Admittedly I have yet to see the full fight - you've convinced me Autobarn, if Murray was as impressive as you say let him solidify his position as british champ to build a clash with Khan. BUT you have to agree that if we wait too long the fight may never happen or will only happen when one or both of them have lost - reducing the appeal of the fight. So many potentially great all british clashes never happened because people waited to long to "build" the fight.

Very good performance, and maybe he can move on a bit now.

Biggest thing of note for me was his accuracy - We can argue that Meager was to stationary, but Meager was a live fighter coming into this one.

We saw how Khan made a meal of putting away a shop worn Gomez, who let's be honest was an even bigger punch bag than Meager.

Very impressive display from Murray. Meager is a solid British title contender and no one has treated him like that before and forced the referee to step in after less than 5 rounds of action.

Cracking fight, pretty much lived up to expectations, although Murray probably exceeded what i expected from.

Let him enjoy his reign as champion and take on all comers until he has the Lonsdale belt for keeps and then start talking EBU. Murray-Khan for both titles is a natural.

John Murray (25-0, 13 KO's) leapt onto the world boxing stage Friday night in Wigan, England, with emphasis, pummeling a very game, but entirely outgunned Lee Meager (21-3-2, 8 KO's) to capture the vacant British Lightweight title.

Murray put his hard hitting stamp on the bout in the opening stanza, establishing a very tight defense, and finding a repeated home for his stinging right hands.

The violent, one-sided script continued in the second, with Meagher unable to stem Murray's onslaught which was punctuated with a big left hook and more cracking rights.

The longer the fight went, the more apparent it became that Meager came to a gunfight unarmed, gamely absorbing Murray's bruising payload, but unable to answer back with anything significant.

By the fifth round, Murray added the signature to the bottom of his malevolent masterpiece with a scorching sortie of left hooks that prompted referee Howard Foster to save the resolute Meager from any more punishment.

Official time of the stoppage was 2:20 seconds of the fifth round.

"He's a hell of a fighter. A very tough kid," the victorious Murray said of Meager after the fight.

"He took a hell of a lot of shots. I'm surprised he didn't go down."

"I trained to be at my best, and I was. And you saw how good I can be," a triumphant Murray said after the fight

Not convinced of his power? Did he see Meager's face and how many times it was rolled around? Thaxton did nowhere near as better than Murray and many people on here thought he could bang - the only reason Meager didn't go down because he's tough as they come.

Just talked to Murray and his trainer Joe. They are set on a Khan fight. Joe basically told me why fight someone like Fewkes, who poses a similar set of problems, when they could just go straight into the most meaningful, better paying fight. Great attitude. It's a Haye like attitude, gunning for the big fights, willing to go on a hostile show.

I wonder if they will get the fight, with boxing being how it is. And with Khan having upheavel & uncertaintly (?) in his camp, changing trainers, etc.

John feels all his fights should be main events from now on, no more undercard stuff. He wants the big fights, because the ones that matter bring the best out of him.

Yeah, those final left hooks that swiveled Meager's granite head round, they had very little weight behind them!

I have to say the one weakness I saw was his lack of mobility. He is a very flat footed fighter, and this is going to make life difficult as he moves up in class aginst slicker operators.

Lots of very nice things though, nice tight guard, quick and fluid punching, and natural effortless punchpower, and also puts those shots together well and with quite amazing accuracy.

Remind me of Cotto at times.

Yes, I can see the comparison - but I don't think he has near Cotto's power.

If he had more power I would be very confident of his progression, but I think slicksters beats him and big punching (good chinned) fighters beat him.

Thaxton did have Meager within a punch of two of going down on several occassion - a fight that could have easily been compasionately stopped.

But is Thaxton's power all that anyway? - Light Punching Meager did Stewart alot quicker.... Khan did Lawton alot quicker.

Indeed his last pre half way KO was against the chinny Temple. His KO% is around the 50.

Murray's KO percentage is around the 50% - and up untill Friday, the last time he got the job early was against a very faded Odamattey and chinny Hickman.

Can't believe it was against me personally, I think it was just a topic they didn't want discussed, they did end up inviting me back after other posters felt it was unfair but I started posting on here and prefered it, and wanted to make a point(abeit a small one)

A bit late, I know, but anyway-

An exciting fight to watch, but surprisingly one-sided, especially for British title bouts. They tend to be toe-toe competative bouts- which is ironically exactly what this looked like being on paper.

No disrespect to Meager, he showed a lot of heart, but Murray really was fired up for this.
