watch but boy did he ever go and do a job on Beyer (eventually). One of the best results ever for a British lad fighting away from home.

of course Catley owns a very impressive stoppage victory over Lucas.... very impressive as besides Glen only RJJ stopped him in his prime....

Good thread. I saw him a few times in the Empire gym in Bristol and he was a very down to earth, friendly guy. Strangely enough though I always felt he could have made middleweight and super middle wasn't his natural weight.
At a time where we're complaining about guys like Calzaghe and Hatton never fighting abroad, we shouldn't forget that Glen showed real 'old school' spirit with his willingness to take on anyone, anywhere.
He used to spar a lot with Dean Francis and Francis always looked special. I believe he could have gone so much further if it wasn't for his spell in prison and his shoulder problem. Would have loved to have seen him reach his full potential and then take on Calzaghe. Still think Joe would have come out on top, but it would have been one hell of a fight.

Francis was REAL world class, I mean top 5 in the world...
He didnt lose to Barney, how Matthew got that decision i will never know.

Catley was a middleweight, he only stepped up to take a late notice payday against Woodhall and ended up beating him (well 3 blind fcuks thought otherwise, but Woodhall was man enough to admit he lost the fight)

The other great thing about Glen is the way he overcame his natural limitations and gifts through sheer grit and willpower. Let's face it, after he lost to that Hungarian journeyman Szabo at middleweight who'd have tipped him to move up and dethrone two world champs on their home turf?
Real life Rocky!

Francis' shoulder injury proved calamitious. A cruel twist of fate in a cruel world. He and Catley were class. Both complete fighters. Glenn was especially good at having his head in the right place at the right time. But he was more than just a dirty fighter. Beating Lucas in Canada and Beyer in Germany were phenomenal results. He stopped Lucas in Canada years before Danny Green did the same thing, yet Green seemed to get more praise.

Lucas's thyroid problem two years ago clearly took a lot out of him, he was never the same afterwards....

Catley is a UK version of Holyfield, a constant over achiver. who looked bad when he should look good and looked great when he should have lost or looked bad....

Yes, indeed, knockout. Glenn was surprisingly vulnerable in rematches and the loss to Thobela was inexplicable (dodgy bandaging or no dodgy bandaging). I could never quite get my head around the fact he lost his super-middleweight crown to a former lightweight champ. It defied belief.
Still, what I liked about Catley was that, even though he was built like a brawler, he was a beautiful boxer. He outboxed Woodhall in Telford. Took away his jab. I don't think Woodhall caught him cleanly to the head once in 12 rounds.
