What fighter that is not in the IBHOF would you nominate to be inducted? And why he deserves such an honor?

LLOYD MARSHALL

Was a top fighter for a long time, beat a sh*tload of Hall of Famers and future/former world champions.

Every year I bitch about Lloyd Marshall not being in the IBHOF.

Hall-of-Fame fighters he beat:
  • Charley Burley: Marshall was 1-0 against the ATG. Burley was in his prime and Marshall was the underdog.
  • Ezzard Charles: TKO8 in 1943! The two fought again in 1946 and 1947. Charles won both times, but Marshall put him down in the 1946 bout.
  • Jake LaMotta: Crowd booed the decision, but the AP and the UP scored the bout for Marshall.
  • Holman Williams: Marshall was 1-2 against the great Williams.
  • Joey Maxim: Look at this fucking shit. Marshall overcame a 20-pound weight disadvantage to beat Maxim!
Other champions/top fighters he beat:
  • Johnny "Bandit" Romero: Murderer's Row fighter from my hometown of San Diego. Big-punching southpaw. Holds victories over Shorty Hogue, Archie Moore and Marshall. Marshall went 2-1 in their series.
  • Ken Overlin: Future NYSAC World Middleweight Champion who beat Ezzard Charles, Fred Apostoli, Ceferino Garcia and Steve Belloise
  • Teddy Yaroz: Top middleweight who beat Archie Moore, Ken Overlin, Lou Brouillard and Billy Conn!
  • Lou Brouillard: Former World Welterweight Champion.
  • Shorty Hogue: Three victories over Archie Moore plus wins over Johnny Romero and the great Eddie Booker. Marshall went 1-1.
  • Freddie Mills: Mills won the World Light Heavyweight Championship a year later.
  • Curtis "Hatchetman" Sheppard: Arguably one of the biggest hitters of all time! He was months away from stopping Joey Maxim in the first round, and he had a 10-pound weight advantage against Marshall. He had wins against top heavyweights, like Lee Q. Murray.
  • Jack Chase: Jack Chase is a near IBHOF fighter himself, with wins over Big Boy Hogue, Eddie Booker, Aaron Wade, "Oakland" Billy Smith and Archie Moore. He and Marshall went 1-1-1.
  • Tommy Farr: Once ranked the #1 contender. At heavyweight.

I think about four of his fights exist, the Farr fight, the second Charles fight and a couple more. Footage of the first fight with Charles probably existed at one point, but it's probably lost to time. There's no footage of him in his prime, and there's no footage at all of the equally great Eddie Booker.

Memphis Pal Moore's career highlights
Beat Hall of Famers
Joe Lynch 4 times
Pete Herman twice
Kid Williams once
Jimmy Wilde once
Eugene Criqui once
Sammy Mandell once
Bud Taylor once

Also beat
Johnny Ertle twice. (Held share of World Bantamweight title)
Jack "Kid" Wolfe twice.( JFW World Champion, beat Joe Lynch twice, Kid Williams, Pete Herman once each)
Johnny Buff twice. (World Bantamweight titlist, American Flyweight champion)
Carl Tremaine twice.(wins over Bud Taylor and Eddie "Cannonball" Martin)
Frankie Mason once.(122 wins)
Young Montreal once.(beat Pete Herman twice, Joe Lynch, Bud Taylor once, American Flyweight Champion, fought for World Bantamweight title)
Kid Pancho once.(100 wins)
Eddie Anderson once.(127 wins)
Johnny McCoy once. World Flyweight titlist

In addition Moore had
4 Draws with Joe Lynch
2 Draws with Bud Taylor
1 Draw with Sammy Mandell
1 Draw with Frankie Burns
1 Draw with Johnny McCoy
1 Draw with Jimmy McLarnin
and a controversial 20 rd loss to Jimmy Wilde.

Memphis Pal Moore did have 52 losses in his 17 year career, but he was stopped only once in 251 bouts, due to a broken arm, and many of his losses were very likely a result of his taking fights on very short notice.

Thanks Seamus for that info. I was not familiar with his impressive career and I agree he should definitely be in the IBHOF.

What do you guys think of Cocoa Kid? Should he be in or not?

I've been calling for the Cocoa Kid to get in the Hall for years. His problem is that he has more than 50 losses. Even when you have 250 fights, 50 losses is kind of a deal breaker unless you beat a prime Henry Armstrong or something. He was the one guy who really got one over on Holman Williams, though.

Sung-Kil Moon would get my vote. Had only 22 fights but 15 of them were championship fights; winning 13 of them. Never beat a truly great fighter but his resume is full of solid contenders and championship level fighters. Was very exciting; not sure why he retired so soon.

I've seen many of his fights on video; unfortunately none of them were in English. If anyone has any more information about him please share. Doesn't seem to be much info about him on the internet.

I don't think Nigel Benn or Jeff Clark should make it either.
Eddie Booker and Lloyd Marshall deserve it.
You could make a pretty good case for Eddie Mustapha Muhammad, Rodrigo Valdez, and Lupe Pintor.

Rocky Kansas might be my first choice. Newsboy Brown has got a very impressive resume as well.

Both beat 5 HOF'ers by the way.

He had one great win. Other than that, he was a waste of talent. And a murderer. He's everything we don't want boxers to become. Sure, the IBHOF has a few thugs, but does it need many more?

Do you think Michael Nunn belongs if it wasn't for the drug conviction?
