Mando Ramos vs Sugar Ramos
In 1970, this bout was voted "Fight of the Year" in Los Angeles, and I doubt there was a more violent, action packed bout held anywhere in the world at the time. Mando had lost his lightweight title a few months earlier to Ismael Laguna, and afterwards had undergone plastic surgery to remove scar tissue left from the cuts he received in the match with the Panamanian. Once healed, he signed to fight Sugar Ramos, who performed a little plastic surgery of his own on the young former champ. With his tender eyebrow tissue ripped open, Ramos hung in and captured a close, but unanimous decision victory. The photo Frank posted was shot by Olympic Auditorium house photographer, Theo Ehret, who captured Mando's dramatic win thru the lens of his ringside camera.

Guys, just back in town, this is such a bummer. I've met Mando a number of times, the last few times with Rick. The dude loved life. Obits have been all over the place, but this one carries the Ramos vs Ramos fight in pristine condition. Please check it out to see what this fighter brought to the table, although the picture this article carries is not Mando Ramos and I'm having a problem ID'ing the fighter. But don't let it take away from the fight. Enjoy.

Mexican seafood finds a home in L.A. County

By Linda Burum, Special to The Times

IT'S A good time for Mexican seafood in Southern California, if you know where to look. Three seemingly modest restaurants, Mariscos los Arcos in Canoga Park, Mariscos el Rey in Lynwood and El Puerto Escondido in Hawthorne are worth seeking out for their pristinely fresh ingredients and their beautifully prepared seafood appetizers, soups and entrees.

These three marisquerías, as Mexican seafood specialty houses are called, serve the West Coast-style dishes of Mexico's Pacific beach towns.

Unlike the cuisines of the interior, where the food of each region has a distinct character, or Mexico's East Coast, where Mayan or Spanish influences prevail, menus and preparations on the Pacific coast vary little from Puerto Angel in the far south to Guaymas, more than 1,000 miles north.

Dishes are fairly straightforward, so success is primarily about careful sourcing and the attention to detail you find at these three spots.

At Mariscos los Arcos, an order of camarones ahogados (drowned shrimp) compares favorably with dishes you might find at a tony sushi bar. A ceviche-like creation of citrus-marinated raw shrimp that glisten under a speckled cloak of fresh green chile sauce, it's a refreshing and piquant appetizer. The restaurant, whose decor runs to comfortable upholstered booths, makes a great spicy fish soup called "Costa Brava" and mixed seafood campechana, the Mexican-style mixed seafood cocktail, which it presents in a giant conch shell.

Mariscos el Rey, on the second floor of a graceful Spanish-Colonial-style building in Lynwood's Plaza Mexico, may be just a walk-up window with outdoor seating, but its tiny kitchen prepares dishes that would be completely at home in more formal surroundings. For its version of camarones ahogados, shrimp are butterflied to better highlight a fiery habanero chile marinade.

Follow the intense heat of that appetizer with callitos de lobina, a ceviche of strips of delicate large-mouth bass laid out on a plate like a Latin American crudo. It's a style many prefer to diced or minced ceviche.

Soups here are exemplary too. A simple caldo de pescado, clear tomato and fish broth with a gentle oregano finish, is filled with tender skinless catfish chunks. In the caldo de pulpo (the octopus version), the meat is almost velvety in its tenderness. It's customary to squeeze a little fresh lime juice into the broth and add chopped cilantro and onion to the soup, which adds layers of flavors.

Similar attributes make El Puerto Escondido, which opened a new branch in April on El Segundo Boulevard in Hawthorne, a terrific discovery. The restaurant, with its retro chrome-edged tables and newly upholstered circular booths, serves seafood in every imaginable guise.

I'm in love with the dish the menu calls "Happy Oysters." Freshly shucked and on the half shell, each oyster rests under a small mound of Mexican-style chopped shrimp cocktail sparked with cilantro, lime and minced onion -- a sublime combination.

The restaurant does brisk business with grandly presented botanas, appetizer platters to be shared. The botana of tiritas features barely marinated fillet of perch cut into thin, banana-length strips and lightly coated in a sheer veil of Mexican-style cultured cream that tempers the sharp citrus tang.

Cooked dishes are creative. Filete al vapor is perch fillet steamed to order in a foil packet with loads of shrimp. Bits of onion, tomato and Jack cheese meld with the seafood juices to make a delicious, brothy, cheese-laced sauce. The classic soup caldo de siete mares is light and fresh, generously stocked with Alaskan crab legs, mussels and shrimp.

This new branch of El Puerto Escondido also whips up freshly squeezed orange, carrot or celery juices (or a blend) and piles of thick, crunchy home-fried tortilla chips.

I used to think the original El Puerto Escondido in Inglewood had such fresh seafood because of its close proximity to LAX, but this Hawthorne branch and the one in East L.A. are its equal. On Thursdays at each of them, a half-dozen just-shucked oysters on the half shell go for $3.99.

Plus, there's a drive-through window (left behind by the building's former tenant). Like the curbside pickup service offered by some delis, it's so L.A. and yet, like the flair and freshness of the food at these mariscos spots, may come as a very pleasant surprise.

Expug wrote:Hey guys , you will be glad to hear that Mandos obituary made it into the Chicago newspapers here.
A nice right up about his career.
Don´t know what it was. Felt down yesterday. Had a pain in my hip. Oh everything is going swell wiith the kids dancing and playing the guitar. My wife is having a great time, but yesterday I felt lousy. Went to the beach and still couldn´t shake that feeling.

I´m sitting in the lounge chair at this beautifull beach in Spain and you think I should be having the time of my life, but today I´m down. I got to thinkung about Mando Ramos. Then it dawned on me. Nothing on the news here about his passing. So maybe you ask,¨who cares about his death all the way in Spain?

Well you guys know the story of him winning the title from Pedro Carrasco. A fews years back Carrasco was voted over here as Spain´s greatest sports hero. Not no bullfighter,or a bicicyle rider, soccer player or that Nadal guy who just won the big tennis match. It was Carrasco. Why? Because he was the only world champ in boxing Spain ever had.

Well this young kid from Long Beach goes over there to try to win Pedro´s crown. No easy feat. Carrasco has lost only once in over 100 fights. But he fights mostly in Spain and he´s never tangled with the likes of Ruben Navarro,Frankie Crawford,Laguna,Cruz,Sugar Ramos. Just to name a few of the tough guys our Southland guy has gone up against.

Carrasco is the man in Spain. Very continental. James Bondish in a way. Tons of money. In the movies, television. Winds up marrying Spain´s most beautifull and popular actress. Well our guy is partying in Boyle heights. Still hangin´out with the guys in the neighborhood. But he´s our guy and we´re pullin´all the way for him in Spain.

As the fight progresses the fans over there are witnessing their idol getting his butt kicked. Mando came into the ring with a couple of Norteno bands loaded in his gloves. Carrasco looked like he was packin´Mantovani and Strings. By round 11,all the instruments in the orchestra have been smashed and Carrasco is on the seat of his pants. He ain´t gonna´last. Well in Spain they won´t have the inevitable happen so the ref DQ´s our Southland kid on a foul. Carrasco is still the champ,a national hero, but everyone knew, Sure they celebrated, but they saw what happened. Jesse James couldn´t have commited a better robbery.

There´s a rematsh and then the rubber go back in LA. and Mando wins them both in close decisions. Could have gone the other way maybe, but Mando was doin´his Mando thing and spending more time with Jose Cuervo than his trainers. Carrasco retires ,still a hero and goes back to Spain to live the good life on the Riviera. We know what happened with our guy. He could beat them all, except himself. Sleeping in cars and out of the game and broke before 30.

Saw Mando like i was tellin´ya´at the Banquet in Commerce CA:
. The town had seen it´s best years a long time ago. Just the way Mando looked that afternoon. He got up their with his dad to get his plaque. His dad was shadow boxing. Mando was smiling and he talked about Spain. He said the people there called him ¨The Lion Of Spain ¨But there were sour grapes from our guy about that decision. He went back to Spain to to spend his money on booze and broads and blow the rest. He was happy that afternoon at the steakhouse.

So as I was sitting on the beach in Spain watching the brown bouncing boobies in the surf and watching the boys play soccer in the surf line,I thought of the kid from Long Beach. Our guy goin´over there and when it was over they called him the Lion Of Spain.

Dagos . . . Mando told me that his father was upset that he hadn't trained a day for Carrasco before leaving to Spain for the fight. I asked if he had worked out at all after arriving in Spain, and the former champ said, "No, the first thing my dad and I did after stepping off the plane was get drunk, and stay drunk, right up to the weigh-in. Mando also said that he was given a nickname in Spain. Mi Espanol is kinda weak and I don't remember how to say it in Spanish, however, in English it translated- "Born with boxing gloves on his hands", in other words, he was a "natural boxer". Truer words were never spoken.

Dagos, hope your hip feels better, pal. Sounds to me you are enjoying Spain as Mando did.

Message from Sylvia Ramos to Boxrec posters . . .

This morning I spoke with Sylvia Ramos for nearly an hour. She's doing well, considering. She's been surrounded by family and friends and is taking care of business, having not yet felt the full impact of her loss. "We were connected at the hip", Mando used to tell me when describing his love for the woman of his life. Sylvia was wife, mother, best friend, caretaker, secretary, chauffer, etc. to Mando. They were inseperable. Whenever Mando would visit me at the studio, Sylvia was right there with him. For more than three decades Sylvia Ramos was a part of Mando Ramos, the best part, as Mando would say, "She's not my wife, she's my angel".

Sylvia and Mando liked the way I wrote and hoped I would write Mando's life story, in the style in which I write. I always took this as a compliment and it's exactly what I will do. I told her about all about the posters here, Mando's friends and fans, and the words that are being written about Mando on this thread. Sylvia was grateful to know that her husband is being remembered here and she expressed her desire for me to encourage everybody to continue acknowledging the champ, knowing that is exactly what he would want. "Don't hold anything back", she insisted, "Mando never did. He always told it as it was, never tried to sugar coat or alter the truth."

Life is what it is, and Mando was special, that's for sure. So, I'll continue to post the many memories I have, stories that came directly from Mando's lips, those I was a part of, and ones that many might consider a bit graphic. Hell, Mando was realistic about the world and, He LOVED attention! Now is not the time to ignore the man who gave us soooo much pleasure. It's the least we can do for Ramos, and I believe in my heart that his spirit is close at hand, wanting to soak up all that he deserves.

This photo is Jerry Quarry, circa 1967-68, about the time he fought Floyd Patterson. Funny, I can usually identify within a few months when a photo was taken of Jerry, by his hair style. I got to know Jerry up close & personal during the years he fought out of the Johnny Flores stable. In those days, Jerry and Mando Ramos were my idols.

By the way, if interested in story I wrote on Jerry Quarry ("My Memories of Jerry Quarry") just click on the link below:

Aragon & Ramos . . .

Shortly after Mando Ramos started to break Art Aragon's box-office records at the Olympic Auditorium, the press began to tag Mando, "The New Golden Boy". Art Aragon may not have been pleased, but was kind enough to present Ramos with a pair of gold boxing trunks, just like he wore during his career. Mando, who had a lot of respect for Aragon and boxing history, wore the trunks for one of his bouts, however announced after the fight that there was "only ONE Golden Boy, and that's Art Aragon." Never again did Ramos wear the gold trunks.

Mando knew he would create his own legacy, and didn't want to "steal" something that Art had earned for himself. In my opinion, that's CLASS! For a short while, reporters tried to bestow the title upon Olympic gold medalist Paul Gonzalez, but Paul never had the charisma of the originals, and the tag did not stick. With all respect to Oscar DeLaHoya, another Olympic medalist, I was disappointed when the press once again yanked Aragon's ring name from history books and handed it to Oscar. For DeLaHoya it might have been good business, however, in my eyes there is only ONE Golden Boy, and it ain't Oscar.

These two never fought, of course, which is probably for the best. They would have literally knocked lumps out of one another (and smiled while they were doing it).
When my father lived in New York for a while with his Uncle Chaz, they´d catch a fight at the Garden or St. Nicks. Once in a while Rocky and Jake would be there sitting across the ring from each other. Sometimes between fights, one would stand up and shout at the other,¨You better hope I don´t fight you because I´ll kick your ass. ¨
The reply:¨What do you mean kick my ass. I´ll kick yours.¨
The word in the Bronx was that these two guys were like brothers. It´s not like they wouldn´t have fought their hearts out against each other, but they liked the relationship the way it was.
When they would shout at each other it was all for show.

Well pal since you´re willin ´to take a shot at this, there´s´ one thing I got to tell ya´. She has to ba married to an American to get over here. Here´s the options.
Number One: You introduced me to your son Jimmy. Good lookin´kid. He´s not married. If he has a girlfriend, well put it this way. If I had to rate Monique on a scale of 1 to 10,I´d have to invent the number 11. You´d have a new daughter in law.
Number Two: You could show the picture of Connie asleep on the couch with the cast on her leg that you showed the world on the Internet and she´d probably divorce you and then you could marry Monique.
Number Three: I could teach my wife how to read and write and then she could look at the bank statements and see how much money I´ve blown on having a good time. She´d probably leave me and then I could marry Monique.

Any one of these choices seems reasonable and who ever winds up with her is probably going to die of a heart attack except Jimmy.

One day, in line at the company cafeteria, Joe says to Mike behind him,='My
elbow hurts like hell. I guess I'd better see a doctor.'

'Liste=, you don't have to spend that kind of money,' Mike replies.

'There's a=20 diagnostic computer down at Wal-Mart. Just give it a urine sample
and =he computer will tell you what's wrong and what to do about it. It takes
ten seconds and costs ten dollars . . . a lot cheaper than a doctor.'

So, Joe deposits a urine sample in a small jar and takes it =o Wal-Mart.

He deposits ten dollars and the computer lights up and asks=for the urine
sample. He pours the sample into the slot and waits.

=en seconds later, the computer ejects a printout:

'You have tennis elbow=. Soak your arm in warm water and avoid heavy activity.
It will improve in two weeks. Thank you for shopping at Wal-Mart.'

That evening, while thinking how amazing this new technolo=y was, Joe began
wondering if the computer could be fooled.

He mixed so=e tap water, a stool sample from his dog, urine samples from his
wife and daug=ter and added a sperm sample for good measure.

Joe hurries back to Wal-Ma=t, eager to check the results. He deposits ten
dollars, pours in his concoction and awaits the results.

The computer prints the following:

1. Your tap water is too hard. Get a water softener.=20 (Aisle 9)

2. Your dog has ringworm. Bathe him with anti-fungal shampoo. (Aisle 7)

3. Your daughter has a cocaine habit. Get he= into rehab.

4. Your wife is pregnant. Twins. They aren't yours. Get a lawyer.

5. If you don't stop playing with yourself= your elbow will never get better!

Enjoy.

Uno Mas on Ramos vs. Rojas . . .

Here's one that Mando told me and it's a classic!

A couple of weeks before Mando Ramos and Raul Rojas tangled at the Olympic, Mando threw a birthday party for his baby son, Armando Jr., who was just one-year-old. Naturally, the party wasn't really for the baby, but for Mando and his then wife Stella's friends. Mando hired a very popular Mexican band and had the event catered. Rojas had been talking a lot of trash about his former stablemate, and Mando was doing his best to stay clean & sober. To avoid temptation, he invited his manager Jackie McCoy and his wife Shirley, to attend the party.

Everybody was having a good time until McCoy tapped Mando on the shoulder and informed him that Raul Rojas had just walked thru the front door. "What's he doing here, did you invite him?", McCoy asked. Ramos was surprised to see his former stablemate and next opponent show up, uninvited, but being the gracious host that he was, Mando greeted Raul at the door and invited him to have a good time.

Rojas asked Mando if they could have a few words alone, and the two walked into another room to talk.

"Listen", Rojas said, "I want to to tell you old friend, this will be my last fight. I have no desire to box anymore and the only reason I'm going thru with it is for the money. I haven't trained one day and plan to make it look good for a round or two, and then lay down. Would you please do me a favor, just for old times sake, and take it easy on me? I know I'm too old to beat you, but don't want to be humiliated. Could we let the past be the past and be friends again?"

Mando put his arms around Rojas and gave him a big hug, promising to go light on him, and also encouraged Raul to stay and enjoy the party. Rojas declined, saying he just wanted to bury the hatchet and give Mando Jr. a present, handing Mando a gift wrapped toy for the little boy. A few minutes later, Raul Rojas left left the party.

When Mando returned to the party, Jackie McCoy asked, "What did he want?" Mando answered, "Nothing, he just wanted to say, 'may the best man win'." A short while later, a suspicious McCoy and his wife left the party, and the moment he did, Mando cracked open a bottle of beer and fired up a joint. Now the party was on, Mando was now a passenger on the "no stress express", confident he needn't worry about his conditioning any longer.

"I didn't show up in the gym for a week, just had fun", Mando told me. When Ramos finally surfaced from a week of drinking and drugging, he showed up at the gym and was greeted by a furious McCoy. "Where in the Hell you been? Your going to get killed, Raul is in the best condition of his life, word is he's knocking out his sparring partners!"

With less than a week remaining before the match, Mando started to run again, and tried to make-up for the time lost, but by fight night, he was far from peak condition. Luckily, Mando's tremendous skill and punching power would prevail. After the match, Mando encountered Rojas in the dressing room, "Why did you tell me you weren't training, what was that about?", he asked.

Rojas just shook his head and answered, "F___ You, asshole!", then walked away.

What a story! A page right out of life, proving once again that facts can always trump the best fiction! Thanks for that.
