Is Golden Boy getting to powerful

Post by Old bones Ian »

Just seen that USA Boxing the amatuer part of boxing in the US, has signed a deal with Golden Boy Promotions.
see article.

http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/10072008/ ... atics.html

How long till we see a Golden Boy body along the lines of the WBC or WBA, they already own The Ring magazine, which has a title in each division, so maybe we're not that far away from it.

All that shines is not Golden sometimes.

Hauser did a good article for Boxing Monthly on the relation between GBP and HBO, where the two were too close, making it tough to get on HBO unless you're with GBP, etc etc.

They're too fvckig much really, aren't they?

I can see why ppl gravitate towards them. They can give a boost to brits like Haye, who want to get on HBO (though if Haye has his own company, why not cut out GBP & go straight to HBO once he's used to this kind of thing?). With the long term deal between HBO and GBP, more fighters will have to come to GBP for the money & exposure. But there has to be an imbalance. HBO simply don't have enough dates to accommodate everyone. A lot of guys could be fighting on anonymous undercards. What happens if you fvck up on your big HBO date, on GBP "promoted" card?

Likely, you get sent to the bottom of the pile; cue the next big thing who takes your place.

Golden Boy with HBO and F rank Warren with UK channels, people have often said they are too powerful, maybe they are and maybe the monopoly gets boring and unhealthy but you could then flip the coin and say its up to the other promoters to do something about their marketability. There are promoters out there who hand things in their grasp but due to them making mistakes they have not and never will reach the heights of Golden Boy and W arren.

Golden Boy and W arren have got there one way or another perhaps others should start taking the risks instead of taking things for granted.

Case in point, Rocky Juarez. Had his big chances and has taken a long time to get back up to a respected fighter because they threw him in a little deep against Barrera and Marquez. Hauser did another great article about how GBP are ruining their young talent to continue to sell the old guard, which was very good.

Personally, in 10 years time I think they'll have a UFC like brand where they have a unique TV deal (SPIKE), a belt (RING), a magazine (RING), a TV show (rewmeber Oscar has already tried once and GBP fighters started popping up on The Contender) and only GBP fighters can fight for the GBP belt.

In some ways that might not be a bad thing provided they STOP doing shit like they pulled with the mandated rematch of Santa Cruz and Casamayor.

Alas, no mate. They wanted Forbes v DLH to be a PPV card. Hauser wrote another good article on how HBO are paying GBP disgusting amounts of money ($5m for the licence for the Forbes fight) and yet other TV stations get fights dead cheap for non-GBP cards (Versus paid $100k I believe for Hatton's fight). I would argue both were of about the same quality.

HBO, nay Greenburgh and Traffaut, need to get their thumbs out their asses and demand decent match ups or they tell GBP where to go.

Surely as a rule of thumb tho they have put on the big fights?
HBO are in a much stronger position than the BBC with Harrison or ITV with FW, to demand quality action, and surely it is in their interests to do it

GBP hold the cards as they have the top fighters. If HBO don't buckle to their demands they'll take their band of merry men elsewhere so HBO are forced to show the crap because when they do put on a decent show it sells.

I really wish I could find that bloody article. It was really good.

GP is the supreme, but Top Rank has very good top exciting fighters on the elite stage!

They probably have the three most exciting in Pavlik, Cotto and Pac.

HBO demand nothing at all with GBP at this present time, they seem to be pleased merely to have GBP on board as they realise at this present time they are making some very good signings.

At the present time GBP are doing what they want, so I agree someone needs to put their foot down and ensure they do not get a situation we have had in UK with Frank W arren.

However with all that said it is GBP and Frank W arren who put their money where their mouth is and as such it is they who are taking the risks.

It is a very interesting dilemna, on one hand a boxing promoter has to make his money and on the other hand the fans need to be drawn in with quality match ups.

The way the TV networks treat Haymaker promotions and Punch Promotions (Hatton) is going to be very interesting, whilst the TV will get what they want in regards to the top of the bill being Haye and Hatton what will the undercards be like?

Why are GBP supreme?

HBO give TV dates to anything that GBP show. Crappy seniors tour fights, weight mismatches, along with the good stuff. If not for HBO favouritism, where would they be?

It keeps on begging the question - who is the promtoer, Golden Boy or HBO?

I don't know if GBP can actually develop their own fighters. Look at Top Rank, who developed guys like Pavlik, Lopez, Cotto in satisfying ways. Not seen GBP do anything like that. They made a right pig's ear with Rey Bautista, have had disastrous excursions in the middle and super middle divisions, and are massively overrated. They just have a nice little set up.

Top Rank developed FMJR as well...and RJJR to some extent.
