What do you mean by CHICANO? Mexican?

If so then the obvious answer is JC Chavez. Any other answer is wrong.

I agree but Oscar should be up there for his impact in and out of the ring.

Chavez is not a CHICANO! a chicano is a U.S. born of Mexican decent, so in that case, Ortiz would be hard to beat as the best CHICANO fighter in history.

Julio Cesar Chavez owns a house in Chula Vista. Does that make him a chicano?

Julio C. Chavez was born in Mexico not in the U.S.
Oscar De La Hoya and Fernando Vargas were born in the U.S. not in Mexico.

However, I consider all of them Mexican.

You can consider them Mexican if you want, but it doesn't make them so, anybody of any color that was born in the U.S.A. is American, even I who didn't have much schooling knows that.

Asking who the greatest Chicano of all time is like asking who the greatest Italian-American, the greatest Irish-American or greatest Jewish-American fighter of all time is. In which case someone might respond with Rocky Marciano, Mickey Walker and Benny Leonard (or something thereabout). They were all very much American by birth but leaned heavily on their cultural heritage.

The greatest Chicano fighters may be first generation Mexican-Americans or they could very well trace their Mexican roots to the 1800s or before. Because of geographical ties and cultural influence they retain a strong Mexican identity.

Some of the greatest Chicano fighters include Manuel Ortiz, Oscar de la Hoya, Paulie Ayala, Bobby Chacon, Mando Ramos and Tony “the Tiger” Lopez.

I would say Manuel Ortiz was probably the greatest. If not, at least in the top three.

Given that Frank has seen, I bet, most of the great Chicano fighters of the last 50 years - and I haven't - I have no problem acknowledging his greater expertise and judgment. if Frank says Ortiz was the best, then that carries a lot of weight with me.

I've lived in California for most of my life, and if anyone tried to tell a chicano that he wasn't a real Mexican, he'd get his ass kicked.

Well, Frank has lived in California ALL his life, and he's Chicano by definition (a native-born U.S. citizen of Mexican ancestry), so this is another area where I, for one, will yield to his greater expertise. . .

You´re right, but if that Chicano was to go to Mexico and tell a Mexican National that he was a Mexican,he´d start a Revolution.

I used to coach American football in Tijuana. One of the players was very good. He asked me how he could play in the U.S bacause he wanted to play for a big school here and get a scholarship. I went to coach on the U.S. side and brought him with me. We worked a foreign exchange deal. Anyway the kid tells me,and remember he´s a Mexican National, not to put him with a Chicano family.
¨We don´t like Chicano´s. They think they´re Mexican and they´re not.¨
DeLa Hoya never got mentioned hardly at all in the Mexican papers. I remeber when he won the Olympics, they called him an American. Which he is.
