Amir Khan to be trained by Freddie Roach - Audio link

its a 95% done deal, Khan trained with a few guys including Mayweather and decided that Roach was the best trainer to take him to next level so verbally offered him the job and Roach agreed but he's tied up till 26th July with his boxer Conception's world title fight on the Cotto/margarito undercard so will fly to England on 27th July to work out contract details and training schedule.

The earliest Khan will begin training with Roach is early August leaving only 5 weeks training to Khan's next fight on September 6th so probably wont be enough to make the vast improvements in defence and punching

Freddy has been around boxing for many years, is highly experienced. Khan is the pupil, Roach is the teacher. If Khan wants to progress, he'll listen to Roach. There should be no opinions from anyone else in respect of this.

well i'm 110% sure this is a done deal but leaving a 15% margin of error so therefore that left me with 95%

DLH was better under roach than he had been under Mayweather. Two of his official losses have come under Mayweather as well as a sloppy performance vs Sturm and not brilliant against Forbes. And although he was gutsy against Vargas - he probably strugggled more than he needed to. He was also the only fight to get Tyson near to peak condition (weight wise) since the Brian Neilson fight.

I think Roach is an inspiratory figure to have around. Being around a guy who gets by under his condition so well must be an inspiration.

I'm not convinced by Roach. With the exception of Pacman I can't remember another fighter he's improved. DLH was okay against Floyd, but not great. Manfredo Jr was awful against Lacy.

As mentioned above, Roger Mayweather or even Floyd Sr are the only US trainers that would improve his defensive skills.

Delahoyas stamina was far better under Roach

Tyson got back down to 225 (after fighting around 235-240) and looked superbly sharp under Roach (albeit for a few seconds)

Roach isn't the very best technical guy but as Futch trained guy is much better than what Amir has been working with. Amir's defense will improve under Roach. He'll certainly get his fighters in the sharpest best shape of their career.

If anything Roach did too good a job with Tyson in getting him back to the best fighting shape he'd probably been in since post jail, his body simple couldnt take it and his knee popped out towards end of 1st rd which lead to him being knocked out

But it ain't shape that Amir needs, it's the ability to defend and Roach has never been successful at that. We all know Amir's fit as a fiddle.

I'd actually think someone like McGirt would be best. McGirt was a solid technical fighter in his day. Khan has all that speed. If Amir can be refined by Buddy he would be much more rounded and sensible in there.

Roach teaches ppl to be aggressive. Khan only omes forward when he has a gy in trouble. Will this be an epic mismatch of trainer/fighter styles like Virgil Hill and Johnny Lewis? What Khan needs is a balance of offense and defence. A nice, tidy balance.

I'd think all he needs is someone who can fine tune. Any decent American trainer could do that. Ronnie Shields - look at the changes he's made in Vanes Martirosyan over the space of only a few fights. Vanes was an octopus who moved in straight lines. Now he throws compact punches and moves well, with excellent balance. But I think we've seen Shields do poor corner work in fights, when his guy has been getting a working over.

Obviously, he will see a nice mix of styles at the Wild Card Gym. But will Amir be kept away from punchers in there? (Didn't he spar Fewkes for the Gomez fight?). I suppose a big factor is how Khan feels, who he likes, how comfortable he is with whatever trainer.

I'm still not convinced with McGirt, he seems a bit hit and miss to me. He continued Gatti's shelf life for several years, his Son looked a bit ragged in his last fight and I think he's regressed Smigga's skills. However, maybe his training works better with smaller fighters.

As you say, he was a very good "little" fighter in his day.

You watch how quick Khans defence improves when pacman is wolloping him in the chops. How will it work though, we all remember the Roach & Arthur debacle.

Split loyalties now. Roach is one of my favourite characters in boxing, whilst Khan, well, I just want him to lose.
